Boyfriend “slit” his girlfriend’s throat

A man (29) has been arrested for allegedly killing his girlfriend. Lucky Thabiso Akompe was arrested on 25 December 2023 after he allegedly slit the throat of his girlfriend, Lerato Francina Kuate (20). The incident happened at Goedehoop village, near Madikwe during the early hours of Monday morning, 25 December 2023.

The North West police spokesperson, Captain Sam Tselanyane said it is alleged that, the police were called to the scene after the deceased’s body was found in a shack belonging to the accused’s relative. Tselanyane said upon arrival at the scene, police were shown the deceased’s body, which was lying in a pool of blood.

“The Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) were summoned and Kuate was certified dead at the scene. The preliminary investigations led the police to the house, where the suspect was residing, but he was not found.

“During the search at the house, police found the blood stained clothes that the accused was seen wearing the previous day hidden underneath a bed. A search for the suspect was immediately launched and later in the afternoon, Akompe handed himself over to the Mabeskraal police and was detained,” he said.

Tselanyane further said Akompe was remanded in custody until 4 January 2024. He added that, the accused is set to consult with the new legal representative and investigation into the matter continues.

Meanwhile, the North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena has condemned in the strongest possible terms this barbaric act of criminality to a defenceless woman. Kwena conveyed his deepest condolences to the deceased’s family and said, the police will do everything in their power to ensure that justice is served.

More than 1250 suspects arrested during Operation Shanela

More than 1250 suspects have been arrested by the police during Operation Shanela. According to the North West police spokesperson, Captain Sam Tselanyane, the police were working together with other law enforcement agencies to clamp down any criminal activity.

Tselanyane further said they wanted to ensure that, the community and visitors in the province were safe and protected during festive season.

“The suspects were arrested amongst others for rape, murder, assault Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH), malicious damage to property, burglary residential and business premises, theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle, theft out of / from motor vehicle and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“Of the 1 250 suspects, 399 were wanted for contact crimes like murder, attempted murder, rape, assault with intent to do GBH, assault common, house robbery and business robbery. Furthermore, 169 suspected undocumented persons were taken in for processing,” he said.

Tselanyane added that, the arrests were effected through execution of several actions, which included stop and searches, road blocks, vehicle check points, visiting and inspecting of licensed liquor premises, Second-hand goods dealers, tracing of wanted suspects and many others.

He said the operation also resulted in the confiscation of mandrax tablets, Crystal Meth, five dangerous weapons, six handguns, one rifle, three rounds of ammunition, cellular phone, liquor and copper cables.

“Fifty two suspects were also arrested during illegal mining Operation “Vala Umgodi” between 18 December and 24 December 2023. The suspects were nabbed during disruptive operations in Stilfontein and Witrandjie in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda and Bojanala Platinum Districts.

“The suspects include 18 Lesotho, 8 Mozambique, 2 Malawi and 2 Bangladesh nationals as well as 16 South Africans. During the arrest, the police seized gold bearing material, petrol, generator, a truck, spade and two cell phones,” said Tselanyane.

Meanwhile, the North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, congratulated the police for the sterling work and dedication that, they have shown throughout the festive season operations to keep the province safe and secure.

Bafana Bafana coach announces squad for the Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire

Bafana Bafana coach, Hugo Broos has announced his final squad for next year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.

Broos selected 23 players and put another three on standby, saying this is the personnel that will do battle in the West African country against the continent’s best national teams.

“If we do not go past the group stages, we will not be happy and that is for sure. I think that has to be the first goal. You know, going past the group stages is one of the most difficult things to do in the tournament.

“It is like that because you are playing against three opponents that are 100% motivated and they also want to go past those group stage,” he said.

Broos’ charges will assemble for camp on 4 January 2024 and then travel to Stellenbosch for a training camp that will be held in the Western Cape city until 9 January 2024.

Bafana Bafana will then play a training match against Lesotho behind closed doors at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville before departing for Côte d’Ivoire on 11 January 2024.
