Two offenders were sentenced to 12 months imprisonment by the Victoria West Magistrate’s Court for stock theft. According to the Northern Cape police spokesperson, Timothy Sam, on 7 August 2023, Jason Bostander (23) and Shawn Oliphant (22) together with an accomplice were spotted by a local communal farmer, busy slaughtering a sheep valued at about R2 000.

Sam said the farmer informed the police. He further said the court sentenced the duo to 12 months imprisonment and withdrew the case against the accomplice.

“Both offenders were declared unfit to possess a firearm. In an unrelated case, on 23 October 2023, three accused, Zavier van Wyk (23), Willem Jooste (23) and Romano Charlie (26), were seen by the public slaughtering a goat valued at approximately R1 800 behind a local supermarket.

“The witnesses informed the police. Van Wyk, Jooste and Charlie were sentenced to 12, 24 and 36 months direct imprisonment respectively for stock theft and were all declared unfit to possess a firearm,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Northern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, appreciated the community efforts for informing the police and commended Detective Sergeant Winston Julies for the thorough investigation and securing convictions.

“The police are encouraging the public to rate the police efforts in fighting crime by participating in the “RATE OUR SERVICE” online survey to assist the police in improving services,” she said.
