N West temporary teachers receive their monies

2590846120
The North West Education and Sport Development department has delivered on its promise of paying teachers yesterday, (Thursday) 23 April 2015.

The department has reported that payment of the temporary teachers has been divided into two trenches; the first trench was paid yesterday. The second trench will be paid on Tuesday 28 April 2015, due to the Monday public Holiday.

Out of total number of 1803 temporary educators, 1795 have been paid already. The remaining 107 temporary teachers are still to be paid. However, the figure keeps changing owing to new submissions by the unions and the districts and therefore payments will continue to run.

MEC for Education and Sport Development, Maphefo Matsemela highlighted that the delay in the payment of the temporary educators is caused by amongst others that other educators have transferred from other provinces and those provinces have not terminated them from their system. Their names appear as if they are still working for the department.

MEC Matsemela further said that some educators who are working in schools, they are working where there are no vacant posts and it is difficult to pay when there is no vacant post.

“Some educators submitted incomplete documents (they did not attach all the necessary information). In some instances it was found that educators’ certificates like that of South African Council of Educators (SACE) had expired and needed renewal”, Matsemela said.

The Collective Agreement 1 of 2010, states that a temporary educator will only be permanently employed if they have worked for a period of 24 months in the province.
