A man sentenced to seven years imprisonment for stealing a cellphone

10 February 2025- A man (23) was sentenced to seven years imprisonment by the Kimberley Regional Court. This follows after the accused, Allesandro Swanepoel, unlawful took of a cellphone by force from a victim in Millia Street, Roodepan on 14 March 2024.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Timothy Sam said on the said day, the victim was sitting outside his home when the accused, who was passingby, suddenly entered the victim’s yard, wielded a knife and took the victim’s cellphone and hastly ran out of the yard.

“The victim immediately informed the police as the suspect was known to him, and he was subsequently arrested. The accused was found guilty on a case of robbery and sentenced to seven years imprisonment, that will run concurrently with a 15 year sentence that he is currently serving on another matter,” he said.

Meanwhile, The Frances Baard District Commissioner, Major General Gabathata Makgari, praised the Investigating Officer, Detective Sergeant Mojalefa Setlai, for the meticulous investigation of the case and for ensuring that perpetrators of property crimes are brought to book.
