A man accused of double murder was remanded in custody. Paul Prinsloo (61) briefly appeared before the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday for the alleged domestic violence-related double murder of his wife, Catherina Magdalena Prinsloo (58) and step-daughter, Ruzanne Weideman (31).
The North West police spokesperson, Col Adele Myburgh said Prinsloo was remanded in custody until 6 December 2023 for formal bail application. Myburgh said the atrocity took place in Kosmos, outside Hartbeespoort Dam on 27 November 2023.
“It is alleged that Prinsloo was involved in an argument with his wife and step-daughter. He then took a hunting rifle and allegedly shot both women who were declared dead on the scene by Emergency Medical and Rescue Services (EMRS).
“Prinsloo was arrested on the scene shortly after the incident. The motive of the incident is yet to be determined,” she said.
Meanwhile, the North West Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena said he is appalled by the incident, which occurred at the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism For No Violence Against Women and Children. Kwena said what is worrisome is that the incident also took place at the victims’ own home, where they were supposed to feel safe.
“The crimes were regrettably perpetrated by someone who was supposed to be their protector. We urge the public to work together with the police and various stakeholders to accelerate actions to end Gender Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF),” he said.
