Eskom’s Tsotsi to face vote of no confidence

Johannesburg – Board members at South Africa’s Eskom will vote on whether to remove chairperson Zola Tsotsi on Wednesday, sources said, deepening a leadership crisis at the power utility as chronic power cuts hobble Africa’s most developed economy.

Minister of Public Enterprises Lynne Brown told parliament on Wednesday the power outages were costing the economy between $1.7bn and $6.8bn a month and that she was concerned about the management at state-owned Eskom.

According to bdlive.co.za, “Brown has asked for legal opinion from her department on how she can legally intervene in the affairs of troubled Eskom without contravening the Companies Act and the utility’s memorandum of incorporation”.

Eskom’s board will hold a vote of no confidence in Tsotsi, a government source and a source at Eskom told Reuters. Brown said she had not been “formally informed” about Tsotsi’s future.

“I am very worried because Eskom is a strategic asset, all of our lives depend on it,” she said.

If Tsotsi is ousted, he would become the latest casualty at the troubled power utility after its chief executive and three other senior executives were suspended earlier this month.

Eskom has implemented regular power cuts this year to prevent the national grid being overwhelmed as South Africa faces its worst energy crisis since 2008.

School cooks fired for peeing in buckets used for kids’ food

2590846120
Pupils at Mpindweni Junior Secondary School outside Mthatha stopped eating their school meals after witnessing the cooks urinating into the buckets used for preparing and serving the food.
According to Dispatch Live, this was exposed when pupils were asked why they stopped eating the school meals.

The cooks allegedly regularly used the food buckets to urinate into since last year because the toilets are too far from the kitchen.

“We were told that they had been doing it for some time. We noticed that the children did not want to eat the food. When we heard what they were doing we called them [the cooks] in. They, of course denied it, but one of them admitted to using a basin to pee into,” said principal Emelda Pendu.

Electoral court dismisses Tlokwe application

The Electoral Court has dismissed an application by independent candidates in Tlokwe, in the North West, to set aside the 2013 by-elections based on alleged irregularities.

The eight candidates wanted a forensic investigation into alleged corruption during the by-elections in December in 2013.

“[The court] came to the conclusion that the application must fail in its entirety,” the Electoral Court said in its judgment handed down on Thursday.

However, the court said the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) had an obligation and responsibility in election processes as enshrined in the Constitution.

“The point is simply that, in spite of its recognition of the task, and the assurance it gave that it did its best to comply with its statutory obligations in relation to the applicants’ concerns, the commission can and should do better.

“All the issues raised in this application, and they are crucial, ought to be addressed with all interested parties outside of the litigation process.”

No cost order was made in the application.

Independent candidates were arguing against the IEC’s finding that only 1040 people voted illegally in the by-elections in 2013, saying the number was much higher.

In September, City Press reported that the IEC had admitted that 1040 illegal voters made their mark in the Tlokwe municipal by-elections. However, it insisted that the illegal votes did not change the outcome of the elections.

The admission was contained in a rejoinder affidavit filed with the Electoral Court in June and signed by chief electoral officer Mostho Moepya.

The case, which started in December 2013, was reportedly postponed in June and was supposed to be heard in August. But it was again postponed indefinitely after Moepya’s affidavit revealed that some registrations were illegal.

The by-elections were called after nine ANC councillors were fired by the party for refusing to support former Tlokwe mayor Mapetla Mapetla.

Independent candidates in nine of the wards asked the court to set aside the results and institute an independent investigation.

The African National Congress won eight of the nine wards.

A 30-year-old man was critically injured when residents of Majakaneng accused him of being part of a gang who robbed a house and raped a woman, North West police said on Monday.

Early on Sunday morning, a woman reported a case of house robbery and rape to Mooinooi police, Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said.

“It is alleged that six suspects went into the victim’s boyfriend’s place while she was asleep, three stood outside and three went inside the house, one carried a firearm while the other two raped her.

“The suspects fled the scene with a plasma TV and some of her boyfriend’s clothes.”

Later on Sunday, an elderly woman reported to police that a man had pointed a firearm at her and ordered her to undress but then left her without physically harming her.

“The situation in Majakaneng got out hand when the community heard about those cases and they started to barricade the roads,” Ngubane said.

They saw the 30-year-old man carrying a plasma TV and began to beat him. Police intervened and the man was taken to hospital.

Police and the traffic department cleared the roads and the situation had returned to normal by Monday morning.

Johannesburg- South African Football Association (SAFA) President, Dr Danny Jordaan has wished the SA national cricket team, the Proteas good luck in their ICC Cricket World Cup semi-final match against New Zealand on Tuesday morning.

Both nations have never made it to the cricket World Cup final before and the winner will play either India or Australia in the final in Melbourne.

Dr Jordaan said he was impressed by how the Proteas have played throughout the tournament and added that they have what it takes to go all the way.

“We want to congratulate Cricket SA and the Proteas for a fine World Cup campaign. We have truly been impressed and inspired by their performances and would like to wish them well against New Zealand. We are confident that they will go all the way. They have what it takes to beat New Zealand in their own backyard and go on to lift the trophy,” said Dr Jordaan.

Overall, the Proteas have played New Zealand 61 times in ODIs and South Africa have recorded 36 victories while the Kiwis have 20 wins. Five matches were “no result”.

New Zealand have a slight edge in World Cup matches. In six appearances, they have won four times while the Proteas have two victories.

“We urge the South African public to rally behind the Proteas,” added Dr Jordaan.
