Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter insists he is not looking over his shoulder, despite the prospect of losing top spot if Orlando Pirates beat SuperSport United this evening.
Chiefs have been top of the League standings since the first day of the season but could surrender that top spot tonight if Pirates – who have not lost in 10 League matches – take advantage tonight and pick up maximum points, after Amakhosi and Mamelodi Sundowns played out a goalless draw last night.
“It is honestly immaterial that we have been leading in the League for such a long time because I know it was never going to mean we would win the League,” Baxter says.
“I know being second in the League for one round, two rounds, five rounds or 10 rounds doesn’t matter as long as at the end of the season when they are giving out the medals we are top of the League.”
Baxter says he only needs to make sure his team does not get uneasy even if they lose top spot tonight.
“We can do what we have to do only with the players that we have. We have to make sure that we are not nervous because ‘oh, now we second’ or ‘oh, now we are third’. We have to make sure we perform in every game and that is the main thing.
“Everything else is immaterial because it doesn’t matter. What matters is that when we cross the finish line we are first, that is what this whole season is all about – finishing first.
“Manchester City against Manchester United last season … City crept over the finish into first position on the last day and it didn’t matter that United had the history. Who is first or second now doesn’t matter and I am sure Pirates and Platinum Stars are thinking the same way. This is not rocket science.
“I am not looking over my shoulder yet but looking at my team and trying to prepare this team. I have to try to keep my eyes away from looking at other teams thinking about what they have and how many points they have and whatnot. If I am to do that I will drive myself crazy. I have got to try and get both eyes on trying to help my players achieve the maximum they can,” the coach adds.
