Communities encouraged to revive the spirit of ubuntu

The levels of violence against women and children in South Africa is concerning. Women, children and people with disabilities in particular are the most susceptible to violence.

“Not only are these groups vulnerable but are disadvantaged by factors such as poverty, unemployment, access to justice, isolation, etc”departmental spokesperson Dumisa Seshabela said.

In a bit to combat such violence, the Department of Mineral Resource through the North West Provincial Department of Economy and Enterprise Development on Thursday took part in the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children campaign by raising awareness about the negative impact of violence on women and children.

The campaign was held in Madibogo Village (Ratlou Local Municipality), and was attended by approximately 350 people comprising of youths, government officials, municipalities and community members.

The campaign this year marks 16 years of existence, during which considerable awareness on issues of violence against women and children was generated.

Showing support and giving observations to the campaign, Cllr Petrus Matebele, Chief Whip, Ratlou Municipality speaking on behalf of Mayor, Cllr. Victor Mance, said the period in which the campaign is held, coincide with the commemoration of the World AIDS Day on 01 December and the international Day of Persons with Disabilities on 03 December and it allows us to focus on the link between sexual violence and the spread of HIV infection as well as incidents of abuse experienced by women, children and persons with disabilities.

“It has shown in the Research conducted by the Medical Research Council that one in every four women in South African population generally has experienced physical violence at some point in her life” Seshabela said.
Giving keynote address for the day, Dr. Thibedi Ramontja; Director General in the Department of Mineral Resources stressed that community members needed to work together with the South African Police Services and government in order to highlight, speak out and to find solutions against women and children abuse.

“The campaign has been adopted by government as one of the intervention strategies toward creating a society where women and children are safe. Government has been making strides in combating violence against women and children. We have seen an increase in the number of perpetrators who are serving life sentences for committing such violence”, said Dr Ramontja.

Through awareness campaigns education and sharing of knowledge government will be able to create a greater understanding of the challenges faced by both genders in particular women which could lead to increased respect and safety.

Director General said that the Department of Mineral Resources has prioritized the safety and promotion of female participation within their department and the mining industry.

“He further said we all need to stand up against the deteriorating moral values that lead to the increasing number of brutal rapes and abuses of baby girls and elderly women. Let us revive and encourage the spirit of Ubuntu in our communities” she said.

National Police Commissioner To Visit Wolmaransstad

By Reginald Kanyane
Wolmaransstad- The South African Police Service National Commissioner General Riah Phiyega will be launching the Frontline Service Delivery Project at  Wolmaransstad Police Station, North West Province on Thursday.

The Frontline Service Delivery Project is a collaborative initiative of the Department of Performance, Monitoring and Evaluation (DPME) in the Presidency.

“It involves unannounced visits to service delivery institutions that interact directly with the public” colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said.

According to SAPS Strategic Plan 2010 to 2014, in terms of organizational environment, the police stations that serve local communities are the window to the SAPS because it is at this level that the vast majority of the citizens of the country access the services provided by the SAPS, as mandated by Section 205 of the Constitution.

The SAPS has developed and implemented a number of initiatives during the preceding five years aimed specifically at improving the levels of service delivery at station level.

Two of the strategic priorities of SAPS are Crime Prevention and Investigation of Crime.

Hence the theme:“TOWARDS AN EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE FRONTLINE SERVICE FOR SAFER SOUTH AFRICA”.

“This implies that SAPS has committed itself to provide/render an efficient and effective frontline service to the communities of South Africa.

“It is envisaged that a professional, well-coordinated and holistic approach that will contribute towards the realization of “Vision 2030” of safe and secure communities where all people are and feel safe in their homes, public places and places of work in South Africa is achieved” Mokgwabone said.

Hence enhancement of Front-line Service Delivery will contribute directly to the realization of one of the significant focus areas of National Development Plan i.e. a professional police service – a key component of the Criminal Justice System. A multi-disciplinary approach will ensure that joint programmes are undertaken to prevent crime and violence and assist in managing the public crime perception.

Therefore the Frontline service delivery Programme is aimed at supporting policing through the engagement of all communities, revamping of the service points, providing the necessary resources and empowering the personnel to strengthen relationship with the police and enhance the image of the police to the general public.

Mokgwabone said this will be the first SAPS Frontline Service Delivery launch in the country.

The launch will be held as follows:

Date: Thursday, 11 December 2014

Top Sars officials suspended

Johannesburg – Deputy SA Revenue Service’s commissioner Ivan Pillay and group executive of strategic planning and risk Peter Richers have been suspended, the revenue service announced on Friday.

“I have… decided to suspend the following two senior executives pending a disciplinary process in terms of the Sars disciplinary code and procedure, and applicable labour laws including the Labour Relations Act,” Sars commissioner Tom Moyane said in a statement.

Following media allegations against some of senior officials Pillay appointed a panel to investigate the existence and truthfulness of the allegations, he said.

Advocate Muzi Sikhakhane, SC, together with a panel of senior advocates were tasked with investigating the allegations.

On November 16, it was reported that Moyane halted his executive committee’s advisory duties.

The Sunday Times reported that Moyane had elected to rather deal with the various managers on an individual basis.

Sars has been at the centre of reports over the last few weeks about an allegedly rogue intelligence unit that was set up in 2007.

Previously, the Sunday Times reported allegations that the unit had been involved in setting up a brothel in Durban as a cover for officials working from home, had spied on a wide range of people, including taxi hitmen, druglords, cigarette and abalone smugglers, Sars officials and politicians, and that some Sars officials were infiltrated into the ANC as bodyguards.

In September, then head of tax and customs investigations – who allegedly headed the unit at one time – Johann van Loggenberg, was placed on special leave pending a probe into allegations of misconduct.

In November, Sars spokesman Adrian Lackay urged that the investigation into the matter be allowed to complete its work, before further discussion, while the City Press newspaper reported that Monyane had formally suspended Van Loggenberg.

The Sunday Times published what is said what an extract of his notice of suspension that said he had been suspended in order to “provide for full investigations into allegations against you of irregularities, misconduct and bringing the organisation’s name and reputation into disrespect”.

The newspaper reported that Van Loggenberg denied all allegations against him.
