Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Infrastructure at the Greater Taung Local Municipality (GTLM), Itumeleng Maribe said they are working around the clock to ensure that, the challenges of sewage spillage in Pudimoe Township, near Taung have been addressed.

This comes after a former ANC councillor, Lopang Tokwe, and others complained to Newzroom Afrika TV channel that, the sewage spillage overflowed into the river in Matlapaneng village, near Taung and that affected their livestock. According to Tokwe, they are experiencing high levels of livestock mortality due to sewage spillage flowing into the river.

“We have reported the matter to the Greater Taung Local Municipality (GTLM) and other departments responsible but nothing has changed. It’s been over 10 years since we have been experiencing this and when we slaughter our animals, you will see that they have been drinking from a sewerage.

“Most of them have a pot-bellied appearance and we have written numerous letters to the municipality for intervention without any response. We even called the department responsible to come and conduct tests,” he said.

Tokwe further said, they were surprised when they were told that the water sample results will be handed over to the municipality. He added that they have tried in vain to gain access to the results to no avail.

The local tribal authority representative, Tshepo Gasekoma shared the same sentiments. Gasekoma said they need a permanent solution to the problem.

“It’s been long since we have been experiencing this. We wrote several letters to the municipality and reported this on every public platform. We even went as far as going to the Office of the Greater Taung Local Municipality (GTLM) mayor, Tumisang Gaoraelwe but nothing has happened until today.

“They have never responded but said this is not their competency. They said it is the responsibility of Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality, but as the tribal authority, we know nothing about that. What we want is a permanent solution because those who are affected are ordinary citizens,” he said.

Gasekoma said the residents go to their office to complain about the ongoing sewage spillage that overflows into the river. He said they even sent Tokwe to the Dr Ruth Segomotsi District Municipality, however, the response was not satisfactory.

“They keep on saying they are busy appointing the contractor. We urge the municipality to come to us and show us the tangible evidence that indeed, they have appointed a contractor to fix this mess. Again, we have not received the outcome of the testing conducted here,” said Gasekoma.

Meanwhile, Maribe said: On behalf of the Greater Taung Local Municipality, indeed I can confirm that, there is a technical challenge with the main sewage pipe regardless, we are responsible for maintenance.

“We have gone an extra mile and ensured that we raise the main hole so that it will be able to flow better. This cost the municipality not less than R150 000 for material and labour. Regardless, this is the responsibility of Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality.

“We can also confirm that we bought chemicals in trying to contain the environmental challenges. Just to add on that, the District Municipality has made a commitment to attend to the challenges on 22 August 2023,” he said.

Maribe said basically, they are working in collaboration with Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District Municipality and made an assessment to come up with a long-term solution.

90 000 hectares destroyed by enraged veld fires in Kagisano Molopo

Picture: Veld fires gutted Kagisano Molopo area/Generic

By OBAKENG MAJE

The chairperson of North West Provincial Legislature (NWPL) Portfolio Committee on Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Agriculture and Rural Development, Bitsa Lenkopane said she has learned with great concern about the devastating persistence of veld fires that have burned down over 90 000 hectares of grazing land in the Kagisano Molopo area.

Lenkopane said the areas affected by veld fires include PLAS farms, LRAD farms, and Communal land. She further said the information at the disposal of the committee indicates that these fires started on the night of 16 August 2023 and are to be contained.

“This is a serious drawback as the province is expected to contribute positively towards the eradication of NDP triple challenges of poverty, unemployment, and inequalities within the province and ensure that, food security and nutrition programs contribute towards agrarian transformation.

“The wildfires started when a committee is in the process of amending the National Veld and Fire Act, 1998, as the public Hearing will be held on 22 August 2023. Since the cause of fires is unknown, the committee is of the view that this is the right time to acknowledge that climate change is upon us,” she said.

Lenkopane further said, that climate change is the greatest challenge to modern human civilization with large impacts on socio-economic, environmental, mining, and development-related sectors, including water resources, agriculture and food security, human health, ecosystems, and biodiversity.

Lenkopane is appealing to the North West Provincial Government (NWPG) to move with speed in containing veld fires as this will result in an increased loss of agricultural produce, and a reduced availability of food for both humans and animals. She added that, this will also contribute to the reduced growth rate of vegetation and threatening livelihoods.

“Most importantly, the committee pleads with the government and Civil Society to assist farmers with grass and food for livestock because most farmers in use grass to feed their livestock which has been affected by fire. Additionally, the Department of Agriculture must consider climate-smart indicators that will result in reviewing farming methods (i.e. Change of crops, review of planting season, review of the livestock) and Climate-smart agricultural practices applied by farmers throughout the province.

“Furthermore, we call on community members to stop littering, especially near farms as most of the bottle when getting too much heat has the potential of creating a spark that could turn into fire. Surrounding communities are encouraged to support farmers and firefighters to put the fire under control,” said Lenkopane.

She said as a way forward, the committee will during the legislature oversight week of 29 August -1 September 2023, invite the Department of Rural Development and Land Reformed, Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, and, District Municipality to present on their coherent broader plan on veld fire awareness and long-term veld fire preventative measures.

Lenkopane said they are also expected to present their research study on the cause of veld fires and its findings.

By OBAKENG MAJE

A 43-YEAR-OLD man has been sentenced to 24 months imprisonment to pay an R25 000 fine by the Zeerust Magistrate’s Court on Friday. Nyoni Mambunganye was found guilty of contravening Customs & Excise Act 91 of 1964 by failing to declare goods upon entering the Republic.

The accused was arrested on 01 August 2023 at the Kopfontein Border Post after he had allegedly lied to SARS Customs officials that the truck he was driving was not carrying cargo. Upon searching the truck, officials allegedly found master cases of cigarettes concealed in hidden compartments.

The Hawks spokesperson in North West, Lieutenant Colonel Tinyiko Mathebula said after entering into a plea agreement with the State when he appeared in court, Mambunganye was found guilty and sentenced to R25 000 fine or 24 months imprisonment.

Meanwhile, Trevor Oosthuizen (50), Virginia Motshabi (50), and Ernest Langa (54) were on Thursday, sentenced to five years wholly suspended sentence by the Mmabatho Magistrate’s Court, after they were found guilty of unlawful dealing in and trafficking in wildlife. Mathebula further said the accused were given a wholly suspended sentence on condition that they pay R40 000 each to the Johannesburg Wildlife Hospital.

“In April 2022, the accused along with the fourth accused, who has absconded after being granted bail, were arrested at Mahikeng Mall after they were caught in possession of a pangolin. They were arrested soon after trying to sell the pangolin to a buyer for the value of R250 000.

“The accused made a series of court appearances until their conviction and sentencing. A warrant of arrest has since been issued against the fourth accused who is still at large,” he added.

Meanwhile, The Provincial Head for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Major General Patrick Mbotho, and the Director of Public Prosecutions in the North West, Dr Rachel Makhari lauded the investigation and prosecution team for their collaboration and resultant convictions. South Africa ready to work with China toward a shared future

Picture: RSA president, Cyril Ramaphosa/Google

By CYRIL RAMAPHOSA

This year marks 25 years of diplomatic ties between South Africa and the People’s Republic of China. Our bilateral relationship with our largest trading partner is almost as old as our democracy. On Tuesday we will receive Chinese President Xi Jinping on his fourth state visit to South Africa. President Xi will also participate in the 15th BRICS Summit being hosted in Johannesburg.

In addition to a number of structured bilateral mechanisms, South Africa and China collaborate on international strategic platforms such as the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation or FOCAC, BRICS, the G20, the G77 plus China alliance, and others.

Relations between the two countries is underpinned by a 10-Year Strategic Programme of Cooperation (2020-2029). President Xi’s visit is an opportunity to assess progress in the areas of cooperation and identify ways of deepening collaboration.

Energy cooperation between South Africa and China is a focus area that holds great promise. In June this year companies from both countries participated in a New Energy Investment and Cooperation Conference, which looked at opportunities for collaboration in the green economy, the just energy transition and on the transfer of science and technology.

There are already around 200 Chinese companies operating in this area in South Africa.

South Africa has a great deal to learn from China’s development path. Among other achievements, China has lifted nearly 800 million people out of poverty over a 40 year period. According to World Bank data, through this China has contributed close to three quarters of the global reduction in the number of people living in extreme poverty.

As partners in development, China and South Africa have long shared a common understanding that trade and investment are the foremost catalysts for improving the living standards of our respective peoples.

South Africa is eager to deepen its collaboration within the frameworks of China’s common prosperity doctrine and strategy and our own National Development Plan and Economic Reconstruction and Development Plan. South Africa is also keen to harness the developmental potential of China’s Belt and Road Initiative announced by President Xi in 2013.

We are actively collaborating on the design and implementation of poverty alleviation strategies aligned with our respective developmental visions, as well as on women and youth empowerment.

As South Africa we want to address the trade deficit between South Africa and China.

Bilateral trade with China has grown exponentially, from less than R1 billion in 1998 to over R614 billion in 2022. We hope to use this state visit to discuss how to narrow the significant trade deficit that exists in China’s favour, mainly through facilitating greater entry of value-added South African goods, products and services into the Chinese market.

Tourism promotion is another area of cooperation. With the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, China is an important source for tourism. It is significant that the number of visitors from China in June 2023 was four times higher than the same time last year.

South African Tourism expects that inbound Chinese tourism will recover to pre-COVID levels by 2026. We will be actively promoting our country as a tourism destination for Chinese tourists at the China International Import Expo, China-Africa Economic and Trade Expo and others. It is encouraging that direct flights between South Africa and China are increasing.

In 2025, South Africa will assume the presidency of the G20 group of countries, and we are encouraged by China’s support for our presidency. Our collaboration with China in international affairs and on multilateral platforms is underpinned by a commitment to the transformation of global governance institutions to make them more inclusive and to give more developing economy countries a voice.

We are encouraged by China’s ongoing commitment to supporting African countries to meet the aspirations contained in the African Union’s Agenda 2063, and to the success of the African Continental Free Trade Area.

As we mark this significant milestone in South Africa-China relations, our country stands ready to work closely with the government and people of China towards a shared future of meaningful and mutual benefit.
