The Secretary to Parliament, Mr Xolile George, will receive the list of designated Members of the National Assembly (NA) from the Chief Justice at an official handover ceremony at the Constitutional Court on 6 June 2024.
The National Assembly spokesperson, Moloto Mothapo said it is an established practice in South Africa that after the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) announces the results of the National and Provincial elections, the IEC hands over the lists of members designated to be sworn in by the NA during its first sitting.
“In line with this practice, Chief Justice Raymond Zondo will 6 June 2024, officially receive from the Chairperson of the IEC the lists of designated members of the NA and the provincial legislatures.
“The Chief Justice will hand over the NA list to the Secretary to Parliament in preparation for the first sitting of the NA and hand over the lists of members designated to the nine provincial legislatures to the designated Judges President who will preside over the first sitting of the respective legislatures,” he said.
Mothapo further said the Judge President will transmit the lists to the secretaries to the nine provincial legislatures to assist them with preparations for their first sittings. He added that the process of constituting the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) differs from that of the NA as the NCOP remains competent until immediately before the first sitting of the provincial legislatures.
“The list of new members to be delegated to the NCOP will be determined at the first sitting of each provincial legislature – with each of the nine provinces eligible to delegate 10 members (six permanent and four special delegates) to the NCOP.
“The first sitting of the legislatures will be scheduled on the same day as the first sitting of the NA. The first sitting of the NCOP is expected to be a day after the first sitting of the NA,” said Mothapo.
The handover will take place at the Constitutional Court in Braamfontein on 6 June 2024.
