Brave Bafana shrug off travel challenges to share the spoils with Nigeria in tense away qualifier

By REGINALD KANYANE

Bafana Bafana shrugged off travel challenges to draw 1-1 with Nigeria during a pulsating 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday night.

It was a tense showdown between the two long-time foes, but Bafana Bafana coach, Hugo Broos’ charges rose to the challenge and took the fight to their West African hosts from the opening whistle. After one of their longest trips to Nigeria, spanning more than 30 hours, Bafana Bafana will feel they could have won the match.

The South African senior men’s national team were the first to get their name up on the stadium scoreboard after irrepressible midfielder, Themba Zwane opened the scoring in the 29th minute after a delicious pass from Yaya Sithole. Maestro Zwane was like an orchestra conductor interpreting composer Broos’ team sheet, and he executed the task at hand with his signature silky brush of the ball.

It was such a moment of inspiration from the visitors that the home fans were stunned into silence by the buildup, and by Zwane’s delectable final execution.

But the hosts equalised through Faruq Dele-Bashiru soon after the restart in the second half to put the Nigerians back in the game. The Bafana Bafana players put their bodies on the line to keep Nigeria at bay, and also try to find the goal that would have given the visitors a victory away from home.

Bafana Bafana goalie, Ronwen Williams pulled off stunning saves to ensure that the South African senior men’s national team will return home tomorrow with a point from Nigeria. It was a team effort, and all the players gave their all in Uyo.

Bafana Bafana face Zimbabwe in their next World Cup qualifier in a match that is to be played at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on 11 June 2024. Kickoff is at 6pm and tickets to this encounter are now available at the match venue, Free State stadium.

The gates will open at 3pm and the tickets are priced at R50 for adults. Kids, scholars and students will pay R20 (school uniform and student cards required for over 12-year-olds). Tickets are also available at TicketPro outlets, Spar, SuperSpar, Putco, Postnet etc.

Hospitality tickets are available from the stadium, and they are priced at R1500 and R2000 packages, including food and drinks.

Meanwhile, the Convenor of Moral Regeneration Movement (MRM), Pastor Lesiba Kgwele said: “As civil society led organization promoting the Charter of Positive Values and Ubuntu, we describe the incident that has sent shock waves across rural and urban communities as outrageous.

“We are extremely concerned at the level of intolerance and extreme violent behaviour that suggests possible bullying among the most vulnerable in our society who were collectively admitted at the facility to guarantee their safety and wellbeing.”

Kgwele added that peaceful co-existence was supposed to characterise the environment at the old age home.

“While we are confident that the law will take its course, we urge authorities to get to the bottom of the matter and ensure that counselling and psycho-social support services are offered to the rest of the residents at the old age home and staff.

It will be a day that will be filled with edge-of-your-seat horse racing action and a day where the whole family will be entertained. The Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge is one of the final chances to gain an entry, or a ‘golden ticket’, into South Africa’s richest race, the Hollywoodbets Durban July.

Hollywoodbets Brand and Communications Manager, Devin Heffer said with the stake for the Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge increasing by R500 000 to a whopping R2 million, it is one of the richest races in this year’s KZN Champion’s Season.

Heffer further said the day will be filled with horse racing action, while there will also be fun and entertainment for the family with various activities such as Kids Zone, Gin Garden and the famous Musgrave Market at the racecourse.

“There will also be music entertainment and entrance to Hollywoodbets Greyville will be free on the day. A few of the Hollywoodbets Brand Ambassadors will be present on the day.

“Some of these ambassadors include, former Bafana Bafana captain, Teko Modise, legendary Springbok rugby twins Akona and Odwa Ndungane, former Proteas cricketer Vernon Philander, Carol Tshabalala, Brian Baloyi, Robert Marawa and Jerry Sikhosana,” he said.

Heffer added that as a proudly South African sports giant with a global outlook, Hollywoodbets will be honouring and partnering with some of its partners, who are renowned locally and globally for their achievements.

He said these organisations include the Hollywoodbets Dolphins, East Coast Radio, LALIGA, Hollywoodbets Super League, Gagasi FM, Netball South Africa, SABC and the Hollywoodbets Sharks.

“With races named after our partners, the Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge offers a unique opportunity to showcase the exhilarating sport of horse racing to the business community and the general public as a superb form of entertainment.

“The Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge is the one race that passionate horse racing enthusiasts want to win due to the high-quality of horse racing that will be on display on the day. It is also an awesome precursor to the first Saturday of July, when the continent’s premier horse race, the Hollywoodbets Durban July, takes place.

“The Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge also gives us unique insights into how we can make the Hollywoodbets Durban July even more memorable. It will truly be an excellent day for everyone at Hollywoodbets Greyville, this Saturday,” said Heffer.

He said racing focus on the day will also be on South African champion jockey-elect, Richard Fourie who is just three wins away from breaking the record for the most wins in a South African horseracing season.

Heffer said the record is currently held by Hollywoodbets brand ambassador and Racing Manager Anthony Delpech, sits at 334 wins, and has stood for 25 years.

“The incentive for breaking the record is R1 million from the sponsors Hollywoodbets, and could happen on this big race day, with Fourie booked for nine rides.
