29 October 2025- A man (27) was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by the Kimberley Regional Court for murder.  This comes after the accused, Samkelo Blessing Komazi fatally stabbed Donovan Reed (24) on 22 December 2023.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Molefi Shemane said the police from Kimberley responded to a complaint about a fatal stabbing in Stockdale Street, Kimberley. Shemane said upon arrival, the police found a victim with a stabbing wound to the abdomen.

“The preliminary investigations revealed that an altercation had occurred between Reed and the accused, which resulted in the fatal stabbing. The accused was arrested shortly thereafter and charged with murder. He appeared in court several times before the conclusion of the trial and sentencing,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Frances Baard District Police Commissioner, Major General Charlotte Makgari, commended Detective Sergeant Kelaegile Mosala of the Kimberley Serious and Violent Crime Unit for her thorough investigative work, which ensured that the perpetrator was removed from society for a significant period. Makgari further welcomed the court’s ruling, declaring the accused unfit to possess a firearm.

“As the festive season approaches, the South African Police Service urges community members to remain vigilant and avoid situations that could lead to violent crime. The SAPS will continue implementing proactive policing measures to ensure that all citizens enjoy a safe and crime-free festive period,” she said.
