Buying licences seems to be the norm

The problem of people buying their driving licences is so bad that seven out of 10 Durban driving schools, randomly selected by the Daily News, were willing to be involved with bribing officials.

Two of the schools were so blasé they quoted a price over the phone, with five being more cautious and requesting a face-to-face meeting before talking about money.

ANC: No ban on visiting Mandela

1927176075

Johannesburg – Former president Nelson Mandela’s family has denied barring government officials from visiting him in hospital, the ANC said on Monday.

“We have spoken to the family about this report and they deny that they issued such an instruction or spoke to the media on barring the ANC and government from visiting Madiba,” said spokesman Jackson Mthembu in a statement.

“What we know is that given the pressure associated with the admission of president Mandela, there are general restrictions that permit only relevant people to have access.”

The Star newspaper reported on Monday that the Mandela family had taken charge of the 94-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner’s hospital stay, banning everyone – including government leaders and senior party officials – from visiting him.

Mthembu said: “We will continue as the ANC to pray for his recovery and call on all South Africans and the world to keep him and his family in their prayers… we appreciate the good work that is [being] done by his medical team.”

Mandela has spent two nights in hospital.

Earlier, the Presidency said Mandela’s condition was “unchanged”.

“Former president Nelson Mandela remains in hospital, and his condition is unchanged. Madiba was admitted on Saturday, 8 June 2013, for treatment in a Pretoria hospital for a lung infection,” spokesman Mac Maharaj said.

Mandela has been in and out of hospital in the past few years. At the end of March and in April this year he spent nine days in hospital receiving treatment for recurring lung problems. – Sapa

ANCYL disbands four provinces

1035164370
The ANC Youth League’s national task team has disbanded the organisation in four provinces, convenor Mzwandile Masina said on Monday.

“The meeting of the task team decided to disband four provinces; they are Limpopo, Free State, North West, and Northern Cape,” Masina told reporters in Johannesburg.

“We have communicated with them and made sure our organisational structures are informed of this development.”

The NTT had visited eight provinces to assess their structures.

KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, and the Western Cape were “reconstituted”.

The NTT would work to strengthen them, said Masina.

The NTT’s assessment of Gauteng was not yet complete and it would only visit the Eastern Cape in the next seven days.

“We have come to a conclusion that some drastic measures need to be taken.

“We are more convinced that the ANCYL is in a weaker state since its disbanding (of its national executive committee),” said Masina. – Sapa

ANC: Stop speculating about Mandela

Nelson%20Mandela
Johannesburg – The ANC urged the media to stop speculating about Nelson Mandela’s health following the former’s president’s admittance to a Pretoria hospital at the weekend.

“We call on all media houses and journalists to treat Madiba’s health as a serious matter and stop making unwarranted speculations,” spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said in a statement.

“We request the media to give the Madiba the privacy and respect they deserve at this time.”

The presidency said in its first update in more than 48 hours on Monday morning that Mandela’s condition was “unchanged”.

“Former President Nelson Mandela remains in hospital, and his condition is unchanged. Madiba was admitted on Saturday, 8 June 2013, for treatment in a Pretoria hospital for a lung infection,” the presidency said.

“President Jacob Zuma reiterates his call for South Africa to pray for Madiba and the family during this time,” it said.

‘Meeting Mandela a dream come true’

The media continued camping outside his house in Houghton, Johannesburg, and a Pretoria hospital.

Mziwenkosi Tantsi, 29, a driver who works next door to the Mandela Houghton residence, showed journalists camped outside the house a photo of him and the ailing icon.

The photo was taken inside the house in 2010 when Tantsi got the opportunity, through Mandela’s grandson Ndaba, to meet him.

“It was like seeing heaven with my own eyes,” Tantsi said in IsiZulu.

“It was a dream come true to meet him. I touched his hand and didn’t wash it for two weeks. It just felt wrong.”

Tantsi said he was not ready for Mandela to go.

“I’m not ready [for him to go]. He must leave when things are fixed because things aren’t good right now,” he said.

Media camps

The number of media outside the hospital in Pretoria kept swelling on Monday.

Local and international journalists braved the biting cold and monitored two entrances to the hospital. Security guards also manned the entrances.

About 10 outside broadcasting vans were stationed next to the entrances.

Some journalists had erected small tents and some had generators.

Passers-by stopped to enquire about Mandela’s whereabouts from the journalists.

The Star newspaper reported that the Mandela family had taken charge of the 94-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner’s hospital stay, banning everyone – including government leaders and senior party officials – from visiting him.

In and out of hospital

Mandela has been in and out of hospital in the past few years. At the end of March and in April this year he spent nine days in hospital receiving treatment for recurring lung problems.

Earlier in March, he was admitted to a Pretoria hospital for a scheduled check-up and was discharged the following day.

In December last year, Mandela underwent an operation to remove gallstones and treat the recurring lung infection. He was discharged after an 18-day stay and placed under home-based high-care at his Houghton home.

In January, the presidency said Mandela had made a full recovery from the surgery and continued to improve. In February last year he was admitted to hospital for a stomach ailment.

Vladimir Vermezovic’s agent Ivica Stankovic has denied approaching Orlando Pirates to offer the coach’s services.

The former Kaizer Chiefs coach was sacked by Serbian giants Partizan Belgrade towards the end of April and he has apparently expressed interest in returning to South Africa.

Stankovic denies that Vermezovic has approached Pirates. “No, there have been no formal or informal talks with Pirates. The coach is not here, but he will be interested in coaching in South Africa again,” he tells KickOff.com.

Also linked with the Pirates hot seat is former Ajax Cape Town coach Foppe de Haan as Roger de Sa’s future looks increasingly unsettled at Parktown.

Bafana ready for ‘hell of a game’

0f1d4bb561493a6b54590875fed32e93
Bafana Bafana midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane says Sunday’s 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Ethiopia will be a ‘hell of a game’, but insists the team are ready to do the job.

Gordon Igesund’s team produced a polished performance as they beat Central African Republic 3-0 in a 2014 World Cup qualifier in Yaounde, Cameroon on Saturday.

However, ‘Yeye’ says the big test comes in Addis Ababa this weekend.

“We have to beat Ethiopia; there are no two ways about it. I had a feeling they were going to win in Botswana because they are a stronger side, but then that is good because it means we have to do the business ourselves and not depend on the next team to help us qualify.

“It is as simple as that. We have to beat Ethiopia and top the group before we play our last qualifier against Botswana at home.

“But this one is going to be more difficult because it is an away game in the true sense of the word and with all their supporters behind them; it is going to be one hell of a game.”

Letsholonyane adds: “We have to work extra hard to get the points as this is mostly likely to be the group decider.

“Whoever loses will have to play catch up and with only one match remaining it is going to be very hard if not impossible. If we lose this match, we have to depend on CAR to stop Ethiopia when we play Botswana, and that is not an ideal situation we want to find ourselves in.”

Bafana will leave Yaoundé on Thursday for the match in Addis Ababa.
