Premier Modise said the province has made significant inroads with upgrade of infrastructure development in hospitals, Nursing colleges and health centres. “The extensions of Mmabatho and Excelsius nursing colleges are underway. The planning of Moses Kotane, Potchefstroom, Lichtenburg and Taung nursing schools are at an advanced stages” the Premier said in her State of the Province Address which marked official opening of the Provincial Legislature in Mmabatho on Friday.

Through the Hospital Revitalization Programme the province has managed to source funds for construction of 10 community health centres, Modise said.

A total of R478 million has been set aside for the construction of new psychiatric hospital in Mahikeng and the project is expected to be completed in the next 24 months.

Initially the plan was to construct a 648 beds hospital, but following extensive consultation with mental health experts and recommendations by World Health Organization a decision was reached to downsize psychiatric hospital in favour of community based psychiatric health care facilities.

“This will increase access to mental health care services and also boost chances of psychiatric patients to respond to treatment as they will be treated and cared next to home.” She highlighted

The province will still meet the target of 648 psychiatric beds. About 384 beds will be at the hospital and the remaining beds will be spread across four districts of the province.

No condoms will be provided at school

Image

Durban – No condoms would be distributed at schools built on Catholic Church property, according to a report.

The Sunday Times reported that Cardinal Wilfred Napier, head of the church in SA, has dismissed the plan by the KwaZulu-Natal education department as “short-sighted” and “immoral”.

Napier voiced his dissatisfaction about the move to curb teen pregnancies in a letter to education MEC Senzo Mchunu.

Mchunu’s decision followed a conference last month to find solutions to sexual abuse, teen pregnancy and substance abuse in the province.

“Once something is distributed by people in authority, children take it as an okay. I cannot understand the lack of insight into the psychological damage that is being done to the younger generation,” Napier told the newspaper.

According to the newspaper Mchunu confirmed that condoms would not be distributed to Catholic schools.

“There are some public schools who have strong relations with Catholics. We well continue to talk to them, but we respect their beliefs as well.” – Sapa

Polokwane-Expelled ANC Youth League president Julius Malema is accused of playing a dirty game after some of bidders for his belongings that went under the hammer we left disappointed.

Malema properties were auctioned on friday by SARS after he allegedly owed the instistution close to R16m.

SARS attached all Malema’s valuable belongings and auctioned the to recoup tax debt.

However according to reports, Julius Malema “hides” his valuable properties as what was auctioned does not match his lavish lifestyle.

It is alleged that Malema valuable belongings were worth R54 000.

“I bought a mirror worth R300 and I am so disappointed about what a saw auctioned here as it is quite opposite compared to what he used to have” Malema’s former friend, Boy Mamabolo told http://www.timelive.co.za.

“I bought a piano for my church and to me that does not bother me who the previous owner was” Norman Motaung said.

Julius Malema found himself on the wrong side of the law after SARS questioned his lavish lifestyle.

It is alleged that Malema owns a two houses and a farmer which will be attached at the later stage.

“The sheriff will have written up an inventory of everything. So we are confident that all attempts to get around the administrations of justice will be futile” said Sars Adrian Lackay.

Modise: Early Child Development a priority

Image

NW to expand Early Childhood Development programme to rural communities

The North West Province will be expanding access to Early Child Development(ECD)

Centres to children in rural communities in order to reach 29,6 % of children between 0-4 years who do not have no access to the ECD

 programmes.

This pronouncement on the extension of the primary service to improve quality of EDC Centres was made by Premier Thandi Modise in her State of the Province Address delivered in the provincial legislature on Friday.

Premier Modise reported that only 26,4 percent of the children who are supposed to be at ECD Centres have access to the programme.

To address this challenge, Modise said that the partnership that the Department of Education had established with the National Development Agency will be strengthened with the involvement of the Department of Social Development and Ilifa Labantwana (a national ECD programme) to expand ECD centres to rural areas.

Nutrition programmes are also used as a value-added measure for growth and wellness of children.

Zille lauds Tlokwe municipality

Image

There have been significant improvements in the Tlokwe Local Municipality, in the North West, in the three months since a DA mayor was appointed there, party leader Helen Zille said on Saturday.

“While the Democratic Alliance may continue to govern in Tlokwe for only a few days more, we can be proud that we have made major strides in making this a more delivery-focused municipality,” Zille said in a statement.

Tlokwe includes the towns of Klerksdorp, Orkney and Haartebeesfontein.

Divisions between Tlokwe African National Congress councillors resulted in a motion of no confidence being passed in mayor Maphetle Maphetle in November 2012, and the DA’s Annette Combrink replacing him.

Zille claimed that on Tuesday, under the instruction of President Jacob Zuma and ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe, the ANC would try to regain control of the municipality “without following the proper processes”.

On Saturday Zille visited Ikangeng, in the municipality, to see the progress made during Combrink’s tenure.

“Under the ANC, residents became used to poor or non-existent service delivery,” she said.

This included 100 housing units, which were built in August last year but had not been connected to water or sewerage networks. The buildings were vandalised as they had not been handed over to the intended beneficiaries, she said.

Zille said the DA was connecting the units to the infrastructure and they would soon be handed over.

Under the ANC certain parts of Ikangeng became illegal dumping sites, but she said the DA embarked on a clean up operation in these areas.

“Residents now live in a cleaner, safer environment – that is the DA difference.”

Zille said other initiatives undertaken by the party in Tlokwe included repairs to fire fighting vehicles and the training of 30 entrepreneurs in small business management.

The DA also asked the auditor general to probe whether the cost of a mayoral car, ordered by Maphetle, could be recovered.

Zille said the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, with customised rosewood interior, cost R736,000 in public funds.

She said the party was also addressing 63 financial irregularities incurred by the ANC.

“Under the ANC, R143 million was irregularly spent last year alone, and a further R152 million was spent without proper authorisation.

“This type of mismanagement does not happen where the DA governs, and it would never occur in a DA-governed Tlokwe,” Zille said. – Sapa

Nedbank Cup

Result: Wits 0-3 Chiefs

Date: 23 February 2013

Venue: Mbombela Stadium

Kaizer Chiefs cruised into the last 16 of the Nedbank Cup after a convincing 3-0 win over Wits on Saturday night.

The Clever Boys enjoyed a solid start to the game as Matthew Pattison’s free-kick caused some problems for the Chiefs defence in the third minute.

Amakhosi responded in the eight minute though with Matthew Rusike who darted toward goal but he was closed out by Wits.

Erwin Isaacs saw his clever pass cut out by Erick Mathoho while Chiefs saw a strike ruled out in the 14th minute due to the offside flag.

Siphiwe Tshabalala fired a 30-yard free-kick well wide in the 24th minute while a good break from the visitors moments later saw Kingston Nkhatha lash a shot wide after being played in brilliantly by Tshabalala.

The game picked up in excitement as Ryan Chapman was found out at the other end but saw his header crash off the crossbar.

Chiefs would then hit the front when Siboniso Gaxa was played in by a superb pass from Tshabalala through the centre of the defence which the full-back poked through the legs of the goalkeeper and bundled home.

Rusike worked some space in the 42nd minute but saw his shot deflected wide as Wits struggled to get back into the game and Chiefs held onto the lead at the break.

Lucky Baloyi hit a shot straight at the goalkeeper two minutes into the second-half but the Glamour Boys would secure their second goal three minutes later.

Chiefs were controversially awarded a corner and Tshabalala’s fierce delivery was glanced home by Morgan Gould.

Amakhosi were piling forward and Nkhatha almost added a third in the 66th minute but his curling strike came off the crossbar.

Bernard Parker then rolled a shot just wide while Tshabalala was replaced after going off injured in the 75th minute.

Chiefs’ dominance was further rewarded with nine minutes to go as Nkhatha’s fierce low strike was saved by Ryan Harrison but Mandla Masango nodded the rebound against the post and Harrison could only help it over the line.

Amakhosi calmly saw out the remaining few minutes as they claimed a comfortable win over the Clever Boys.
