The North West High Court sitting in Vryburg has postponed a murder case against two men, who are accused of killing a prominent businesswoman and funeral parlour owner, Kgomotso Serei. Joel Tumo Phathudi (44) and Lebogang Serei (46), who was the stepson of the deceased, were found guilty of murder and were supposed to be sentenced today.
However, the matter could not continue due to load shedding. The case was postponed until 26 April 2023.
The stepson and three other men were arrested in Rooiwal village, near Taung on 14 and 15 June 2017 respectively in connection with the murder of Kgomotso. However, two other men, Zwelinzima Mohapi (26) and Olebogeng Mgijima (31) were released due to lack of evidence.
In the evidence, it was revealed that Lebogang was the mastermind behind the murder. It is alleged that, he was unhappy after his late father listed the late Kgomotso who resided in Cokonyane village as the beneficiary in a will. During the cross-examination, both accused persons requested the court not to sentence them to life imprisonment as they have other responsibilities.
