Two suspects aged 19 and 30, were arrested for being in possession of suspected stolen goods. This comes after a swift response by the police in Kakamas on Thursday.
The ZF Mgcawu District police spokesperson, Sergeant Omphile Masegela said the police recovered the items that were stolen during a burglary. She said a case of burglary was reported to the police and following that, the police received a tip-off regarding an alleged location, where the stolen items could be kept.
“They followed up on it and two suspects were found in possession of the stolen goods. The duo was arrested for possession of suspected stolen goods.
“Meanwhile, in another case, the police were informed by one of the residents in Kakamas that, an unknown person who came looking for accommodation, left the bags in the house which produced a strong smell and when they inspected, they found dagga.
“The police confiscated 12.05kg of dagga, which was booked in as found property. The police appreciated the integrity of the community members and encouraged society at large to stand against illegal activities by reporting all actions to the police,” said Masegela.

By STAFF REPORTER
More than 100 initiates were rescued from 17 initiation schools across the province. According to the North West MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA), Oageng Molapisi, his department, through the Provincial Initiation Coordinating Committee (PICC) and in collaboration with South African Police Service (SAPS), has successfully closed down these initiation schools.
“The shutting down of the schools follows the extensive oversight visits conducted by the PICC across the province, to clamp down on illegal initiation schools since the beginning of the 2024 winter initiation season in line with Section 15 of the Customary Initiation Act No 2 of 2021 (CIA).
“The committee was monitoring compliance in terms of Sections 20, 21, 23 and 24 of the CIA with, verifying the qualifications and credentials of initiation school practitioners i.e. principals, care-takers and traditional surgeons. They also inspected the facilities and resources to ensure they meet minimum standards as per Section 30 of the CIA,” he said.
Molapisi further said these operations have ensured the safety and health of numerous young initiates whom some were found to be in a dire condition. He added that the PICC has opened cases at various police stations and the school principals were arrested.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of PICC, Kgosi Godfrey Ramosetlho Gasebone, has expressed deepest concern over the non-compliance of the initiation school principals, which resulted in an increase of illegal schools and deaths of 2 initiates. Gasebone said the proliferation of illegal initiations is driven by money and greed by individuals who want to extort money from the parents of initiates.
“During our capacity building session which occurred in April 2024, the PICC has done its best to engage the school principals across the province about the new customary initiation law and to follow before establishing the initiations school. This was done in an effort to prevent the emergence of illegal initiation schools.
“We are happy that the school principals have been arrested and they will face the full might of the law. We will continue to work with the police to clamp down on these illegal acts and until everyone follows the dictates of the CIA,” he said.
Gasebone also condemned the recent attack of the PICC Deputy Chairperson Andries Stemmer’s son, an act of intimidation by those running illegal initiation schools. He said this incident occurred following a community tip-off about illegal initiation schools in Lichtenburg and Coligny, where 13 initiates were found.
“Other initiates were rescued from illegal schools Moretele, Motla, Makapanstad, Kromkuil, Klipgat, Kgabalatsane, Hebron, Letlhabile, Tigane, Goedgevonden, Mahikeng, Mareetsane, Coligny, Boikhutso, Makouspan and Madibogo, which were shut down. The rescued initiates were taken to neighbouring clinics and hospitals for further check-ups and assistance.
“No initiation school will exist without following the prescripts of the CIA, which amongst other included medical check-ups of initiates and acquiring consent from parents of initiates. What is happening is totally unacceptable. It is illegal and shows no regard for life,” said Gasebone.
He said they appeal to communities to help the department and PICC to stop these criminals, who abduct schoolboys and initiate them without the knowledge and consent of their parents. Gasebone said two deaths would have been avoidable.

The Directorate of Public Safety in the City of Matlosana together with Local Economic Development (LED) Directorate, Dr Kenneth Kaunda District (DKK) Environmental Department and other external stakeholders such as South African Police Service (SAPS) and Home Affairs, continued with the Clean-Up Campaign that was launched in May 2024.
The City of Matlosana spokesperson, Ntswaki Makgetha said the operation focuses on compliance of businesses within the Klerksdorp CBD on regulations and safety standards.
“During the compliance processes, City Mall was found not to be compliant, indicating a risk of the building. According to the Building Inspectors, the Mall building needed to be closed immediately as the contractor did not comply with the National Building Regulations Act.
Assistant Director of Fire and Rescue , Steven Mpato, confirmed that as per the Disaster Risk Management Act 57 of 2002 and the South African National Standard Act 10400, which reduces the risk of disaster, the City Mall is temporarily closed with immediate effect and everyone was expected to vacate the building,” she said.
Makgetha said the City of Matlosana will update the community as the investigation unfolds.

Monitoring processes at underperforming schools in North West revealed that there were fundamental protocols and educational strategies that were not followed adequately. These startling revelations were exposed during a meeting held at Seasons Conference Centre in Mahikeng on Friday.
North West MEC for Education, Viola Motsumi convened a meeting with principals and circuit managers from underperforming schools following the 2023 National Senior Certificate (NSC) results. Motsumi said as a result, the school management teams are now required to account for these deficiencies.
“Schools performing under 70% are subject to monitoring and assistance. Our province ensures that any schools that saw a decline in their average score below 70%, would be subject to appropriate monthly monitoring. With an increase of 1,8%, the province’s national matric results in 2023, placed it in fourth place with 81,6%.
“In this regard, the department works harder to guarantee that it strengthens its position by supporting every school in the province. To guarantee that all schools increase their performance and that no school decreases its performance, it will be necessary to expand the school-based intervention program this time around,” she said.
Motsumi further said this means that schools will receive support based on their unique set of conditions. She added that they have an enormous effort ahead of them and that they will not forsake the people of the province, especially learners.
“The monitoring of these underperforming schools will be conducted monthly to ensure continuous improvement and better year-end results,” said Motsumi.
Meanwhile, the North West Department of Education’s acting Superintendent- General, Maropene Seshibe, emphasized the importance of accountability and support. Seshibe said circuit managers need to account for the level of support they provide to these principals.
“The diagnostic reports will guide us in resolving these issues. Based on these findings, we will develop solutions to enhance overall learner performance. We do this because we are committed to reaching a top 2 position in the forthcoming results announcement.
“Therefore, we are implementing stringent measures to engage with underperforming schools,” she said.

The North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Wessels Morweng met with the provincial police management at his offices at Tirelo Building in Mmabatho on Friday. The police management includes all deputy and District Commissioners and the North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena.
Morweng said the meeting that was billed as introductory, turnout to be both productive and inventive. He further said key crime fighting aspects were discussed.
“The meeting was also attended by Provincial Chairperson of the Community Policing Forum (CPF), Robert Malungane and I will meet the CFP Board in due course. The CPF is demonstrating an unadulterated love for the country and they are an important stakeholder.
“We must exert state authority and we cannot recoil to the criminality. So, we must be on the ground to ensure that we restore public confidence on us. We cannot use conventional methods to solve complex challenges brought by crime,” he said.
Morweng further said they have to use technology to ensure that they succeed in this endeavour. He added that there is no problem without a solution.
Meanwhile, Kwena and Morweng embarked on a provincial picture of policing, including challenges and strategies the police have already implemented in dealing with crime.
