Illicit cigarettes worth over R3m confiscated

The police in the ZF Mgcawu District has confiscated illict cigarettes worth over R3 million. This comes after the members of Upington Border Police and K9 unit received a tip-off regarding the alleged sale of illicit cigarettes at one of the shops in Upington on 14 June 2024.

The ZF Mgcawu District police spokesperson, Sergeant Omphile Masegela said the police operationalised the information and visited the shop for inspection.

ā€œDuring inspection, they allegedly found cigarettes that were hidden in a storeroom at the back of the premises. The owner could, however, not provide invoices for the cigarettes and 153 master-cases cigarettes to the value of R3 901 500 were seized.

ā€œAn inquiry has been registered for further investigation,ā€ said Masegela.
