CHRISTIANA- The District Clinical Specialist Team (DCST) recently held a very progressive, informative and a successful Training on Helping Babies breathe at birth in Christiana.

This comes as is possible that new born babies are either born breathing or not breathing accordingly as they should.

When the child is not breathing even after giving them a slight slap, to the Professional nurse(s) and the Midwife (wives) these are some of the vital signs to pick up and know how to medically/scientifically respond to them.

All (6) five Operational Managers, (2) two midwives and (2) two Doctors in Lekwa-Teemane Health Sub-District including The Christiana District Hospital received this much needed intensified exercise to help increase awareness on how to Help Babies Breathe on their after birth.

“As neonatalie simulator (dolls) was used to demonstrate how to help a new born baby breathe, participants took turns to literally carry out exercises themselves. The exercises include amongst others the accurate way of washing hands and techniques of comforting and talking to mothers as all this shall be happening before their eye (immediately after delivery). Preparation of the venue (delivery room), assessment and full implementation are key dynamics which in depth emphasis was focused” DR Ruth Segomotsi Mompati department of Health spokesperson Omphile Morwaagae said.

“Clearing airway and stimulating, keeping warm and constant checking of breathing as well as the endless checking of the heart rate is very crucial”, says Dr Joyce Mareverwa (Dr RSM DCST Paediatrician).

“It is important to realize that learning is not simply acquiring facts but that what you are doing is important, and must have the relevant skills to provide quality health care to our communities at large” she concludes.

Morwaagae said at the end of the exercise all participants were evaluated and assessed based on the training they had received and awarded certificates.

Bafana squad assemble for friendly

images
Twenty-four Bafana Bafana players have reported for national team duty ahead of the two friendly international matches against Swaziland and Nigeria.

South Africa faces neighbours Swaziland on Wednesday, 25 March at the Somhlolo Stadium, kicking off at 19h00, and four days later (Sunday, 29 March) will welcome Nigeria at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit.

Kick-off is at 15h30.

The players assembled for camp on Sunday, 22 March and will conduct their first training session in Johannesburg on Monday afternoon (23 March).

The team was expected to depart for Swaziland today but have had to postpone their travel to Tuesday (24 March) due to some players only expected to arrive tonight – Denmark-based Lebogang Phiri as well as Holland-based Thulani Serero and Kamohelo Mokotjo.

The squad will however be without two injured players – midfielder May Mahlangu and defender Anele Ngcongca.

Mahlangu is recovering in South Africa and reported for camp on Sunday where he was checked by the team medico, Dr Thulani Ngwenya and has since been released from camp due to a fractured foot bone.

Ngcongca’s club has informed Bafana Bafana that the player is suffering from an Achilles tendon and will not be able to honour the national team call-up. Ngwenya has spoken to their medical team and club will forward the scan results for the team doctor to peruse.

Doncaster Rovers FC, where midfielder Dean Furman plies his trade in England, has requested that he be excused from the matches as they have a tight schedule of matches. The club is in League One, and is thus not included in the FIFA Calendar, but will only get a postponement if three or more players are called for national team duties – which is not the case this time – only Dean has been called up from his club.

“We have called up 30 players and have covered every position, so we will not replace any of those who are unable to come to camp. I think it is also a blessing in disguise in that we will be able to test out the players we have called-up – for instance Dean has been playing with Andile in the middle of the park, so it would be great to see who else could fill in that role. To be frank we would have loved to have all players available but seeing it is not possible we have to move on,” said Bafana Bafana head coach Ephraim Shakes Mashaba.

“Also on the question of Dean, we have accepted the request because we want to build relations with these clubs. It is important that when they have a request like this we should consider it favourably because in future we will be the ones needing to make a request to these clubs.”

BY OBAKENG MAJE
THE community of Morokweng village in Taung took the matter into their own hands deposing one of the stock-theft suspects, Marumo Legakwe (48) out of their village.

Legakwe was arrested a month ago along with his accomplice, Nicholas Hlela(38) from Kwazulu-Natal after being accused of stock-theft in the area.

The two briefly appeared before court and were granted R1000 bail each against the residents’ will.

On Friday (20 March 2015) the community allegedly went his kraal and reduced it to ashes.

Morokweng chief, Monnatau Molehe said the decision was taken by community members, so as he is a leader he adhered to the call.

“I can say this man arrived here more than four years in our village. When he arrived here, he asked to stay only for two days but after two days he refused to go.

“The community wanted him out because he was stealing their livestock, now he has been arrested. They decided to burn down his kraal and remove his livestock out of the village” Molehe said.

One of the residents, Pule Moeng said livestock-theft really cripples the economy and that affects their lives as they rely on livestock as source of income.

“Livestock-theft is really affecting us as most of us are unemployed. We need to fight livestock-theft and make sure all perpetrators are brought to book” Moeng said.

The two will be back in court on the 23 April 2015 and police investigations continue.

Pampierstad- Northern Cape MEC for Co-operative, Human Settlements & Traditional Affairs(Coghsta), Alvin Botes led the province in commemorating Human Rights Day in Pampierstad.

The commemoration was held at Kgomotso High School, in Pampierstad and being attended by Phokwane Municipal Mayor, Robert Tsikwe, Executive Mayor for Francis Baardman, Kgadi Moloi and other delegates.

Botes took the youth through memory lane by touching on the history of Human Rights Day and told the youth of today to learn more about the history of the fallen heroes.

“The youth of today need to know more about history. By them knowing that, they will know their identity and where they’re going. It is very important to realize that the fight is now different as we fighting economical freedom” Botes said.

He also advised the youth to go to school as education is the gateway vehicle from poverty.

The Phokwane municipality mayor, Robert Tsikwe said this mark the historic day in Phokwane municipality’s calendar.

He said country’s greatest achievements is the adoption of the Constitution which guarantees human rights that had never been a guarantee for the majority of South Africans.

“It is our responsibility to ensure that these rights are not just a theory, but every human being can actually see and experience these rights for themselves,” said Tsikwe said.

The MEC also handed over smart card Identity Documents to seven elders from Jan Kempdorp.

Pan Africanist Congress (PAC) proposed an anti-Pass campaign to begin on 21 March 1960. Black men were to gather at Sharpeville without their reference books and present themselves for arrest. The order was given to disperse, after which the Police opened fire with sharp-point ammunition on the crowd of men, women and children.

Following the Sharpeville massacre, a number of black political movements were banned by the Nationalist government, and the resistance movement went underground.

Evelyn Mxobethu(63) who received her smartcard for the first time said she really appreciate what the government does especially to elders.

Parliament dismisses concerns of Zuma bias

30c5da1f7d2d44c7a8ecc367a9d44be3
Johannesburg – Parliament on Sunday dismissed accusations by opposition parties that the presiding officers were biased and protecting President Jacob Zuma.”Presiding officers note the repeated, unfounded assertions where, as they manage the business of Parliament, they are often accused of either protecting the president or acting in a biased, partisan manner,” Parliament said in a statement.

“In examining these issues objectively, it is quite clear that they are without basis and are not supported by fact.”

There had been unprecedented events which had the potential to impact negatively on Parliament’s ability to carry out its mandate, it said.

These events were unique to the fifth Parliament.

Parliament said MPs had freedom of speech subject to parliamentary rules and orders and the rules had to be respected.

“Disruptions and disorder can only contribute to undermining Parliament’s constitutional functions.

“The matter of the decorum of Parliament continues to receive attention.”

Decorum agreed to

Opposition parties met with Speaker Baleka Mbete earlier this week.

Parliament said during the meeting parties agreed to maintain decorum.

“The presiding officers are confident that current engagements between the presiding officers and party leaders will go a long way in affirming the integrity of Parliament and ensuring that it is able to function.

“At the last meeting there was recognition of the need to allow matters currently before the courts to run their course.”

It said the presiding officers were committed to that.

The Democratic Alliance has approached the Western Cape High Court to challenge the constitutional validity of section 11 of the Powers and Privileges Act, which allows the Speaker to summon the police into the National Assembly.

No cover up on Nkandla – DA

ed8a1b14ba504ffebe121a55040f9c29

Johannesburg – The DA will not take part in a “secret process” to cover up President Jacob Zuma‘s financial liability regarding the security upgrades to his private home in Nkandla, the opposition party said on Sunday.

“We will not be co-opted, behind closed doors, into agreeing to a sanitised version,” Democratic Alliance parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimanesaid in a statement.

“The R246m spent on President Zuma’s private residence is a public crime that needs to be dealt with publicly, in a transparent and open manner.”

He said during meetings with National Assembly Speaker Baleka Mbete this week it was agreed that the Nkandla ad hoc committee would reconstitute in order to deal with Police MinisterNathi Nhleko‘s determination and report on the security upgrades.

Zuma denies wrongdoing

In a report released in March last year, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela said Zuma had unduly benefited from the non-security upgrades to his private Nkandla residence, which totalled R246m.

She recommended that Zuma pay back “a reasonable percentage of the cost”.

However, during an answer session in the National Assembly on 11 March Zuma flatly denied personal wrongdoing and any obligation to repay state money spent on his home.

Zuma said he faced no criminal charges over the project, and was under no pressure to reimburse the state because at this stage it was still up to Nhleko to decide whether he was liable to repay any portion of the sum.

Nhleko’s decision was only due at month’s end, he added.

According to City Press on Sunday, Mbete wanted Parliament to receive a sanitised version of the latest report.

‘Nkandla debacle gone on for too long’

She reportedly offered opposition party leaders a confidential briefing by Nhleko in return for them agreeing to handle the Nkandla report in secret before an edited version was presented in the National Assembly.

However, some opposition parties had described the offer as “flawed and dubious” and refused to be “complicit” in keeping details of the latest report on Nkandla secret.

Maimane said the Nkandla debacle had gone on for too long and the DA was waiting for Nhleko’s public determination of how much Zuma owed for the upgrades.

“The DA will not be part of any secret process to cover up President Jacob Zuma’s financial liability for the taxpayer-funded upgrades to his private residence at Nkandla,” he said.

“For too long, President Zuma has evaded responsibility for allowing the maladministration of taxpayer money, which should have instead been used to improve the lives of South Africans.”
