A Lesotho man nabbed for being in possession of dagga

1 August 2025- A Lesotho national (32) was arrested for possession of bankies of dagga and for failure to provide valid passport documentation. The suspect was arrested during Phase 2 of the high-density, disruptive Operation Basadi.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Lieutenant Colonel Sergio Kock was successfully conducted in Barkly West, Windsorton and Delportshoop. Kock said they showcased police visibility in these towns as they conducted foot and vehicle patrols in the Central Business Districts.

“The operation focused specifically on stop-and-search actions aimed at curbing drug-related crimes and addressing the illegal liquor outlets and the possession of dangerous weapons.

“Liquor outlets were also inspected for compliance with licensing regulations, particularly to prevent the sale of alcohol to underage persons,” he said.

Meanwhile, the operation was led by the Northern Cape Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing, Major General Johnny Besnaar led the operations. Besnaar said the teams visited Barkly West, Windsorton and Delportshoop in the Frances Baard District on 1 August 2025.

“Members from provincial units, local police stations, the K9 Unit and the Tactical Response Team joined forces in various crime prevention efforts, including roadblocks and stop-and-search operations.

“During a roadblock on the R31, police searched 132 vehicles and 191 individuals, issued two fines totalling R1300 and distributed educational pamphlets on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF), Extortion and contact crimes,” he said.

Besnaar further said simultaneously, the District Commissioners of Pixley Ka Seme, ZFM, JTG, Frances Baard and Namakwa Districts, executed similar operations in their respective areas. He added that female law enforcement officials together with their male counterparts will continue with crime combatting initiatives for the duration of August month.
