Crime-Scene
Mahikeng- Eight drunken drivers were arrested and two vehicles impounded around Mahikeng over following a special operation by the Jaws intervention unit as part of the Mahikeng Revitalization programme, departmental spokesperson Daddy Sebolecwe said.

The traffic authorities have further arrested 11 Nigerian citizens without proper documentations for being in the country. They were arrested on the Albert Luthuli drive in the early hours of Sunday, driving in a taxi with an expired license disc.

“The Nigerian citizens were handed over to relevant department which will make proper arrangements for deportation to their country. “Premier Mahumapelo called for the revitalization of Mahikeng, and our contribution to this program is by ensuring that all motorists are law-abiding drivers and to clear crime on the streets of Mahikeng. We are going to work with pplice and all other relevant stakeholders to conduct joint special operations around Mahikeng and across the province by further engaging communities to fight crime and to bring offenders to book.”

“The city must be clean without crime and negligent road users,” said Molapisi.

MEC Molapisi further reiterated that the department will act harshly to those found on the wrong side of the law.

Pupils miss class due to quake damage

0d93386de1c5431fa8ff714df0dd2f91
Orkney – Vuyani-Mawethu Secondary School pupils in the township of Khuma near Orkney in the North West were milling around the schoolyard on Wednesday morning as teachers tried to find a way to deal with damaged classrooms.

At least four classrooms were damaged on Tuesday when an earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale hit the province. The computer lab suffered the most damage with ceiling boards and bricks having fallen to the ground.

Some pupils were inside when the earthquake hit.

The Grade 10 and Grade 12 pupils were told to go home because their classrooms were too badly damaged to continue working on Wednesday.

Damage

Dr Kenneth Kaunda municipality district director Hasimbhay Motara said some schools were severely damaged.

Besides Vuyani-Mawethu Secondary School, Borankanelo Secondary School was also damaged.

He said nobody was hurt.

“We are currently doing an assessment of the computer lab and the computers and then a way forward will be found,” Motara said.

Pupils played soccer while officials conducted their inspections.

The quake was also felt in large parts of the country and neighbouring states, such as Botswana and Mozambique.

The quake left a trail of damage in the North West province with the Matlosana local municipality being the hardest hit.

Houses damaged

About 400 houses were reportedly damaged in the township of Khuma and one person was killed.

Residents were on Wednesday morning still taking stock of the damage to houses.

Mamosa Melato, a woman whose house was destroyed, told Sapa the family slept in the RDP house behind the badly damaged structure, despite the provincial government pledging to assist residents.

“We slept in the RDP house. Officials just came and took samples of soil and bricks, and they said they would return today [Wednesday],” she said.

The premier’s office announced on Tuesday that 26 families from Khuma in Stilfontein, east of Klerksdorp in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda district municipality, whose households were badly damaged by the quake were receiving assistance in the form of temporary accommodation, food, and related basic needs.

Another resident Malehlohonolo Mosai, said her family was not visited by any member of the provincial government except for surveyors accompanied by Sapa.

“The only people who came to the house were those that evaluated the house and told us not to sleep in the house as it was not safe,” she said.

Mosai said they could not cook and had to go to bed hungry as they could not enter their two bedroom house.

“We slept hungry and even today the children went to school without bathing and eating,” said Mosai.

She appealed to government to help rebuild her house as she was unemployed and relied on state grants.

North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo and Matlosana mayor Mike Khauoe visited the area on Wednesday.

N West police refute allegations over a Nigerian man’s death in Rustenburg

By Obakeng Maje
Rustenburg- Police are investigating a case of murder after a 37-year-old Nigerian man was found dead outside a house in the suburb of Rustenburg North on Sunday at about 08:30.

Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said the deceased had a passport in his possession that expired in 2013, which confirmed his nationality.

“It is alleged that police went to the victim’s house searching for drugs at about 4h00 in the morning and allegations are that the man was assaulted by police after the search. The deceased was found lying on the ground with white foam coming out of his mouth with no physical injuries on his body” Ngubane outlines.

Rustenburg Police station received a report on the matter at about 8h00 in the morning when a call came through the community service centre reporting public violence in Rustenburg North.

“Police discovered a man lying dead on the ground on their arrival” he said.

The matter has been referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for further investigation.

At this stage the information is sketchy to confirm if indeed the deceased was assaulted or murdered by police. The outcome of the investigation will confirm or rescind this allegation.

“The police will corporate and allow IPID to do their investigation. As we would like to maintain that at this stage, only the investigation and post-mortem will confirm the cause of death. Unfounded and malicious speculations will not assist in finding the truth” concludes Ngubane.

Police urge anyone with information to report to the IPID for a speedy resolution of this matter.

Shot toddler: Man taken in for questioning

850e26c652644600803c1d57c15a58d7
Johannesburg – A man was taken in for questioning on Wednesday in connection with the Westbury shooting in which a 3-year-old boy was critically wounded, Gauteng police said.

“The 28-year-old man was a complainant in the case and further investigations led us to take him for questioning,” Warrant Officer Gordon Billing said.

Billing could not provide further information on the man.

On Tuesday, Lindray Khakhu, 24, appeared in the Newlands Magistrate’s Court and the matter was postponed to 12 August. He would remain in custody.

Khakhu was arrested for allegedly shooting and wounding 3-year-old Luke Tibbetts.

The case was handed over to the provincial police.

“The provincial police have taken over the case because there are a lot of conflicting stories from residents,” said Billing.

Residents had been providing police with different stories and more information was outstanding.

Boy still in a critical condition

Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said he was not aware that the case was being handled by provincial police, but they were likely to be involved.

“It does not carry much weight whether it’s the province or police station because it’s the same police. The provincial police usually helps if there is a need.”

The boy was critically wounded when he was shot, along with a 26-year-old man on Saturday evening.

The two were travelling in the area in different vehicles when they were hit by stray bullets.

They were taken to nearby hospitals.

The man was shot in his right arm and was treated and discharged.

Billing said the boy was still in a critical condition when he last saw him on Tuesday night.

Police were no longer allowed in the ward where the boy was because there were other patients.

“As far as I know he is still in critical condition. I left my contact [details] and I will be informed if there are any changes.”

The firearm used in the incident had not been recovered.

Mokoena bags gold at Games

Glasgow – Khotso Mokoena, formerly known as the only South African to win a medal at the 2008 Olympics, showed his big match temperament once again at a drenched Hampden Park in Glasgow on Saturday night when he won Commonwealth Games gold.

A leap of 17.20m in the triple jump on a miserable evening was enough to secure the victory, six years after he had brought home silver from the long jump at Beijing. His winning jump was in his second attempt and almost immediately more heavy rain fell, which suggested that it wasn’t going to be bettered.

And it wasn’t. Silver went to Nigeria’s Tosin Oke (16.84m) and bronze to India’a Arpinder Singh (16.63m). Mokoena’s golden leap was a season’s best for him and it again showed his love of the big stage.

It was also some 51cm better than his previous best for 2014 and only 0.05cm shy of his own national record.

And it showed his confidence, although some might interpret it differently. For he didn’t have a fifth or sixth attempt, electing to stay warm and dry as the rain pelted down, rightly believing that he couldn’t be caught.

It was South Africa’s 13th gold medal of the Games – beating the 12 of Delhi 2010 – and it also took the tally of medals to 39, beating the 33 of Delhi.

Johan Cronje’s dreams of winning a medal were dashed in the last stride when Nick Willis got his chest in front on the line in the men’s 1500m final. Cronje, who had cruised into the final impressively on Friday night, looked a medallist for 1499m of the race, before he was touched off by the charging New Zealander.

Perhaps there was no surprise in that the blue riband event was won by a Kenyan, James Magut edging out his 18-year-old compatriot Ronald Kwemoi in 3:39.31, with Willis third. Cronje had run a good race, sitting behind the Kenyans Elias Managoi and Magut and Uganda’s Ronald Musagala.

In fact, Cronje did everything right, running hard down the back straight on the final lap and then kicking for home around the bend. He got himself into a clear third but Willis seemed to find another gear in the final 50 metres and ran the South African out of it.

Conditions throughout the evening – no, make that the day – were atrocious as Glasgow showed a different side to that of earlier in the week when blue skies and temperatures in their 20s deg C had shown the face of summer.

This was typical British weather and of the kind that the athletes wouldn’t have enjoyed or been able to produce their best in. However, Mokoena would have been loving it after putting down his early marker.

In the men’s javelin final, Rocco van Rooyen had a best throw of 76.84m for sixth place overall.

Pitso blames Langerman

Johannesburg – Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has blamed defender Tebogo Langerman for his side’s 2-1 loss to Platinum Stars in an MTN8 quarter-final match at Loftus Stadium on Saturday, reports Soccer-Laduma website.

Goals from Vuyo Mere and Ndumiso Mabena handed Platinum Stars the win while Teko Modise scored a late consolation goal.

The first goal came from the penalty spot after Langerman brought Mduduzi Nyanda down inside the box, while a mistake by the same defender allowed Mabena through on goal to score the second.

“We made very crucial mistakes,” said Mosimane.

“With the penalty my fullback (Tebogo Langerman) was not clever there, he committed a very unprofessional foul inside the box.

“As a coach I cannot do anything about it, I just have to correct him.

“The second goal was also shift in the backs and from the same side, but it is ok, it is my job to correct it.”

Mosimane also bemoaned his side’s poor finishing in front of goal, but it is something they will work on.

“We could have scored some goals, but it is still early. We are not happy that we lost, but we accept it and congratulations to Platinum Stars,” added Mosimane.

“After they scored two goals, it was a totally different game – they didn’t want to come out and we played all the football in their half, but I don’t blame them for that.

“Talent we have, but when you make the mistakes we have it has nothing to do with the talent we have. If you don’t finish the chances you have it has nothing to do with the talent you have.

“The season is long and it is going to take some time.”

Alleged burglar shot dead in North West

Platinum Stars stun Sundowns

Pretoria – Platinum Stars got their defence of the MTN8 title off to a perfect start on Saturday afternoon, comfortably beating Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.

Skipper Vuyo Mere netted from the penalty spot just seven minutes in, before Ndumiso Mabena added a second shortly after to leave Sundowns with a mountain to climb by half-time.

Teko Modise’s tame free-kick effort deep into the second half pulled one back for the home side but it was not enough as Stars walked away victorious and got their season off to a promising start.

Sundowns, defending Premiership champions, made a return to the top eight competition after missing out last season, while Stars progress into the semifinals and continue to prove their pedigree in the country’s premier knockout competition.

Stars’ hard work at the top end of the half paid off from the first whistle as Mduduzi Nyanda was brought down inside the area by Tebogo Langerman, who was too slow and committed a reckless foul on six minutes, which drew few complaints from the home side.

Mere stepped up and made no mistake from the spot, handing Stars the early lead over their big-spending counterparts, who had no fewer than four new signings in their matchday team of 18.

Things went from bad to worse for the hosts eight minutes later when Mabena doubled Dikwena’s lead, following a superb pass from midfield, which unlocked the Sundowns defence and allowed Mabena to slot home from a tight angle.

With little in the way of goal-mouth action heading Sundowns way, the match was brought to an extraordinary halt on the half-hour mark when a swarm of bees, which had gathered on a microphone behind Stars goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane, forced referee Thando Ndzandzeka to stop the game and order the bees to be removed.

Deep into additional time, Sundowns finally had their best chance of the half, but Anthony Laffor failed to direct his header on target and went just wide of the upright following a superb delivery from Teko Modise.

Trailing at the break, Sundowns boss Pitso Mosimane changed Katlego Mashego for Bonginkosi Ntuli, after a disappointing first period.

Ntuli was involved from the start and played his part but still Sundowns failed to inspire in front of goal and struggled to make their mark inside the box.

Modise gave some relief to the home crowd when he managed to reduce the deficit and bagged a goal from the set-piece, following a defensive lapse which cost Mpontshane a clean-sheet.

But that was as far as it would go for the league champions, who bow out of the top eight and will now focus their attention elsewhere.
