A man has been sentenced to 13 years by the Kuruman Regional Court for raping a woman (18). According to the Northern Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Timothy Sam, the atrocity took place at Maruping village, near Kuruman on 21 August 2021.
“The accused, Oupa Petrus Moremi (27) gained entry into the victim’s house, threatened her with a knife, and sexually assaulted her. After the assault, the victim managed to escape and alerted the police.
The police tracked and arrested Moremi. The investigating officer, Detective Constable Kentse Mokgosi from the Kuruman Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) is commended for the thorough investigative work,” said Sam.
Meanwhile, the Northern Cape Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, welcomed the sentence. Otola further said, the detectives will remain relentless in ensuring that justice is served for victims of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF).
