Banyana Banyana played to a 1-1 draw with Senegal in the first of two international friendly matches at Stade Lat Dior in Thies, Senegal on Saturday night. In what was a very physical match, the South African Senior Women’s National Team dominated possession in the first half, but failed to make use of it.
Banyana Banyana coach, Desiree Ellis made a decisive substitution in the beginning of the second half as Sinoxolo Cesane made way for Kholoso Biyana. Ellis’ decision assisted in getting the team a bit more forward.
“Karabo Dhlamini picked up an injury and was forced to come off in the 65th minute. We had to make a double substitution as Dhlamini and Motlhalo made way for Asanda Hadebe and Nonhlanhla Mthandi.
“A great combination played in the 67th minute saw Nthabiseng Majiya score the opening goal for South Africa. The Senegalese played long balls, but could not find a way past the visitors’ rear-guard as goalkeeper Kaylan Swart and her defenders had them covered,” she said.
She further said she then brought on Nicole Michael for Nthabiseng Majiya in the 75th minute. Ellis added that Thubelihle Shamase and Lesego Nkoane, came in the 84th for Amogelang Motau and Sibulele Holweni.
“Senegal got a penalty in the last minute of the match after a scrabble clearance by South Africa in the box and the home side equalized to earn a share of the spoils. I believe we dominated the match but failed to take our chances.
“We knew that Senegal would play the long ball, so we were prepared for what they gave. We managed to give more players some game time and as time goes by, they will understand what we want from them as we continue to prepare for the WAFCON,” she said.
Meanwhile, Senegal will host the South Africans in the second international friendly on 4 June 2024 at the same Stade Lat Dior venue.
