Committee on International Relations hosts UN Special Rapporteur on Palestinian territories

29 October 2025 – The Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation had an engagement yesterday with the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Francesca Albanese, on her perspectives on the war in Gaza. Explaining the reasons behind the committee’s invitation to Albanese, the committee said the South African Parliament is a creature of South Africa’s democratic Constitution, which embraces a diversity of views and allows people to express their viewpoints without fear or favour.

The Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee, Supra Mahuamapelo said South Africa has a long way to go in entrenching the values of non-racialism, non-sexism and justice, as espoused by former President Nelson Mandela, who was regarded as a terrorist by the Apartheid government but who became a world icon of democracy. Mahumapelo said the committee invited Albenese after she delivered an acclaimed Mandela Lecture.

“She commended South Africa’s progress in a number of areas and called on South Africans to continue with what Nelson Mandela started. She also commended South Africa for making Israel accountable for its genocidal actions by taking such a resolution to the International Court of Justice to ensure Israel faces justice. She urged South Africans to disallow anything that diminishes their support for the Palestinian cause and instead intensify their actions in encouraging the international community to join them.

“She encouraged the South African government to meet with European governments to amplify the sorry plight of Palestinians. We call on mass-based cultural movements to join forces with other progressive, activist global movements against the genocidal state of Israel to give impetus to the ceasefire and calls for peace and self-determination for Palestinians, to end Israel’s decades-long illegal occupation of Palestine,” he said.

Mahumapelo further said the brutal maiming of women and children in Palestine illustrates Israel’s unquenchable thirst for Palestinian blood. He also calls upon international sport bodies to isolate Israel, especially FIFA, given its global mass appeal.

“We need to engage FIFA to explain to it why it’s important for it to be part of this struggle rather than being a bystander. The committee resolved to ensure that the parliamentary resolution, which was taken during the 6th Parliament, is implemented by holding the department of International Relations and Cooperation and the Presidency accountable.

“The committee will also deliberate on the proposed Apartheid Bill on Israel to aid its adoption,” added Mahumapelo.

A man sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for rape

29 October 2025- A man (44) was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by the Prieska Regional Court for rape. This comes after the accused raped a woman (19).

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Timothy Sam said the incident took place on 12 December 2019, when the victim was accosted by the accused who was known to her as the boyfriend of her aunt. Sam said the accused offered to accompany the victim home and along the way, he pushed her into a ditch and sexually assaulted her.

“The victim was ultimately rescued by a passerby, however the accused fled the scene. He was later arrested and sentenced to 10 years imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm. The court further ordered that his name be recorded in the National Register for Sexual Offenders,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Pixley Ka Seme District Police Commissioner, Major General Nomana Mtukushe, commended the prosecution team, led by Advocate Deetlefs and the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Riaan Van Wyk, for their collaboration which ensured justice for the victim.

Mtukushe reiterated that SAPS is committed to fighting Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) through strong partnerships with communities.

“The public is encouraged to support SAPS efforts by participating in the “Rate Our Service” survey, and to report criminal activities through the MySAPS App or Crime Stop number 08600 10111. All information will be treated confidentially,” she said.

ANC welcomes approval of new HIV prevention injection by SAHPRA

29 October 2025- The African National Congress (ANC) said it welcomes the approval of Lenacapavir by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA), making South Africa the first country in Africa to register this ground-breaking twice-yearly HIV prevention injection.

The ANC said this milestone comes as its nation continues to carry one of the world’s largest HIV burdens with nearly 8 million South Africans living with HIV.

The ANC national spokesperson, Mahlengi Bhengu said while some African countries have higher prevalence rates, the scale of South Africa’s epidemic means that any major prevention breakthrough here has continental significance. Bhengu said Lenacapavir has shown near-complete protection against HIV infection in global trials.

“Supported by a R513 million Global Fund grant, rollout will begin in April 2026, prioritising vulnerable groups such as pregnant and breastfeeding women, men who have sex with men and sex workers. The ANC views this as a powerful addition to the government’s ongoing HIV response which combines treatment, testing, prevention, and education to end new infections by 2030.

“The expected arrival of affordable generic versions by 2027 will further expand access and sustainability. The ANC commends the efforts of the South African government led by President Cyril Ramaphosa and calls on the international community, pharmaceutical companies, and global health institutions to ensure the affordability and accessibility of Lenacapavir, not only for South Africa, but for all developing and lesser-privileged countries, particularly across Africa,” she said.

Bhengu further said no lifesaving medicine should remain out of reach because of cost.

Motsumi lambasts learners over misleading pictures

29 October 2025- The North West MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi said it is disheartened and shocked to learn that some learners, when they arrived at an incubation camp, posed on beds without mattresses to mislead the public as if the department had not provided the mattresses to the learners at a camp held at Itereleng Skills Training Centre in Vaal Reefs on 26 October 2025. Motsumi said her department learnt about this irresponsible act posed by learners from the social media platforms.

She further said the learners were shown sleeping on beds directly without mattresses. Motsumi added that her department in its efforts of improving the matric results organized an incubation camp at Vaal Reefs and Itereleng for three schools, Kanana Secondary School, Mathlaleng Secondary School and Mmonkeng Secondary Schools.

“The department has always hosted the incubation camps at the same venue since 2019. We condemn the posing of learners on beds without mattresses. On behalf of the entire department, I am extremely disappointed by the irresponsible act committed by some learners who attended the incubation camp at Vaal Reefs.

“This venue has more than enough mattresses to accommodate all learners from the three schools. I believe this act was aimed at causing a sensation to create fear and anxiety in the parents. As we speak now, all learners have slept very well without any inconvenience. I want to sincerely assure parents that their children are safe and well taken care of,” she said.

Motsumi said parents should not panic at all because the department is taking good care of their children. She highlighted that these camps assist learners to avoid distraction which they sometimes experience when they study at home.

“Learners are expected to be at the incubation camp until they finish writing all their subjects. Teachers and Subject Specialists of different subjects will be available to assist learners,” she said.

A man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend granted bail

29 October 2025- A man, Atlholang William Mosiane (36), who is accused of killing his former girlfriend, Elizabeth Dimpo Motlodi was granted bail by the North West High Court. Mosiane faces charges of murder and two counts of pointing a firearm.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson in North West, Sivenathi Gunya said Mosiane’s release follows a successful appeal after bail was previously denied by the Tlhabane Magistrate’s Court in August 2025. Gunya said on 25 March 2021, Mosiane allegedly went to Motlodi’s residence looking for her.

“Upon his arrival, he enquired from her father about her whereabouts and was informed that she had not yet returned from work. He then left the premises. After a short while, the deceased’s father reportedly heard gunshots coming from his daughter’s shack. When he went to investigate, he allegedly saw Mosiane exiting the shack holding a firearm.

“Inside, he discovered his daughter lying on the floor with gunshot wounds. Mosiane was arrested and initially sentenced to life imprisonment. However, his conviction and sentence were later set aside due to procedural technicalities. He was re-arrested in August 2025, for the same offence and denied bail by the lower court before successfully appealing to the North West High Court,” he said.

Gunya further said Mosiane was granted a R5000 bail with strict conditions. He added that the court ordered Mosiane to report to the Tlhabane Police Station every Monday between 6am and 8pm until the conclusion of the trial.

“He must refrain from any contact, communication, or visits to the complainants or their premises; avoid interfering with witnesses. He should notify the investigating officer of any change of address. Mosiane is expected to appear again at the Tlhabane Magistrate’s Court on 11 December 2025, for the allocation of a High Court trial date.

“The NPA remains committed to pursuing justice for victims of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable through due legal processes,” said Gunya.

28 October 2025- The Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) in Northern Cape, Major General Stephen Mabuela, hosted the Provincial Prestige Award Ceremony held on 24 October at Vaal Inn in Barkly West, near Kimberley. Mabuela said the event got underway with a singular objective of recognizing and showing the Provincial Head’s appreciation to his soldiers, who have gone beyond their call of duties during the financial year 2024/2025.

He further said the ceremony was blessed by the presence of Major General Makgatho, the Acting Divisional Commissioner of Crime Intelligence, who served as the functionary of the night, representatives from Northern Cape SAPS District Commissioners who could not attend due to prior engagements. Mabuela added that various categories were awarded during the action and fun filled night. Including the Provincial Head’s special award, this went to MISP.

“We would like to congratulate all nominees and award winners for their milestone achievement. Also, a word of profound appreciation to the sponsors who made it possible for us to host this event,” he said.

15 beneficiaries receive RDP houses

28 October 2025- The Northern Cape MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA), Bentley Vass handed over a total of 15 houses to some of the beneficiaries of the Calvinia 200 Housing Project in the Hantam Local Municipality in Namakwa District). Vass was accompanied by the executive mayor of the Namakwa District Municipality, councillor Mervin Cloete, mayor of the Hantam Municipality, councillor Koos Alexander and other councillors of the two municipalities.

He further said the Calvinia 200 Housing Project is part of the 1 Billion Rand Housing Project launched in January 2024 by the Republic of South Africa (RSA) president, Cyril Ramaphosa and Northern Cape Premier, Dr Zamani Saul, as part of efforts to address the housing backlog of the Northern Cape. Vass added that the houses are completed.

“They will be handed over to beneficiaries in batches from project to project. We are happy that this morning, we are able to hand over keys to 15 families in this municipality. We continue to call all the appointed contractors across the Province, to work with speed to ensure that beneficiaries receive their houses sooner rather than later.

“We are aware of slow progress in some of the projects in the different districts and we have moved swiftly to terminate some of the contractors, who are not performing optimally despite several interventions and assistance by the department,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, Saul said the Northern Cape Provincial Government is committed to eradicating the province’s housing backlog by building houses in all the Districts.

The former liberation movement said this distinguished recognition by Malaysia’s oldest and most prestigious university is a testament to Ramaphosa’s commitment to diplomacy, inclusive governance and regional cooperation.

The ANC national spokesperson, Mahlengi Bhengu said the degree in International Relations is an indication of Ramaphosa’s leadership in breeding dialogue, economic partnerships and sustainable development across Africa and with global partners. Police need your assistance in unravelling a murder case

28 October 2025 – The police in Potchefstroom request the community’s assistance in unravelling the murder case. This comes after the lifeless body of Alfred Kompe (51) that was found in New Market Street in Potchefstroom on Sunday evening, 12 March 2017.

The North West police spokesperson, Colonel Adéle Myburgh said Kompe had a stab wound on the right side of his chest and was declared dead on the scene by Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS). Myburgh said the police request anyone who may have information that can assist in the investigation to contact the Investigating Officer, Sergeant Kotedi Mokotedi on 082 568 5631 or your local police station.

“The South African Police Service (SAPS) Crime Stop can be called on ‪08600 10111. Anonymous tip-offs can also be communicated via the MySAPS App from your smartphone,” she said.
