Kaizer Motaung says he was “blown away” by Steve Komphela’s successful bid for the Kaizer Chiefs job.

Chiefs on Wednesday unveiled Komphela as their new coach on a three-year contract.

The former Maritzburg United mentor replaced Stuart Baxter, who led Amakhosi to a League and MTN8 double this past season prior to joining Turkish side Genclerbirligi.

“Three weeks ago we bid farewell to an extraordinary coach,” Motaung said.

“We got a lot of CVs from all over but mainly from the national team coaches.

“I look at Steve as a coach, not as a black coach. His presentation blew me away.

“I am fully confident, that with the experience he’s gathered over the years, he deserves this platform.

“We welcome him back to the Kaizer Chiefs Village, he was once a player and also an assistant coach.

“The mandate is to continue the Kaizer Chiefs’ legacy of winning.”

The club’s football manager Bobby Motaung added: “We had about 25 to 30 applicants [for the job] … Steve Komphela was tops in terms of the criteria.”

Komphela represented Chiefs in defence during his playing days, while he was an assistant coach to Muhsin Ertugral at Naturena from 2000 to 2002.

The 47-year-old has also had stints in charge of Free State Stars, Platinum Stars and Bafana Bafana (caretaker boss in 2012).

Johannesburg – Anglican Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu said on Tuesday that some of the most powerful nations’ refusal to comply with the International Criminal Court had created an environment for South Africa to allow Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir into, and out of, the country.

“These powerful nations have created the rationale for the South African government to allow al-Bashir into the country despite the international warrant of arrest hanging over his head, and then to allow him to travel home despite a South African High Court order to the contrary,” said a statement issued by his foundation.
