A man (22) was sentenced to five years imprisonment by the Upington Regional Court for statutory rape. On 28 July 2023, Winston Maans found the girl (13) at a tuck-shop and followed her.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Omphile Masegela said Maans followed her and invited her to accompany him, which she refused. Masegela said he forcefully grabbed her and took her to his place, where he raped her.

“The victim suffered infections after a period of time and upon doctor’s visits, it was discovered that she was pregnant. A case was reported to the police for investigation and Winston was arrested.

“He was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment for statutory rape, which was wholly suspended for 5 years on condition that he does not commit the same offence for the period of five years,” she said.

Meanwhile, the North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, applauded the Investigating Officer, Sergeant Elliot Geya for the sterling investigation and  reiterated that the police are adopting a no tolerance approach when it comes to crimes perpetrated against women and children.
