A policeman arrested for fraud

21 February 2025-A policeman arrested for fraud and defeating the ends of justice. The accused, Sergeant Tebogo Galetlhobogwe (45) briefly appeared at the Delareyville Magistrate’s Court on 18 February 2025.

The North West police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said, Galetlhobogwe, who is attached to the Detectives, was arrested after he allegedly attempted to release a detainee arrested for possession of drugs. Mokgwabone said this comes after Galetlhobogwe attempted to have the prosecutor sign the R500 admission of guilt fine documents.

“However, the vigilant prosecutor checked the charge sheet and established that the said case was postponed until 25 November 2024, for a bail application.

“The accused allegedly then took the documents to the clerk of court and paid R100 admission of guilt fine, but the prosecutor registered a case before the suspect could be released,” he said.

Mokgwabone further said the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit investigated the case, which was later referred to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) and came back with a decision to arrest. He added that, the investigations into the matter, including in terms of the SAPS Disciplinary Regulations are underway.

“Galetlhobogwe was released on R2000 bail and his case was postponed until 4 April 2025,” said Mokgwabone.

Meanwhile, the acting North West Police Commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng, expressed his disapproval for the police’s conduct, which he said is unprofessional, dishonest and tarnishes the image of the SAPS will not go unpunished. Asaneng also thanked the police and prosecution for collaborative efforts in the fight against corruption.

Three nabbed for dealing in dagga

14 December 2024 – Three suspects were arrested for dealing in dagga on separate occasions in Potchefstroom and Bloemhof respectively. The suspects were arrested following a tip-off regarding unknown suspects alleged to be transporting a large quantity of dagga between Gauteng and North West Provinces. 

The North West police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said, consequently, intelligence-driven operation was conducted on 9 December 2024, by the police and other role players, including a private security company. Mokgabone said during the operation, a Toyota Hilux with two occupants was stopped in Potchefstroom and found loaded with 440 kilograms of dagga.

“The two occupants, a woman and a man, were arrested. The second Toyota Hilux was stopped on the N12 road in Bloemhof and a man was arrested after the vehicle was found loaded with 259 kilograms of dagga. 

“It was established that both vehicles were in transit to Kimberley in the Northern Cape Province. The police are still looking for the fourth suspect who attempted to bribe a police officer by depositing R20 000 into the member’s account,” he said.

Mokgwabone further said the police have confiscated both vehicles as instrumentality used in the commission of the crimes. He added that Monica Mnyakeni (60) and Gerald Mnyakeni (25), briefly appeared in the Potchefstroom Magistrate’s Court on 12 December 2024.

“They were remanded in custody until 18 December 2024. In Bloemhof, Khumbo Mahlalela (24), appeared in court on 11 December 2024. He was remanded in custody until 23 December 2024, for bail application. 

“Investigations into the cases are underway. This is a success in an effort to fight against illicit drug trafficking,” said Mokgwabone.

Meanwhile, the North west Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, commended all the members, who ensured the arrests of alleged drug traffickers.

A man accused of killing two people, injured two in Schweizer Reneke applies for bail

A double murder case against Onkemetse Thaganyane (40), set to resume today at Schweizer Reneke Magistrate’s Court. Thaganyane, who is facing two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder, is applying for bail after he was arrested on 19 March 2024.

The North West police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said, Thaganyane allegedly shot and killed two people and injured two. Mokgwabone said, a confrontation ensued during a protest action at Extension 5, Ipelegeng Township in Schweizer Reneke.

“It is alleged that some members of the community demanded to be employed on a sewer pipeline project. During the confrontation, a shot was allegedly fired towards two construction vehicles, which were also pelted with stones, thus causing damage. 

“One of the construction vehicle drivers reportedly fired shots and in the process, a boy (11) and a man (33) were shot at. The minor died on the scene, while the man succumbed to injuries at Schweizer Reneke Hospital,” he said.

Mokgwabone further said in addition, two other men were taken to hospital due to serious injuries they sustained. He added that the police arrested the suspect and seized his firearm. 

Meanwhile, the North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, is shocked about the loss of lives and at the same time conveyed condolences to the deceased’s families. Kwena warned the public about the danger of violent protests, where even children and the innocent are often used.
