Two suspects were arrested for being in possession of counterfeit currency in Upington. During the search, the police discovered counterfeit bank notes amounting to R1 864 200 in rands and $2900.00 in US Dollars (R55 100.00).
Northern Cape police spokesperson in ZF Mgcawu District, Sergeant Omphile Masegela said the police arrested a man (55) and a woman (24). Masegela said they are expected to appear in court soon.
“The police received a tip-off regarding the alleged counterfeit currency kept at a flat in Upington on 11 December 2023. They immediately operationalised the information and searched the premises. The businesses and the public are urged to familiarise themselves with the new bank notes.
“Any information regarding counterfeit bank notes can be reported anonymously at the nearest police station or via SAPS toll free number 08600 10111 or on MySAPS App. All information will be treated with strictest confidentiality,” he said.
Meanwhile, the ZF Mgcawu District Commissioner, Maj Gen Thabo Mphuthi, commended the police for their prompt action and securing the arrests.
