Judge: Boeremag could have caused bloodshed

2576831169
Pretoria – South Africa would have seen massive bloodshed and chaos if the Boeremag’s treasonous coup plot had been successful, Pretoria Judge Eben Jordaan said on Monday.

Exactly 10 years after the first witness took the stand in the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria in the country’s first post-apartheid treason trial, he began handing down sentence.

He is expected to sentence the 20 men, who were all found guilty of high treason, on Tuesday.
The Boeremag’s “bomb squad” – Herman van Rooyen, Rudi Gouws and brothers Johan, Kobus and Wilhelm Pretorius – were in addition found guilty of culpable homicide and conspiring to murder former president Nelson Mandela.

A Soweto mother, Claudia Mokone, was killed when a piece of steel dislodged by a homemade bomb detonated on a railway line landed in her shack.

Murdering Mandela

Plans to murder Mandela with a bomb while he was en route to open a school in Bolobedu were thwarted when he arrived by helicopter instead.

Jordaan said the political dispensation in South Africa had changed completely since 1994 and every citizen now had the right to vote, despite the colour of their skin.

The Constitution was the core document of the new order and the cornerstone of democracy, he said.

The Bill of Rights protected political rights, the right to vote and minority rights, but not where it was to the detriment of the rights of others.

He said every citizen had the right to form a political party and promote a political agenda and could change the political dispensation in the country by voting out its leaders.

This however had to happen within the framework of the Constitution, which presupposed a process of change through negotiation.

Jordaan said the accused had planned to overthrow the ANC government through methods that were unconstitutional and included violence and planned violence. Their plans seriously endangered peaceful co-existence and if they ever came to fruition would undoubtedly have led to a bloodbath.

‘Extreme views not worth it’

Not everyone was satisfied with what was happening in South Africa, but if everyone turned to violence there would be chaos, which could not be tolerated by any society, he said.

People who shared the extreme views of the accused should realise it was not worth it, he added.
The judge summed up the personal circumstances of each of the accused. They ranged from highly qualified academics and medical doctors, to farmers and career soldiers.

Many of the Boeremag members had been in prison awaiting trial for over a decade. Two of the accused had died since the trial started and one was in a nursing home after suffering a series of strokes.

Most sketched a grim picture of losing everything they had, children growing up without their fathers and many marriages ending because of the stress of the trial.

Several of the accused gave political reasons for their actions, but Jordaan said this was not a mitigating factor and was in fact aggravating.

Sentencing proceedings continue.

Suspected kidnapper held after Chana shooting – report

ca70a62a2c8b492db18b0aa65f21bed5
Johannesburg – The Hawks arrested a suspected kidnapper on Monday, after police shot hip hop artist Khuli Chana in a case of mistaken identity, eNCA reports.

Chana, whose real name is Khulane Morule, was shot at a garage along the N1 highway in Midrand.

ENCA reported that the suspect, 41, was arrested and faces charges of kidnapping and possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini told the TV news station that police were still searching for four other suspects.

Dlamini said police from Bedfordview had mistaken Chana’s luxury sedan to be that of a kidnapper, who was being tracked.

Police tried to stop the vehicle, but it drove away at high speed and several shots were fired, he said.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate said it had launched an investigation into the matter.

Chana has been discharged from hospital and is recovering at home.

Basetsana coach steps up plans for World Cup qualifiers

Soccer
Following a run-away first leg victory (5-2) over Botswana, the South African U20 (Basetsana’s) head coach Sheryl Botes is now plotting a possible downfall of Tanzania, the likely opponents of the next round.

Tanzania recorded a resounding 10-0 victory over Mozambique in their first leg encounter, making the second leg a possible formality.

It is the two respective victories that have compelled Botes to start thinking of the second leg and the possible opponents.

Commenting on the Botswana game, Botes said despite it being a physical game and picking up a number of injuries, the players stuck to the game plan and executed it perfectly.

“We didn’t know what to expect from Botswana in the first half but we came with guns blazing in the second half in which we literally finished them off,” she said.

The 2014 Edition of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup is scheduled for Canada from 5-24 August 2014 and will feature 16 countries of which two teams will come from Africa.

Botes said she had received immediately the result of the match between Tanzania and Mozambique with great surprise.

“While we are likely to face Tanzania in the second round, we have to take care of the second leg against Botswana first,” she said.

The return-leg match against Botswana will be played on Saturday, 9 November 2013 at a venue still to be confirmed.-TDN

Teacher in court over child porn ring

crime_scene
Bloemfontein – A former Free State teacher accused of being part of a child porn syndicate appeared briefly in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The man, who is out on R2 000 bail, will be back in court on 8 November.

In August, five other men, including another teacher and a retired school principal, appeared in various South African courts in connection with the same matter.

The six men were arrested in four provinces on 15 August after a tip-off from Interpol.

Child porn syndicate

The men were allegedly found in possession of child pornography. They were arrested in Lichtenburg, Potchefstroom, Bloemfontein, White River, Douglasdale, and Florida.

A lawyer, a dermatologist, and a businessman are among the six. All are suspected of involvement in an international child pornography syndicate, police said at the time.

Police were investigating whether the six were involved in the distribution and manufacturing of child pornography.

Investigators raided several homes in various provinces in August.

Among the items seized were 672 DVDs, 22 memory sticks, eight laptops, two computer tablets, 39 external hard drives, and 25 books containing explicit photos.

It was reported the case had links to Canada, the United Kingdom, the United States, western Europe and Australasia.

Small kids set alight tyres in Bekkersdal

6289d71a203a4dee9b82e2f5853cb6fd
Johannesburg – A group of children set tyres alight in Bekkersdal township, outside Westonaria, on Monday morning.

A Sapa photographer on the scene estimated the children were between 6 and 13-years-old.

“There were between 30 to 50 of them burning tyres close to the entrance of the township. Police came and put out the fire. They are monitoring the group,” he said.

Earlier, police broke up groups of children in school uniform and ordered them to go to school. The group that set fire to the tyres was not wearing uniform.

Violent protests in Bekkersdal over the last few days had affected schooling. The provincial education department announced last week it had organised a special residential camp outside the area for matric pupils who started writing their final exams on Monday.

Protests suspended

On Sunday, community leader Thabang Wesi said they did not want to disrupt the children’s exams.

“We are suspending the protests and allowing schooling to continue and for the situation to return to normal in Bekkersdal,” said Wesi.

On Monday, police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said police maintained a strong visible presence in Bekkersdal as well as in the neighbouring Simunye township as the protests had spilled over to that area.

Several police officers, some on horseback, patrolled the streets.

At the entrance to Bekkersdal the metro police and SA Police Service conducted a roadblock, searching vehicles entering and leaving the township. Burnt tyres and rocks were lying in the streets.

The protesters wanted the removal of the mayor and better service delivery. They vandalised government properties and damaged police cars and a disaster management vehicle.

Group to meet MEC

Several people had been arrested and charged with public violence.

Wesi said community leaders met members of the tripartite alliance on Sunday and agreed to allow investigations launched by Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Lechesa Tsenoli to proceed.

The group was expected to meet Gauteng human settlements and local government MEC Ntombi Mekgwe on 3 November.

When Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane visited the area on Sunday residents disrupted a church service she attended by throwing stones at the building. Mokonyane condemned their action and said she would not be intimated.
