A patient sentenced to four years imprisonment for raping a girl at mental hospital

A patient (22) was sentenced to four years imprisonment by the Kimberley Regional Court for rape. On 4 February 2023, the victim (12) went to the bathroom after having supper at a mental hospital in Kimberley.

The Northern Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Molefi Shemane said the accused grabbed the victim patient and pushed her inside the bathroom, locked the door and raped her.

“The victim informed the hospital management, who notified the police. The accused was arrested and bail was successfully denied.

“Detective Sergeant Neo Noge of the Kimberley, Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) led the investigation and secured the conviction of the perpetrator,” said Shemane.

He further said accused was convicted and sentenced to four years imprisonment. Shemane added that the court also declared him unfit to work with children and his name is to be entered in the National Child Protection Register.
