THE North West premier, Supra Mahumapelo in conjunction with The High Commissioner of the Republic of South Africa Mr Mdu Lembede will conduct a memorial lecture in honour of the late stalwart ZK Mathews at Moeding College in Otse, in Botswana on Friday.

Mahumapelo will also be part of the30th anniversary for commemoration of the 1985 Gaborone Massacre that will take place on Saturday. Those who are expected to attend the event, include government ministers from Botswana and South Africa.

Provincial acting spokesperson, Brian Setswambung said the move to honour Professor ZK Mathews and commemorate the Gaborone Massacre emanates from Mahumapelo’s State of the Province Address (SOPA) in March this year, which he directed that various activities and programmes will be initiated to honour cadres who passed away while on their way to and from exile.

“Subsequently, the Liberation Heritage Route Project was launched at Lobatla village in April this year with a view to document the history of the struggle launched through the province, and honour heroes and heroines who used this route to cross into Botswana on their way to other parts of the world as they resisted apartheid,” Setswambung said.

He further said the 1985 Gaborone Massacre took place on June 14 in 1985 when members of the then South African Defence Force (SANDF) crossed into Botswana and attacked South Africans and Batswana in Gaborone and neighbouring villages and twelve people died during the raid.

The Bokone Bophirima Provincial Government said the cultural carnival will be spread across various municipalities in quest to encourage the people of the province to buy traditional and indigenous food and belongings. The acting provincial spokesperson, Brian Setswambung said the premier encouraged the Tlokwe community to gather sophisticated knowledge by participating in the event.

The event was hosted at Ikageng location in Potchefstroom on Saturday. Many people including local artists, came out in numbers to take part. The cultural carnival was also part of the ongoing Setsokotsane programme that seeks to integrate and accelerate service delivery to citizens of the province.

“The premier said the cultural diversity among the communities is a key. Human societies across the province need to develop rich sets of experiences and explanations relating to the environments they live in. Mahumapelo said the event will spread across the province. He further added that the knowledge encompasses the sophisticated arrays of information, understandings and interpretations that guide human societies across in their innumerable interactions and to cope with fluctuating environments,” Setswambung said.

He said indigenous people have broad knowledge of how to live sustainably, however, Setswambung said the formal education systems have disrupted the practical everyday life aspects of indigenous knowledge and ways of learning, and replaced them with abstract knowledge and academic ways of learning.

“Today, there is a grave risk that much indigenous knowledge is being lost and, along with it, valuable knowledge about ways of living sustainably,” he said.

Setswambung reiterate that this cultural carnival was loaded with a variety of enticing activities. According to him, the Tlokwe City Council was the first to implement this cultural carnival which is to be rolled out in all municipalities across the province.

He said: “This is being done as part of the strategy to heighten the arts and the cultural milieu in the province. Various stakeholders from three spheres of government and community organisations displayed their products at exhibition stalls throughout the day for those who wanted to buy. Artists and crafters also participated in the Cultural carnival.”
