26 November 2025- A man from Modderrivier in the Northern Cape, was sentenced to three years imprisonment for assaulting a boy (9), at his home on 7 March 2024. The accused, Martiens Modukaneng (58), was found guilty of assault with the intent to cause Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH) on 19 November 2025.
The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Litabe said on 7 March 2024, the accused arrived at the house of the victim’s mother and attempted to hit her with a beer bottle. Litabe said the mother managed to avoid the glass bottle.
“However, it hit the boy leaving him with injuries on the head, face and ear. The victim was taken to the hospital for a medical examination and a case of assault GBH was subsequently reported.
“The accused was arrested on 12 March 2024. He was found guilty and sentenced to three years imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Frances Baard District Commissioner, Major General Charlotte Makgari said as the country observes 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, they commend the Detective Constable Nomathamsanqa Molusi from the Kimberley Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit for securing the conviction and ensuring justice for the young victim.
