Zeerust-A police officer sentenced to three years yesterday by Zeerust Magistrate’s Court.

“Warrant Officer Ofentse Joel Gaotime (45) was sanctioned to three years imprisonment on Friday for livestock theft amounting to R10 000 00”.  

“The owner of the calves allegedly received a tip-off from member of community about commission of crime taking place at hís farm” colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said.

On December 2010 the owner of the calves allegedly received a tip-off about two people stealing his calves. He allegedly went to investigate and found three calves loaded in a minibus.

“Police were informed and through investigations, they found the said vehicle parked in Ikageleng, at Gaotime’s house with three stolen calves inside” Mokgwabone said. 

Three suspects were immediately arrested and charged with possession of suspected stolen livestock. 

“One of the suspects was discharged as he could not be linked to the case while the other one was sentenced to one year imprisonment of which was suspended for five years in 2011” he said. 

The police would like to send out a message that crime does not pay as they can also arrest one of their own and that criminal activities will not tolerated within South African Police Service.

Taung-North West police are investigating of ATM bombing after FNB machine was bombed in Taung.

Police said they do not have more details about how much amount of money has been stolen from the machine, but said they will reveal more after investigations.

“The incident happened at the early hours of today and for now we can’t shed any information as Forensic police were at the scene” sergeant Kelebogile Moiloa said.

“Up to so far no one has been arrested and police are investigating. We also waiting for FNB to determine how much has been stolen before we could confirm figures” Moiloa said.

The ATM was allegedly bombed and according to other reports, the machine was loaded yesterday.

Mahikeng-The North West Committee on Traditional Leadership Disputes and Claims has finalised investigations into 102 disputes involving traditional leadership and presented its recommendations for consideration, North West Premier Thandi Modise told the Portfolio Committee on Provincial Affairs and Finance in the Provincial Legislature on Friday.

Premier Modise has committed to brief the portfolio committee on the findings of the committee after she has applied her mind to the recommendations of the committee.

Although Premier Modise has in terms of the Traditional Leadership and Governance Framework Act 41 of 2003 up to 60 days to study the report and apply her mind to the findings and recommendations of the committee, she has committed to finalise the matters a lot sooner than the maximum period set by the Act that established the Commission on Traditional Leadership Disputes and Claims. The Commission’s Provincial Committee is scheduled to meet with Kgosi James Ramokoka and the Ba-Phalane Royal Family on Tuesday to gather information on the history of traditional leadership of Ba Baphalane, their customary law of succession and confirm their genealogy.

The meeting follows the 22 March 2013 North West High Court ruling by Honourable Judge Landman that dismissed with costs an application for interdict by Kgosi James Ramokoka preventing the Commission on Traditional Leadership Disputes and Claims from investigating, conducting hearings, compiling and submitting a report in respect of the dispute regarding the chieftaincy over the Baphalane Tribe lodged by Bosman Noah Ramokoka.

Meanwhile, The Provincial Committee has appealed to representatives of the Bahurutshe Ba-Moiloa Boo Ramotshere Royal Family not to proceed with arrangements for inauguration of a successor to the late Kgosi Monnaamere J Godfrey Moiloa on15 June 2013 until it has finalised its investigations as to who should be the rightful heir to the chieftainship and Premier Modise has issued the heir with a recognition certificate.

The appeal is in line with a High Court ruling that directed that the current regent should remain at the helms of the affairs of the tribe until investigations are finalised and a recognition certificate is issued by the Premier.

The Commission for Traditional Leadership Disputes and Claims was established in terms of the Traditional Leadership and Governance Framework Act to restore the dignity and integrity of the traditional communities and the entire institution of traditional leadership across the country.

KwaZulu-Natal – A man was given two life sentences in the Empangeni Regional Court for rape, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Saturday.

Mjabulo Nyawo, 27, was sentenced on Friday for raping a three and a nine-year-old, Colonel Vincent Mdunge said.

“On October 10, 2011, two girls from Mgazi area outside Empangeni were sent by their aunt to borrow a charger to their uncle’s neighbouring place.”

When the girls went into the man’s house he raped them.

“The accused sent them back home with a cellphone charger and the nine-year-old victim reported the matter to her aunt.”

Nyawo was arrested on November 26, 2011.

“This is a victory, not only for the SAPS, but for all vulnerable women and children in this country,” provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni said.

“The court could not have passed a more fitting sentence and this will certainly send out a strong message to other criminals.” – Sapa

Johannesburg – In defiance of Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa’s refusal to publicly disclose a list of national key points, the bid by civil society coalition Right2Know (R2K) to “crowd source” the list has turned up 84 of the estimated 180 to 200 sites.

It’s taken only a matter of days, according to R2K national spokesman Murray Hunter, who said the campaign was proving “extremely successful”.

Most of the key points identified so far are fairly obvious, such as buildings and installations belonging to the SABC, Sasol and Eskom as well as military installations and nuclear facilities. They also include major civilian airports, the Reserve Bank, Parliament and various presidential and ministerial residences.

Naval Command at Silvermine, where thieves regularly enter with ease to steal the copper cable, is also a key point.

More interesting is the Onderstepoort Biological Products Unit, in view of its history of secret research on the development of internationally prohibited germ and chemical warfare products during apartheid.

Hunter said the public had also come forward with information about key points that R2K did not know about. “These include the Vaal Dam, North West provincial legislature and the Sentech towers.

“I think a lot of citizens will be surprised to see private sector bodies on this list – such as BP, Engen and Shell refineries. Why should these companies, with such a shoddy record when it comes to corporate responsibility and transparency, be given such broad powers?”

R2K’s initiative was sparked after Mthethwa’s office said, in March, that disclosing the country’s national key points was a security risk.

Johannesburg – Bus company SA Roadlink said on Saturday that it was solvent despite reports that it faced liquidation if it does not repay a multi-million rand bank loan.

“SA Roadlink Passenger Services (Pty) Ltd is solvent and continuing with its daily business of providing coaches on the national roads, whilst serving public interests and looking after them on the road,” it said in a statement.

On Friday The New Age newspaper reported that the company owed FirstRand bank R6 million and could be liquidated by Tuesday.

The bank had reportedly applied for a liquidation order in the High Court in Johannesburg, claiming the bus company was in a “dire financial position and unable to pay its debts.”

According to the newspaper, Roadlink bought five buses each worth R1.08m in 2011, and was R1.4m in arrears on the payments, excluding interest, by November 2012. It also reportedly owed Scania SA, a bus manufacturing company, R1m.

The newspaper reported that the bank took the R6.8m joint loan with a company called Satlog.

In a statement on Saturday, SA Roadlink said the article was published without approaching it for comment or to provide accurate information which resulted in “a misleading and factually incorrect article”.

It said there were no overdue payments to Scania after they reached a mutually agreed settlement.

Spokesman Marnus Kruger said the two parties have met out of court and the settlement would be made an order in court on Tuesday.

Johannesburg – Six people were arrested for murder and rape in Inanda, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Saturday.

“Police launched an operation on Thursday night to find suspects for murder cases committed in the area.

“A team of detectives arrested these suspects who had terrorised the community for a long time,” said spokesman Colonel Vincent Mdunge.

Two of the men were charged with murder after they allegedly kidnapped a man from a building outside his home Emanyaseni.

His body was discovered two weeks later by a man herding cattle in the bushes.

“Three men were also arrested for a double murder which took place on Monday when a group of guys allegedly attacked and killed two young men.”

The sixth man was charged with house robbery and rape which took place in the Bhambhayi area., said Mdunge.

The men, who are aged between 18 and 36, would appear in the Ntuzuma Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Johannesburg – Police are probing the cause of a blaze that ripped through the Broadacres Shopping Centre in northern Johannesburg, a report said on Saturday.

According to Eyewitness News, all employees were swiftly evacuated and the fire, which had started around 19:00, was quickly contained.

Sapa reported that two people were treated for smoke inhalation and taken to a nearby hospital, but no other injuries were reported.

EWN said that three restaurants bore the brunt of the fire, the cause of which is still unclear.
