Mechanic, Vusani Maja says VW lights have a street value of between R17 000 to R24 000.

Volkswagen (VW) drivers are urged to stay alert as the latest trend of headlights and bumpers being stripped off Polo’s and other models has hit Polokwane.
This, after Tebogo Shai’s vehicle and five other vehicles had the front lights and bumpers removed at a local hotspot on 1 December. Shai told BONUS she left the venue at around 01:30 and went back to her vehicle that was parked in Jorrissen Street, just before the corner of Biccard Street, when she noticed none of the car guards there.
“At first, I thought someone had bumped into my vehicle and fled the scene. Upon closer inspection, I noticed there was no trace of a bumper bash and that someone had intentionally removed parts from my vehicle. I immediately thought of all the posts I had seen on social media about VW lights being stolen in Pretoria.
Shai said she looked for the three car guards who were present when she arrived, but none were around. Shai’s vehicle is currently at a local panel beater, waiting for damage evaluation. Mechanic, Vusani Maja says VW lights have a street value of between R17 000 to R24 000. “It is a growing trend but this is the first I’ve heard of it in Polokwane. People are desperate for money, wherever they see an opportunity they will take it to make a quick buck.” Maja advised motorists to ensure they park their vehicles in safe locations where they will not be easily tampered with.
“The material of a Polo makes it fairly easy to remove the lights but if they struggle, they will most probably take the bumper with, as in Shai’s case,” he said. Shai has since opened a case. Polokwane Police Station’s Spokesperson, Warrant Officer, Lesiba Ramoshaba confirmed they are investigating a case of theft from a motor vehicle. “No one has been arrested yet, the investigation still continues. We are not used to receiving cases of this nature but victims can direct queries to Sgt Shai at 0833689468. Please report any suspicious people or motor vehicles moving around your area,” he said.
