By BAKANG MOKOTO

A 39-year-old man is expected to appear at Zeerust Magistrate’s Court in Zeerust for ‘negligence handling’ of a firearm.

North West Community Safety and Transport Management spokesperson, Alpheus Koonyaditse said the man was arrested after he allegedly disrupted a meeting between the department and taxi drivers on Sunday.

“The man continuously disrupted the meeting. Initially, he refuted allegations that he had a firearm with him. It was later found out that he had the licensed 9mm firearm, and one magazine.

“He was arrested immediately for negligence handling and will appear at the Zeerust court on Monday. The meeting was to intervene between taxi operators travelling between Zeerust and Roodepoort in Gauteng,” Koonyaditse said.

He added that the meeting went well and ended amicably albeit regrettable incident of one of them being arrested.

Molelema family needs a wheelchair for their son!

Picture: Patricia Sesoko (53) with her grandson, Tshiamo (5)

By KEDIBONE MOLAETSI

The Sesoko family at Molelema village in Taung was left dejected after the North West Social Development department allegedly failed them. Patricia Sesoko (53) said they are in need of a ‘special wheelchair’ for their grandson, Tshiamo (5) who is suffering from cerebral palsy.

“My grandson was born with cerebral palsy and he needs a special wheelchair. Tshiamo’s condition has not improved since his birth and it is difficult for us. No one is working in the house, so we survive with Tshiamo’s disability grant.

“The clinic is too far and it is difficult for me to take him to the clinic when the needs arise. I have three children and we urge any Good Samaritan for assistance. We’ve requested assistance from the government, however, our plea fell in deaf ears,” Sesoko said.

According to Sesoko, she was forced to go and borrow her father’s wheelchair which is not designed to ferry cerebral palsy patients when taking Tshiamo to the clinic.

A local social activist, Mothibi Makoro said: “We believe that our government should ensure that it caters for the deprived. It is so devastating to see Sesoko family living in this dire condition, while we have government officials sitting comfortably in air-conditioned offices.

“However, I do not blame the ANC-led government for these shenanigans, but public servants. We urge our government to ensure that our people receive basic services such as electricity, water, and sanitation. The family had no electricity in their home and we had to fight for them to get it. Tshiamo is using the device that needs electricity and imagine living without it.”

However, the North West Social Development spokesperson, Petrus Siko said the department has been in contact with the family. Siko further said the ward social worker has also visited the family several times since April this year.

“The ward social worker has compiled a home circumstance report that outlines the needs of the family. Based on the home circumstance report, the social worker has linked the family of the boy with the local municipality to provide them with electricity because the device that the boy is using requires electricity.

“I can confirm that the electricity has been installed with the support of the ward social worker. The boy has been referred to the Taung hospital to undergo physiotherapy. The social worker has also requested the hospital to put the boy’s name on the waiting list of those who are awaiting wheelchairs,” said Siko.

He added that Tshiamo is currently receiving a child support grant from SASSA too. Siko said communities are urged to use ward social workers’ services or visit the nearest service point of the department.

“Furthermore, the department has a school social worker programme which addresses the needs of the learners within the school premises,” he said.

Gina Jansheski, M.D. who is a Board Certified Pediatrician and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics said: “Cerebral palsy (CP) is a neurological condition caused by brain damage and it is the most common motor and movement disability of childhood.

Cerebral palsy causes a range of disabilities, from mild to severe.”

Anyone who would like to assist the family can contact Patricia Sesoko on 0737198770

Political parties scramble for votes at Mamusa

By KEDIBONE MOLAETSI

Service delivery continues to be a challenge at Mamusa Local Municipality. The municipality is still under pressure after the North West Provincial government put it under Section 100 (c) citing lack of service delivery, maladministration, and corruption.

Now political parties are preparing for the by-elections on 15 January 2020 to elect a new council. The North West Provincial government embarked on a service delivery blitz a month ago at the embattled municipality in an attempt to bring services closer to the people.

However, the Democratic Alliance (DA) leader in the North West, Joe McGluwa accused the ANC of being desperate to secure votes in the upcoming by-elections and resorted to ‘window-dressing’ service delivery.

McGluwa said: “The ANC-led provincial government has been in Mamusa over the last couple of months to hand out token title deeds, promising that the rest will be handed over soon. A blatant lie and behind the scenes, the ANC national government is hell-bent on expropriating property without compensation, so it is quite possible that the title deeds handed out will be taken back should the ANC continue with its plan of expropriation.

“Earlier in the year when we campaigned in Mamusa before the 8 May elections, we conducted extensive oversight inspections across the municipality. At the municipal dumping site, we found the entire area operating outside of legislation.”

McGluwa said they have conducted an oversight inspection and the situation has deteriorated. He added that people of Mamusa could do with some basic services such as a proper water management plan, clean drinking water, and sewage free streets and communities.

“Smoke, mirrors and the abuse of state resources to try and swindle votes out of a desperate community will not do the ANC any good. The ANC has governed Mamusa since the dawn of democracy and is completely responsible for the collapse in governance, non-existent service delivery and the socio-economic misery that the people of Mamusa has to endure.

“The alarm bells signaling the collapse of Mamusa under the ANC have been ringing for more than seven years. Since the 2012/13 financial year, the Auditor-General could not ascertain the financial health of the municipality and issuing disclaimer audit opinions.

Marred by internal factionalism, ANC cadres have been fighting each other to secure power through the state to continue the unabated looting and abuse of power we have seen in Mamusa,” said McGluwa.

However, the spokesperson for ANC interim structure in the North West, Kenny Morolong extended the party’s appreciation and congratulated the people of Mamusa for the successful nomination of their preferred ANC councillor candidates.

“These community meetings reaffirm the ANC as a mass-based organization that is rooted amongst our communities. We are confident that this process will produce credible candidates who will serve our people with honour and humility. We encourage our community members to participate in the remainder of our community meetings.

The ANC in the North West calls upon the residents of Mamusa to exercise their hard-won democratic right and register to vote in the upcoming by-elections in their municipal area. Those who are already registered as voters are called upon to visit their respective voting stations and check their names in the voters roll,” Morolong said.

A boy drowns while swimming with friends

By KEDIBONE MOLAETSI

A 10 year-old boy drowned at Koekemoer Spruit canal in Khuma Township, Stilfontein on Saturday.

The North West police spokesperson, Brig Sabata Mokgwabone said a case of inquest was opened after Simphiwe Tshabalala who was swimming with his friends drowned.

Mokgwabone said it is alleged that Tshabalala was playing with his friends at Malekutu Bridge in Khuma Township near Stilfontein when they decided to swim.

“He allegedly disappeared under the strong current of the water and police divers were summoned to the scene. The search was conducted, but was temporarily stopped in the evening.

“The search was re-convened this morning and the lifeless body of Tshabalala was discovered at around 10am more than a kilometre from where he allegedly drowned,” he said.

Meanwhile, the North West Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena expressed his concern about incidents of drowning especially of young children.

This comes after five other children aged between three and 17 drowned in Pudimoe, Bojating village, Amalia and Ganyesa between 30 December 2019 and Saturday, 4 January 2020.

Kwena said in one of the incidents in Ganyesa, it is alleged that two boys aged 16 and 17 drowned on Friday after they went swimming in a pond close to Ganyesa hospital.

“We advised all parents to ensure that their children are safe at all times, especially after the heavy rains experienced in the province.

“The public is advised to take heed and apply safety tips before engaging in swimming activities,” Kwena said.
