ANC North West want Tlokwe back

Johannesburg – The ANC in the North West will not rest until it reclaims leadership in Tlokwe (Potchefstroom), it said on Tuesday.

“The PEC [provincial executive committee] officials will meet with ANC councillors in Tlokwe to harmonise relations amongst these deployees (sic) of the organisation and ensure that they forge close working relations,” spokesman Kenny Morolong said in a statement.

“[We] resolved to continue to interact with the residents of Tlokwe with a view of assuring them that the ANC will not abdicate its inherent duty of reclaiming the leadership of this municipality.”

In November last year warring factions in the party passed a motion of no confidence in ANC mayor Maphetle Maphetle.

The Democratic Alliance’s Annette Combrink subsequently replaced him.

The ANC was reportedly hopeful that Combrink’s appointment as mayor was invalid, due to the fact that she accepted the nomination via sms.

The party was trying to get Maphetle reinstated. Morolong said the ANC in the province would continue to examine all legal processes relating to the matter.

North West ANC delegates had a physical fight on the last day of the party’s national policy conference, spokesman Jackson Mthembu says

A North West African National Congress member was addressing the plenary session on Friday when another delegate tried to stop him, Mthembu said.

“One of the delegates grabbed the [microphone] from that person and a scuffle ensued… a scuffle ensued between two or four people. It was a physical fight,” he said.
