Broos: “Friendly matches do not exist for us”

By BAKANG MOKOTO

11 November 2025- Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos said the team will be approaching Saturday’s international friendly match against Zambia with the same focus and mentality they usually have for FIFA World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup-bound South African senior men’s national team will host regional neighbours Zambia at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in the Eastern Cape on 15 November 2025 as part of Broos’ preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco at the end of the year. Kick-off in Gqeberha will be at 3pm.

“We are preparing for the friendly game against Zambia on Saturday. But for me, friendly games do not exist. Every game we have to be focused and concentrate fully, and we have to try and win that game. It will not be any different for this game. I want to win on Saturday.

“With AFCON now just weeks away, this match will give us an opportunity to have a closer look at other players as we continue to fine-tune his squad. So it wouldn’t be a good thing if we lost the game on Saturday,” he said.

Broos further said they will ask every player to focus and concentrate the same way they do during the qualifiers. He added that even if it’s not a qualifier, they will not accept players taking this game as a little holiday.

“I want to win on Saturday. On the other hand, it’s also the last opportunity to call some players I want to see a little bit closer,” said Broos.

Meanwhile, the Bafana Bafana will remain in Johannesburg until Friday morning and then travel to Gqeberha.

Residents urged to stay vigilant and prioritise safety as the province experiences a wet and stormy Tuesday

By AGISANANG SCUFF

11 November 2025- Residents in different parts of the North West are urged to exercise extreme caution as the province experiences heavy rainfall. The North West MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA), Oageng Molapisi said the province is under a Yellow Level 4 warning for thunderstorms.

Molapisi further said the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has flagged the possibility of heavy downpours, damaging winds, lightning and hail, which may lead to localized flooding and disruptions. He added that some areas in the province may experience isolated, but impactful storms, with potential damage to infrastructure.

“Motorists and residents are advised not to cross flooded roads, rivers and low-lying bridges. Residents living in low lying areas are urged to be extra vigilant for the possibility of flooding. The province is expected to receive above normal rainfall throughout the summer season.

“The Disaster Management teams are on high alert to respond to any eventuality,” said Molapisi.

Steyn thrilled to have Cammy back

10 November 2025- The Toyota Cheetahs coach, Frans Steyn, is thrilled to have the rock solid loosehead prop, Cameron Dawson, back in the mix as they have turned their attention to the EPCR Challenge Cup, which kicks off in December.

The 26-year-old Dawson rejoined the Cheetahs, after spending some time in Durban, where he represented the Sharks during the early rounds of the United Rugby Championship.

Dawson has undoubtedly been one of the Cheetahs’ most improved and consistent performers throughout the year, and his value to the team has only grown following the departure of Hencus van Wyk to the Stormers.

While Tielman Niewoudt started at loosehead prop against Black Lion and featured off the bench in a few Currie Cup games, he remains a raw talent and for now, Dawson is still the go-to man in that position.

Dawson’s stint with the Sharks proved to be incredibly valuable, both for his personal growth and for the Cheetahs, as he is now firmly on the radar of the bigger franchises.

Steyn told OFM Sport having Dawson back is a major boost, especially with the European campaign on the horizon, and added if the prop were to move permanently to a team like the Sharks, it would be well deserved.

“Oh definitely. I mean, the young guys can only learn from him because Cammy came through the system.

“He left for a short stint with the Pumas and then came back, and right now we can’t go without him. It’s great to have him back, and he did well at the Sharks.

“My only worry is they might come back and ask to take him again, but whatever comes next for Cammy, he deserves it. He works hard, he’s a great team man, and it’s just good to have him back.”

Steyn said he’s generally pleased with what he’s seen during the first two days of their pre-season, following a short break after their games against Black Lion in the Toyota Challenge.

Yeah, it’s just nice to have so many guys back on the field again,” said Steyn, noting that several injured players have returned.

“I think there’s only one or two still out. Having everyone back and working together – that’s where the hard work starts. There’s a great vibe, and that last win against Georgia meant a lot. The way the guys went about it gives us confidence heading into the first game.”

The Cheetahs will face the Lions at Ellis Park in a warm-up match towards the end of November before jetting off to Europe to take on the Exeter Chiefs and Stade Français in the opening rounds of the EPCR Challenge Cup.

World leaders must act now to tackle inequality

By REGINALD KANYANE

10 November 2025- The Republic of South Africa (RSA) president, Cyril Ramaphiosa said when South Africa took over the Presidency of the G20 nearly a year ago, they identified ‘equality’ as one of the pillars of their term, alongside ‘solidarity’ and ‘sustainability’. Ramaphosa said they chose to focus on equality because it is essential to a more stable, prosperous and sustainable world.

He further said if the G20 is going to live up to its mission to tackle pressing global economic and financial issues, then it needs to significantly and urgently reduce inequality. Ramaphosa added that Global wealth inequality is stark.

“The world’s richest 10% account for more than half of total global income. These people account for a staggering 74% of total global wealth. The human cost of these inequalities is severe; one in four people globally face moderate or severe food insecurity. These huge disparities are unjust and consign billions of people to poverty.

“Inequality is bad for everyone. It makes the world less stable, fuels conflict and undermines democracy. It stifles inclusive economic growth and prosperity. It is for this reason that I appointed an Extraordinary Committee of Independent Experts on Global Inequality as part of our G20 Presidency,” he said.

Ramaphosa said the committee, chaired by Nobel Laureate and renowned economist Joseph Stiglitz, handed over its findings last week. He said the report examines the causes and consequences of inequality and makes important recommendations.

“Given the importance of equality to sustaining global growth, to social and political stability and to the legitimacy of international economic governance, it is good that at South Africa’s instance this will be the first time the G20 will focus on this matter and consider an in-depth report of this nature.

“As Stiglitz and his fellow experts note, the features of the international economy that perpetuate inequality “can be significantly affected by the decisions and actions of G20 governments”. They say that inequality is a policy choice. It is therefore critical that G20 leaders recognise the extent and urgency of the problem of inequality – and that they act accordingly,” said Ramaphosa.

He said among the committee’s recommendations is the establishment of a permanent international body on inequality. Ramphosa said this would be modelled along the lines of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which has been vital to global efforts to measure and respond to the climate emergency.

“In a similar way, the proposed International Panel on Inequality would bring focus to bear on inequality and measure, monitor and report on global and national trends in inequality among and within countries.

“It would be mandated to advise governments, multilateral bodies and institutions and the G20 on effective policy responses. The report suggests policy levers that governments around the world can use to reduce inequality. It is noteworthy that South Africa already has a number of these policies in place,” he said.

Dagga worth R7.7m seized

By REGINALD KANYANE

10 November 2025- The police in the Namakwa District seized dagga worth approximately R7.7 million during routine patrols. This comes after the vigilant police noticed a suspicious vehicle with boxes loaded on the back during the early hours on 5 November 2025.

The Namakwa District police spokesperson, Captain Ivan Magerman said two suspects were arrested. Magerman said the alert police members intercepted the vehicle allegedly transporting dagga with an estimated street value of R7.7 million.

“According to information, members of C relief of Steinkopf SAPS were conducting routine patrols at the N7-R382 junction near Steinkopf when they observed the vehicle with boxes loaded at the back. Upon searching the vehicle, officers discovered dagga with a provisional weight of 64 800 kilograms.

“Two suspects aged 33 were subsequently arrested and the vehicle seized as it was utilized in the commission of crime. The suspects are expected to appear in court soon on charges of dealing in drugs. This major success reaffirms and demonstrates the SAPS continued commitment to combating drug trafficking and other related crimes in the Namakwa district,” he said.

Magerman further said the vigilance and professionalism displayed by the members involved prevented the distribution of illegal narcotics from reaching our communities.

Meanwhile, the Namakwa District Police Commissioner, Brigadier Schalk Andrews, commended the police for their swift action and appreciated their efforts in squeezing crime.

Police call stokvel members to be cautious during pay-outs

By OBAKENG MAJE

10 November 2025- The police in Northern Cape said they have experienced the increase in cash deposits and bulk purchases by stokvels and society clubs, especially during festive season. The police said they urge community members to adhere to safety hints in order to prevent economic crimes targeting these clubs.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Colonel Cherelle Ehlers said individuals should refrain from making cash deposits of club members’ contributions on high risk days such as month end. Ehlers said they should rather arrange the club’s pay-out to be electronically transferred into each member’s personal account or choice of account.

“Arrange for members to deposit cash directly into the club’s account, instead of collecting cash contributions. Do not carry large amounts of cash in person. Your safety is our priority, be vigilant and be safe.

“Criminal activities can be reported via the MySAPS App or 08600 10111,” she said.

By OBAKENG MAJE

10 November 2025- A trial on a murder and attempted murder case against The Meat Brother’s Pub owner, Tshwaro Mangwegape (41), is expected to commence today at the Taung Regional Court.
