IFP: Probe Youth Ambassadors programme

Johannesburg – The Inkatha Freedom Party in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday called for an investigation into the Youth Ambassadors programme following claims that some of its affiliates were unemployable.

“The IFP calls for a full scale independent investigation into the alleged claims that some of those who were recruited under the Youth Ambassadors programme are not employable by other companies because their names are still appearing in… the premier’s office,” provincial chairperson Blessed Gwala said in a statement.

“The premier must expedite this as matter of priority because even those who want to register for social grants are being denied as their names appear in the system as workers, employed by the premier’s office.”

Gwala said the investigation should also look at how much money was spent on the programme as former Youth Ambassadors claimed that the programme was for five years while they only worked for two years.

He asked who was benefiting from the money for the other three years.

“The premier must do right thing by telling our young people the truth and that the Youth Ambassadors Programme was meant for canvassing votes for the ANC during the recent general elections,” he said.

The premier’s spokesman Ndabezinhle Sibiya labelled the move by the IFP as a tactic to score cheap political points.

He said contrary to the misinformation being spread by the party, participants of the programme had informed them of the opportunities opened by the experience gained.

“We are receiving reports from those young people given opportunities to be ambassadors on how the experience gained was opening doors for them,” said Sibiya.

He said the programme only ran for two years.

Krejcir trial postponed

d39934fcede849118a38ef95ee4e7978

Johannesburg – The trial of Czech fugitive Radovan Krejcir and five others was postponed in the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg, sitting in Palm Ridge, on Thursday.

The matter was postponed to Friday after the court heard that State witness Captain Mashudu Freddy Ramuhala was unwell.

Krejcir also needed to consult a doctor as he was suffering from bronchitis.

Judge Colin Lamont has indicated the case needs to be concluded within four weeks as he has other cases to hear next month.

The matter has undergone numerous delays and is currently in a trial-within-a-trial.

It is aimed at establishing whether one of the accused, Desai Luphondo, was pressured into a confession by the police.

Ramuhala began testifying on Wednesday.

He is the investigating officer behind the arrest of Krejcir and five others charged with kidnapping, attempted murder and dealing in drugs.

Luphondo’s lawyer has told the court her client was kicked, slapped and suffocated when he was arrested by Ramuhala and other police officers last November.

Ramuhala has dismissed the alleged assault.

Luphondo, Krejcir, Warrant Officers Samuel “Saddam” Maropeng and George Nthoroane, Jan Lefu Mofokeng and Siboniso Miya were charged following allegations that they recruited a man known as Doctor Nkosi to help smuggle 25kg of tik (methamphetamine) to Australia, allegedly for Krejcir.

He worked for a cargo company at OR Tambo International Airport, when he disappeared with the shipment.

Krejcir and his co-accused allegedly then kidnapped and tortured his brother, Bheki Lukhele, in a bid to have him reveal his sibling’s whereabouts.

Nkosi has also testified in the trial, where he confessed to stealing the drugs.
