Mashaba announces squad to face Costa Rica and Honduras

Bafana Bafana coach Ephraim Mashaba has announced the squad to travel to Central America for two friendly international matches next month against Costa Rica on Thursday, 8 October 2015 at Boltodano Bricenio Stadium in Liberia and Honduras at Metropolitano Stadium on Tuesday, 13 October.

The Costa Rica match will kick off at 04h00 SA time on Friday, 9 October while the one in Honduras will kick off at midnight in South Africa.

Central America is eight hours behind South Africa.

“This is the first time I will be leading this squad out of Africa and it is an exciting prospect. The main idea is to try and gauge our level of performance.  Also I think it’s a good experience for us to play teams ranked above us like Costa Rica because to continue improving our rankings, we must play and beat the best,” said Mashaba.

This will be Bafana Bafana’s first ever meeting with Honduras while they have played Costa Rica once – in the Nelson Mandela Challenge clash on the 11th of October in 2003 at Olen Park Stadium in Potchefstroom. South Africa won 2-1, courtesy of second half goals from Siyabonga Nomvete and Patrick Mayo.

That was also the last game Mashaba was in charge of the national team in his earlier stint.

“If you look back then at the Costa Rica team, you will see they had a very strong team and it was not a fluke that we beat them. It is good that we are playing them again and see how both teams have progressed so far. I know for a fact they are much better and stronger; they are no longer the same team that we beat then; so it will be tough. But I have confidence we will do well because our boys can also put up a very good fight,” said Mashaba.

“We will do our best to go there and get victories. We want to take the Senegal outcome forward and try to win all the games going forward. But we have to be realistic and acknowledge that along the line we will encounter turbulence – win some and lose some, but our intention is to win all our games.”

Bafana Bafana assemble for camp on Sunday, 4 October in Johannesburg and depart for Central America the next day (Monday, 5 October).

They return to South Africa on Thursday, 15 October – two days later they face Angola in the first of four matches of the 2016 CHAN as well as 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The squad to play the CHAN qualifiers will be announced in the next few days.

“I would like to appeal to the nation to rally behind the team. We know that sometimes it hurts to lose but we are rectifying that and bring positive results,” concluded the Bafana Bafana mentor.

Shakes: Should he stay or should he go now?

d7286bc88bc3456bad894de84a065ee0

Cape Town – The jury is out on whether Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba should get the axe – or continue at the helm of the national team.

Bafana hit rock-bottom in their AFCON 2017 qualifier against minnows Mauritania on Saturday, going down 3-1 to the 114th-ranked team in the world in what will go down in the annals as the worst performance by Bafana in living memory.

Was it a mere blip in the road to long-term glory, or is it time for fresh blood in charge?

‘Bafana player, Serero ready to play’

BY KEDIBONE MOLAETSI

Bafana Bafana midfielder Thulani Serero has been declared fit to train and travel with the team.

South Africa faces Mauritania on Saturday, 5 September in Nouakchott, Mauritania in a CAF Orange Africa Cup of Nations Gabon 2017 qualifier.

Serero was called up for national team duty and his club had said he was recovering from an injury – the Bafana Bafana medical team assessed him this morning and found him ready to be part of the squad.

He trained with his compatriots, completed the session and showed no signs of pain.

The session was moved to Sturrock grounds at Wits after the UJ grounds were found to be waterlogged.

“Serero is fine, pain free and was able to complete the training session so we are happy with the results. He is ready to travel with the team. He had an ankle injury which he was recovering from hence the team sent us the scan and the report that had an injury, but he is good to go after we checked him,” said Bafana Bafana medico Dr Thulani Hlatshwayo.

Serero arrived in camp on Tuesday night alongside Germany-based Daylon Claasen, bringing the number of players in camp to 24. Only Kaizer Chiefs left back Tsepo Masilela hasn’t reported for national team duty after his club informed Bafana Bafana that he was injured.

“We had requested that he also come in for medical assessment, just like Serero, but the status quo with Masilela remains the same from yesterday – he has not yet arrived in camp and the issue has been reported to the Association so they can deal with it administratively because it is now out of our hands. And that’s where we are at the moment,” added Dr Ngwenya.

Mzikayise Mashaba did not finish the session after he was injured at training on his ankle, but he should be fit for the match.

Eric Mathoho, who sat out training on Tuesday as a precaution after he complained of pains on his foot, was back at training and showed no signs of discomfort.

Meanwhile Bafana Bafana have called off the Wednesday afternoon training session to give the players a bit of rest ahead of the trip to Mauritania.

The squad leaves on Thursday, 3 September on a 13h00 flight.

They will have their last training session on Friday at the match venue in Nouakchott, Mauritania.

Bafana Bafana are expected back in the country on Sunday, 6 September at 06h00.

They will then start preparations for the 2015 Nelson Mandela Challenge clash against Senegal which takes place on Tuesday, 8 September at Orlando Stadium. Kick-off is at 19h00.

Bafana Bafana beat Angola 2-1 in their international friendly at a wet and cold Cape Town Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Shakes Mashaba had made four changes to the side that drew 0-0 with Gambia in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the weekend, with Patrick Phungwayo, Clayton Daniels, Bongani Zungu and Jabulani Shongwe coming into the side.

It seemed to pay off as the hosts dominated the early exchanges – without creating too many opportunities – but it was the visitors who would take the lead.

It came on 19 minutes courtesy of a stunning 25-yard strike from Mfutila, which leaft Itumeleng Khune with no chance as it bounced in off the underside of the bar. This after Bongani Zungu lost possession in midfield.

Thamsanqa Gabuza then missed two gilt-edged chances – first from a header and then mis-controlling with just the goalkeeper to beat after some fantastic skill by Thulani Serero.

Bafana Bafana defeats Vodacom League side in practice match!!!

BY Obakeng Maje

Bafana Bafana defeated Vodacom League side Impala Warriors by seven goals to nil (7-0) in a practice match played at the Royal Marang Sports Complex on Saturday, 26 May 2012.

Impala Warriors is coached by former Orlando Pirates player Brandon Silent.

Siyabonga Nomvethe scored three goals with the others coming from captain Steven Pienaar, Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Lehlohonolo Majoro and Andile Jali.

Bafana Bafana have been in camp for a week now preparing for two 2014 World Cup qualifiers and an international friendly match.

They will face Ethiopia in their first match at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace in Phokeng near Rustenburg. That match will be played on Sunday, 3 June 2012 with a 15h00 kickoff time.

‘Yes we have been working very hard, especially myself who was out of the game for such a long time due to injury. I have been pushing myself as much as possible and I am getting back to my best,” said midfielder Letsholonyane.

“The upcoming matches will obviously put us under pressure because we always want to win and make the nation proud. Also having not qualified for the last edition of the AFCON has created some kind of pressure, but we are confident enough to ride past that and do well, starting with Ethiopia.”

Defender Siboniso Gaxa concurs.

“Yes there has been a lot of pressure for us to win for a while. We started well with the 2012 AFCON qualifiers but in the end things did not go well. But this is football and we have moved on from that and are determined to start the 2014 World Cup qualifiers well and end well. We are fortunate in that the defence has been very solid, so now we need to build from there to ensure we get goals and win,” said Gaxa.

The players have been given a day off on Sunday, 27 May and will return to camp only in the evening.

Harden up, Moeneeb!

When I heard about Moeneeb Josephs’ teary-eyed sessions with Benni McCarthy this week, my thoughts turned to JP Duminy and the lengthy wait he endured before breaking into the national cricket side.

Apparently Josephs no longer wants to play for the national football team because he refuses to play second fiddle to Itumeleng Khune as he feels he’s worked hard enough and deserves to be South Africa’s “No1”. How lame.

Khune and Josephs to me are ’keepers of similar ilk. Both are athletic, both are erratic, but where Khune stands out – over every ’keeper in the country – is his accurate distribution.

But that’s beside the point. Obtaining a national cap should be hard – bloody hard in fact. Crying because you can’t get a spot for South Africa seems a bit soft to me.

Duminy made his one-day international debut in 2004, but didn’t become a regular in that one-day side for three years. Duminy is one of the most precocious batting talents in the world, nevermind just South Africa, but he bided his time – he had to – before exploding onto the world scene on that magical tour of Australia in 2008/09.

Everyone knew what a talent he was, including teammates who watched him in the nets. His ability pushed them to become better and that is the point Josephs is missing.

He and Khune are the two best goalkeepers in South Africa. Josephs’ presence would have pushed Khune to do better and that would have helped the national team.

With due respect to the back up Pitso Mosimane has called in now following Josephs’ decision, if something happens to Khune in the next few days leading up to those World Cup qualifiers, it is the South African team that will suffer, because the next best isn’t available anymore.

Josephs must realise that playing for the country is a privilege, no one deserves to be there. He would do well to pick up the phone to Duminy and ask him how, despite everyone saying he was “the next big thing”, he had to be patient and bide his time, how he used that to become a better player, to become stronger mentally and be ready when his time came.

There’s no point crying about your missed opportunities, unless you’re close to your ultimate goal or they’re tears of joy upon achieving the ultimate goal.

Crying because you don’t get a chance wins you no friends. Harden up Moeneeb, get back to the grindstone, make more sacrifices and save the tears for something other than Benni’s shoulder. – The Star
