Mkhonza announces 24-player squad

Banyana Banyana head coach, Joseph Mkhonza announced a squad of 24 players that will assemble in Johannesburg for a four-day fitness and assessment camp.

The Sasol-sponsored team last played a competitive match at the Cyprus Women’s Cup in March and this camp will give the coach and his technical team an opportunity to assess players’ developments and fitness.

The squad, which is made up of locally based players, will assemble from 30 May – 2 June and this will be the first time the coach has had an opportunity to have the squad together since the team returned from Cyprus.

This camp forms part of Mkhonza’s plan to track the players’ development ahead of the international competitions that the team will be participating in later in the year. It will also form part of preparations for the Women’s COSAFA Cup which is scheduled to take place in Namibia in December this year.

“It is essential that we monitor and evaluate the players regularly especially during the quiet period for the national team. This also gives us the opportunity to look at players that are doing well in the Sasol League so that we can build a strong squad for future tournaments. This is very important for the development of the team,” said Mkhonza.

Banyana Banyana are expected to depart for Nelspruit on Monday, 3 June 2013, once the coach has cut the squad down to 21 players. The team is set to play an international friendly against neighbours Mozambique at Kanyamazane Stadium on Sunday, 9 June 2013.

Mkhonza said that the team needed to consistently work at improving their performance and that having regular camps and matches was one way of achieving this objective.

“None of our girls that are playing in the overseas leagues are available for this camp. This will give me the opportunity to grow the squad for the future,” he said.

Sexual offences courts to open next month: Radebe

jeff-radebe
Fifty seven regional Sexual Offences Court will start operating next month. This was announced by Justice Minister Jeff Radebe in parliament today. The announcement comes as South Africa observes child protection week and amid rising cases of woman and child abuse.

With a R16.7 billion budget, Justice Minister Jeff Radebe can now prioritise the much vaunted Sexual Offences courts. “We have adopted a zero-tolerance stance towards rape, violation of the rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and other forms of violence targeted against our mothers and daughters,” says Minister Radebe.

Six new courts will be built in the next 3 years for previously unserviced areas.

Meanwhile, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) came in for some criticism. “You have police caught on camera murdering Andries Tatane. They are clearly identified, a crime is obviously committed in our eyes but then we are told that the prosecution could not make their case. The recent release of Arthur Brown, with a slap on the wrist is another case in point,” says United Christian Democratic Party (UCDP) MP, Isaac Mfundisi.

“For all the right reasons the National Prosecuting Authority should be held accountable for the fact that South Africans are taking the law into their own hands. The actions of the NPA in this Breytenbach matter is once again simply confirming that all is not well in this unit,” says Congress of the People (COPE) MP, Luzelle Adams.

In an earlier media briefing, Radebe defended the NPA saying these were isolated cases, compared to its overall conviction rate.

NUM given deadline to beef membership numbers in Lonmin

NUM
The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has until July 16 to regain its majority at Lonmin so it can keep its offices at mines in Rustenburg.

The Labour Court in Johannesburg ordered that the 90-day period, in terms of the union’s recognition agreement with the company, would run from April 16 to July 16.

Lonmin had intended to close NUM offices on May, 30. Earlier this month, the mine reportedly announced that NUM’s rival, Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu), represented 70% of the workforce at Lonmin. Amcu now wants recognition rights as a majority union.

Meanwhile, in the Northern Cape, Kumba Mine says it cannot commit that it will heed a NUM call for the reinstatement of 120 dismissed workers at its Sishen operations at Kathu. The iron ore giant acknowledged receiving a memorandum of demands from NUM on Wednesday.

Initiate deaths blamed on witchcraft

initiate2
The office of King Mabhoko III of the Ndebele tribe has blamed the deaths of 28 initiates in Mpumalanga’s highveld area on witchcraft.

Ndzundza Tribal Authority (NTA) spokesperson Prince Dumisani Mahlangu told a Sapa correspondent this week the number of deaths was unusually high. “These deaths are not normal, kune buloyi la (there is witchcraft here),” said Mahlangu, who was also critical of the House of Traditional Leaders (HTL).

King Mabhoko III has been blamed for three deaths in Limpopo and 28 in Mpumalanga, where initiation schools were allegedly being illegally run with his permission. Altogether six deaths have been reported in Limpopo. Three were at initiation schools approved by another Ndebele traditional leader, Kgoshi PJ Mahlangu.

Prince Mahlangu accused Mpumalanga HTL chairperson Kgoshi Mathupa Mokoena of speaking “nonsense” to the media. “I read the things written in the newspapers. Mokoena ukhuluma amanyala (Mokoena is speaking nonsense),” said Mahlangu. He said the NTA was investigating the deaths and had already established some of the causes.

“Some boys went to ingoma (initiation schools) without being screened for any sickness, which may place them in danger,” Mahlangu said. “We also found out that some of the permits used for some schools were copies of originals issued to other initiation schools,” he said.

Most of the fatalities occurred in Siyabuswa, KwaMhlanga, Verena, Kwaggafontein, Middelburg, Bethal, Belfast and Evander — all districts of Nkangala in Mpumalanga. After a meeting between the HTL and the Health Department on Friday, department MEC Candith Mashego-Dlamini told journalists that 134 permits were issued under King Mabhoko III, including for those schools where there were fatalities.

“A total of 134 traditional leaders were authorised by King Mabhoko III to conduct ingoma,” said Mashego-Dlamini. “However, we noted with concern that there are traditional leaders who are not accountable to King Mabhoko III, yet are currently conducting ingoma.”

Dlamini said King Mabhoko III had agreed to abide by compliance issues on conducting ritual circumcision. “Some of the compliance agreed upon is pre-screening of initiates for HIV, TB, BP, glucose and other health problems… ensuring that initiation schools are approved and certified by the king to conduct ingoma, and ensuring that there is consent from parents or guardians,” said Mashego-Dlamini.

Govt to curb prison gang violence

prisoncell
Almost R6 billion has been set aside by the Department of Correctional Services to crack down on gangsterism in prisons.

Minister of Correctional Service Sbu Ndebele says a National Gang Management Task Team has already been established to implement a gang busting strategy. He says his department has declared war on gangsterism inside prisons.

“We have set aside an amount of R5. 8-billion to fight gangsterism in prisons and that affects our officials, that target our officials and we want to win this war,” says Ndebele.

Earlier this year, 20 prisoners were wounded, two of them critically, at the Pollsmoor Prison in Cape Town. The fighting at Pollsmoor followed riots which were reported at the Groenpunt Correctional facility in the Free State, followed by an incident at St Albans in Port Elizabeth which resulted in the death of three prisoners and the injury of 65 others.

Mom’s choice: justice or son’s mental health

justice-logo
Pretoria – Letting her child’s alleged abuser walk and not face the music for what he did is one of the most difficult decisions a Pretoria mother has ever had to take.

For years, the 37-year-old woman tried unsuccessfully to get counselling for a son who had allegedly been abused by his father. She was told that therapy at that stage was not possible because it would interfere with the criminal case.
