A bus ferrying 20 learners from Letsatsing Secondary School in Mahikeng exploded while ferrying learners. The incident took place at Unit 9 in Mmabatho near Mahikeng on Saturday. According to the North West MEC for education, Wendy Matsemela, learners were from the winter camp classes, which were held at Mosikare Secondary School in Mantsha village.
“The bus was dropping off learners around Mmabatho Township when it exploded. We are grateful that, there were no injuries reported. The purpose of the winter camps is primarily to improve the performance of our learners.
“We wish to call upon all our bus operators to be extremely vigilant whenever they are transporting learners. They should ensure that their buses are roadworthy and they comply with the rules of the road,” Matsemela said.
She further said the department has arranged counselling for all those affected.
