A woman resigned over ‘invasive’ treatment from employer after buying new car

By BAKANG MOKOTO

3 July 2025 – The Select Committee on Economic Development and Trade has expressed its deep concern regarding the reported treatment of a cashier employed at a filling station in Maitland, Cape Town, following their purchase of a second-hand vehicle. The committee said the employee was reportedly subjected to invasive and demeaning conduct by the employer after acquiring a pre-owned car.

The Chairperson of the Committee, Sonja Boshoff said according to media reports, the employer questioned how the cashier could afford the vehicle on their salary and demanded access to their personal bank statements. Boshoff said this unacceptable behaviour ultimately led to the cashier’s resignation.

“While we cannot pre-empt the findings of any formal investigation, the reported conduct of the employer is deeply troubling and raises serious questions. To interrogate a worker’s financial independence, especially in this humiliating manner, is not only patronising, it borders on racial discrimination, abuse and a toxic workplace culture. This is not the South Africa we are building.

“Job creation must be rooted in empowerment and dignity, saying. Employers must recognise that they hold a responsibility not only to provide jobs, but to foster an environment where employees are treated with fairness, respect and basic human decency,” she said.

Boshoff further said when a worker is forced to resign for exercising financial autonomy, something is gravely wrong. She added that as the committee, they condemn this reported conduct in the strongest possible terms and calls on the Department of Employment and Labour to immediately dispatch labour inspectors to the filling station in question to assess the working conditions and broader organisational culture.

“The reported actions of the employer fly in the face of our constitutional values and the vision of inclusive economic development. Demanding bank statements from an employee is not only a gross violation of privacy, it is despicable and must not go unchallenged.

“The matter should not be left unresolved for too long. This incident must be thoroughly investigated and mediated with the aim of achieving an outcome that restores dignity and justice. Not just for the worker, but for any other workers who may be experiencing similar conditions in silence,” said Boshoff.

The vehicle, reportedly stolen during a house robbery in Table View, Cape Town, was traced with the assistance of surveillance technology provided by SA Polygraph and Investigation Services (SAPAS).

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Sergio Kock said the vehicle was identified travelling near the Three Sisters area. Kock said the Highway Patrol members executed a tactical stop on both the Mercedes-Benz and an accompanying Audi.

“During the stop and search, three suspects were arrested and law enforcement officers recovered several items, including laptops, cell phones and other valuables.

“Both vehicles were seized and the suspects aged between 24 and 36, were charged with possession of suspected stolen vehicles and property. They are expected to appear in court soon,” he said.

Portfolio shocked as principal shot dead

By KEDIBONE MOLAETSI

26 January 2025– The Chairperson of the Select Committee on Education, Sciences and Creative Industries, Makhi Feni, has condemned in the strongest possible terms the callous killing of Ekuthuleni Primary School principal, Jeffrey Sigudla in Wallacedene in Kraaifontein, Cape Town, Western Cape. Feni said what is alleged to have occurred has been a traumatic experience for all those who witnessed it, particularly for the young learners.

He further said the law enforcement should spare no effort in finding the culprits of this heinous act and the reasons they committed it. Feni added that the school principals are vulnerable to these kinds of hits and this is becoming normal.

“The media reports indicated that on Wednesday, the primary school principal was shot and killed in front of members of the school community. The assailants remain at large.

“We call on communities to jealously protect their schools and to come forward with information that could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators. This raises concerns about security issues around schools,” he said.

Feni said they ought to strengthen security, but that should not replace community vigilance on these challenges, as well as school vandalism. He said as much as they do not know why this happened, people ought to remember that principals are appointed by the department and the School Governing Bodies (SGBs) on account of their competence in school management.

“The committee sends its deepest condolences to the bereaved Sigudla family, their friends and the school community. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” said Feni.
