More than 1000 suspects nabbed during Operation Shanela

18 March 2025 – More than 1227 suspects were arrested for various crimes during Operation Shanela. The suspects were amongst others, arrested for rape, murder, assault GBH, malicious damage to property, burglary at residential and business premises, possession of drugs, theft out of/from motor vehicle and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The North West police spokesperson, Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone said of the 1227 arrested suspects, 424 were wanted for contact crimes such as murder, attempted murder, rape, assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and common, as well as house and business robberies. Mokgwabone said they were held during detectives’ suspect raiding operations.  

“Furthermore, a total of 28 suspected undocumented persons were taken in for processing by Immigration Officials. The arrests were effected through execution of several actions, which included stop and searches, roadblocks, patrols, vehicle check points, visiting and inspecting of licensed liquor premises, Second-hand goods dealers, tracing of wanted suspects and many others. 

“In Ikageng Township, near Potchefstroom on 14 March 2025, a fine of R1000 was imposed on a man (33), after he was found transporting liquor without a delivery note. Moreover, a joint roadblock on the R509 (Potchefstroom/Carletonville) road, resulted in the issuing of fines worth R6200 to eight motorists for road traffic related offences,” he said.

Mokgwabone further said items such as 95 ammunition, three firearms, three vehicles and a variety of drugs, were confiscated during the operations. He added that Operation Shanela will continue to bring more perpetrators to book as part of ensuring that the communities are and feel safe.

Meanwhile, the acting North West Police Commissioner, Major General Patrick Asaneng, congratulated the police and other stakeholders for their continuous support in fighting crime in the province to ensure the safety and security of the inhabitants.

Over 800 suspects nabbed during Operation Shanela

More than 800 suspects were arrested for various offenses between 12 and 18 August 2024. The suspects were amongst others, arrested for rape, murder, assault GBH, malicious damage to property, burglary residential and business premises.

This also includes possession of drugs, theft out of/from motor vehicles and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The North West police spokesperson, Lieutenant Col Amanda Funani said, of the 828 arrested, 288 were wanted for contact crimes like murder, attempted murder, rape, assault with intent to do Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH), assault common, house robbery and business robbery, while 388 were held during Detectives suspect raiding operations.  

“Additionally, 102 suspected undocumented persons were taken in for processing. The arrests were effected through execution of several actions, which included stop and searches, road blocks, patrols, vehicle check points, visiting and inspecting of licensed liquor premises.

“They were also effected during a raid at Second-hand goods dealers, tracing of wanted suspects and many others. The operations also culminated in the confiscation of a variety of drugs, dangerous weapons, explosives, 4 cell phones, nine ammunition, a firearm, liquor and three vehicles,” she said.

Funani further said during the operations, three illegal liquor outlets or shebeens were shut down. She added that in the Inter-Provincial Roadblock held on the N12 road by Gauteng and North West on 16 August 2024, a total of six suspected undocumented persons were taken in for processing, while 438 persons and 191 vehicles were stopped and searched.

“In addition, more than 90 fines were issued to motorists. Different safety tips pamphlets were distributed,” said Funani.

Meanwhile, the North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, commended members, units and other law enforcement agencies for successful operation Shanela that resulted in the arrests of the suspects. Kwena thanked the law enforcement agencies for always putting the safety of North West people first and for dedicating time to Operation Shanela.

More than 820 suspects were arrested for various crimes during Operation Shanela. The suspects were amongst others, arrested for rape, murder, assault GBH, malicious damage to property, burglary residential and business premises, possession of drugs, theft out of/from motor vehicle and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“The arrests were effected through execution of several actions, which included stop and searches, road blocks, patrols, vehicle check points, visiting and inspecting of licensed liquor premises, second-hand goods dealers and tracing of wanted suspects, among others.   

“The operations also culminated in the confiscation of a variety of drugs, dangerous weapons, explosives, four ammunition, a firearm, liquor and six vehicles. During the operations, three illegal liquor outlets or shebeens were shut down,” said Funani.

Meanwhile, the North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, applauded the police, units and other law enforcement agencies for successful operation Shanela that resulted in the arrests of 820 suspects for various crimes in the province between 22 and 28 July 2024. Kwena thanked the law enforcement agencies for always putting first the safety of people and for dedicating their time to Operation Shanela.

More than 793 suspects nabbed during Operation Shanela

More than 793 suspects were arrested during Operation Shanela which was conducted around the province starting from 15 to 21 July 2024. The suspects were amongst others, arrested for rape, murder, assault GBH, malicious damage to property, burglary residential and business premises, theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle, theft out of / from motor vehicle and 54 for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. 

The North West police spokesperson, Col Adele Myburgh said of the 793 arrested suspects, 347 were wanted for contact crimes like murder, attempted murder, rape, assault with intent to do Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH), assault common, house robbery and business robbery. Myburgh said 29 undocumented persons were taken in for processing.

“The arrests were effected through execution of several actions, which included stop and searches, road blocks, vehicle check points, visiting and inspecting of 56 licensed liquor premises, 13 Second-hand goods dealers, tracing of wanted suspects and many others. 

“The operation also resulted in the confiscation of a variety of drugs, dangerous weapons, four handguns and ammunition, three vehicles, liquor, tobacco products, and 11kg of copper cables,” she said.

Meanwhile, the North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, congratulated the police for these successes and thanked the police for working tirelessly in keeping suspects behind bars.
