Banyana Banyana nominated for Team of the Year at SA Sports Awards

Football - 2018 Cosafa Womens Championship - Final - Cameroon v South Africa - Wolfson Stadium - Port Elizabeth

Things just keep getting better for the Sasol-sponsored team, Banyana Banyana. Desiree Ellis-led team has been nominated for the Team of the Year Award in the upcoming annual South African Sports Awards. They will be battling it out with the Rugby Sevens Team as well as the Super Rugby side Lions.

Minister of Sport and Recreation, Thokozile Xasa made the announcement on Friday in Johannesburg. The reigning 2017 CAF Team of the Year has qualified for the Africa Women Cup of Nations that will take place in Ghana.

Banyana Banyana coach, Desiree Ellis said: “I think this is just amazing for Banyana Banyana and for women’s football in general. The nomination comes as a huge surprise, but we welcome it. We have had a fantastic year so far – qualifying for the 2018 AFCON and retaining the COSAFA Women’s Championship title is not mean feat, mind you, we are still the reigning 2017 CAF Women’s Team of the Year.

“We are pitted against very strong and worthy candidates – the Rugby Sevens Team and the Lions Super 15 side – both did well in their respective disciplines, hence the nomination. But just being nominated is a great achievement on its own as it speaks volumes of the year Banyana Banyana has had. We are so blessed and grateful for the support of SAFA and our proud sponsor Sasol, not forgetting all the coaches and players in the Sasol League.”

Ellis said while winning the award would mean a lot, the bigger picture is the mission ahead. The squad goes into camp on Sunday to start preparations for AFCON, which will be used as the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifier for the African zone – the top three nations will book their spots in France.

In Ghana, South Africa will be up against the hosts, Algeria, Cameroon, Kenya, Mali, Nigeria and Zambia.

“We would love to win the award, without a shadow of doubt, but for us the focus is on task at hand. I have said this over and over again that we have never won the AFCON and we believe now is our time, failing which we must be one of the top three sides that will play in the World Cup in France – and the latter is not negotiable, we have to qualify for the World Cup,” added Ellis.

Already qualified for the World Cup are France (hosts), Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China Peoples Republic, England, Germany, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Norway, Scotland, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Thailand and the USA.

Since the start of the year, Banyana Banyana have played 14 matches – winning eight, drawing three and losing the other three (Sweden, Belgium, Chile).

The first game was against Sweden in January, followed by the Cyprus Women’s Cup in March, where they reached their highest finish in the tournament by ending 6thwith a loss to Belgium.

Next up was the 2018 AFCON qualifier against Lesotho in June, winning 1-0 away, and 6-1 at home to book their place in the 8-Nation tournament in Ghana.

In September, they continued where they left off by defending their COSAFA Women’s Championship title in Port Elizabeth – winning all their five matches with victories over Madagascar (2-1), Botswana (1-0), Malawi (6-0), Uganda (2-0) and Cameroon (2-1) in the final.

They scored 13 goals and conceded just two – one from the penalty spot.

Banyana Banyana has just recently returned from a tour of Chile, South America.

Despite losing 2-1 and drawing 2-2 against the host nation, they gave a good account of themselves as they were preparing for AFCON.

Municipality takes the North West Provincial government to court

Picture: North West Premier, Prof Job Mokgoro

By REGINALD KANYANE

The Kagisano-Molopo Local Municipality is expected to file an interdiction against the North West Provincial government after the municipality was put under administration.

The municipal mayor, Tumelo Olaotswe said the provincial government did not follow proper processes to put the municipality under administration.

“We will be filing an interdiction at the North West High Court in Mahikeng on Monday. We do not interdict the decision to put our municipality under administration, but the process that was followed.

“There was no proper consultation and we know that our municipality summed-up well compared to those municipalities that we also put under administration. The truth need to be told and during 2016/17 financial year, our municipality received unqualified audit report while in 2017/18 we received qualified audit report during 2017/18 financial year,” he said.

However, the North West Premier, Professor Job Mokgoro said: “The Exco has received a detailed report from the Local Government and Human Settlement department. The report provided a diagnosis on the state of municipalities in the province.

“The Exco resolved that all 22 municipalities required constant monitoring and support and to this end. We agreed that the report on assessment and support will be a standing point to all municipalities.”

He further said the Exco has resolved that Section 139 (1b) and Section 137 MFMA interventions in the eight identified municipalities was evoked with effect from September 1.

Mokgoro added that those identified municipalities were Kagisano-Molopo, Ramotshere-Moiloa, Ditsobotla, Kgetlhengrivier, Makwassi Hills, Ngaka Modiri Molema, Naledi and Mahikeng Local Municipality.

Political analyst from the North West University in Potchefstroom campus, Professor Andre Duvenhage said: “I think we need to look at the history of the North West province. There is always a political agenda when it comes to article 139 (a) or (b) of the constitution.

“I think that was misused by the previous administration under Supra Mahumapelo stewardship to gain a political control and access to the resources.”

Duvenhage said that he believes in Mokgoro’s judgement and the decision to put the municipality under administration might be fruitful.

Gupta-linked public enterprises DG Richard Seleke quits

Richard Seleke. Image: DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC ENTERPRISES

The embattled Gupta-linked public enterprises director-general Richard Seleke is finally leaving the public service after reaching a settlement on his exit.

This brings to an end a deadlock between Seleke and his employer. He had, over two months ago, accepted a R3-million settlement but refused to sign on the dotted line unless a condition preventing him from working for government until 2020 was scrapped. He vowed at the time to challenge this in the labour court.

The public enterprises department announced this week that Seleke‚ who was suspended by minister Pravin Gordhan in March‚ was officially vacating his position following a settlement reached with President Cyril Ramaphosa’s office as well as the department.

It was not clear whether Seleke’s exit meant he had accepted a revised settlement offer or the initial one with a cooling-off period. Attempts to get hold of him were unsuccessful.

His departure‚ according to the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) is not the end of it for Seleke‚ who was implicated in the leaked Gupta emails.

The anti-corruption activist group said it was “preparing a detailed submission on the outgoing public enterprise director-general Richard Seleke’s relationship with Gupta family to be handed to the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture”.

Gordhan is known to have suspended Seleke over his alleged links with the Guptas.

Serious allegations against Seleke are contained in an affidavit by Outa chief operations officer‚ Ben Theron‚ who alleged that the then director-general leaked inside business information of state-owned enterprises to the Guptas and thus helped them secure major contracts with Eskom and Transnet. Theron further alleged in the affidavit that:

• Seleke had an unlawful and improper relationship with the Gupta family since at least the start of 2015.

• He used an anonymous email address (infoportal1@zoho.com) from which he conducted Gupta-related business under the pseudonym “Businessman”.

• Seleke’s CV was emailed to former president Jacob Zuma’s son‚ Duduzane‚ who is a Gupta business associate‚ before his appointment as director-general in December 2015.

Outa welcomed Seleke’s departure but promised to “continue to pursue its charges of fraud‚ corruption and treason against him.

“We welcome the news of Seleke’s removal from office which is the result of a settlement stemming from investigations into his involvement with the Gupta family. However‚ this does not mean we will back down from our criminal complaint and our legal team will continue to apply pressure on the Hawks and NPA to investigate and take this matter to court‚” said Outa’s portfolio manager‚ Rudie Heyneke.

Nene is lying, says EFF

Xoli Mngambi/eNCA

JOHANNESBURG – The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) on Wednesday dismissed Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene’s testimony at the state capture commission of inquiryas lies.

The party said Nene never replied to its inquiry about his relationship with the controversial Gupta family.

”The EFF raised the matter in the Standing Committee on Finance [in Parliament] that the minister is failing to respond to important correspondence. The committee then resolved that the minister must respond withing 10 working days. He still ignored the committee and did not bother to respond. On the 10th of June 2018, we wrote a text message to the minister making a follow up on the correspondence, he simply ignored the text message and continues with business as usual.”

The EFF said it then submitted questions to Nene for written replies in Parliament, but instead Nene ”continued with his arrogance” and undermined Parliament’s processes.

The red berets accused Nene of facilitating the Guptas access to funding at the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) when he was deputy finance minister and chairman of PIC. The red berets charged that Nene ”played victim” after he was fired by former president Jacob Zuma in 2015 as he had broken ranks with the Guptas and stopped taking their phone calls. The fighters had demanded that Nene resign immediately after his testimony at the inquiry on Wednesday.

The minister testified that the EFF allegations against him were baseless and not true. He added that the EFF’s statement on Tuesday that he never replied to their letter was incorrect, because he responded on June 12 this year.

The EFF was having none of it.

”Today, after his misleading submission, we wrote to him asking him for a copy of his response [to the EFF], his office’s response was that the minister is considering our response. Even for such a simple letter, the minister could not resend or furnish us with his response to show that he is not lying,” the EFF said.

”The EFF demand that the minister furnish us with the letter that he claims he wrote to us, and provide us with written responses to questions in Parliament.”
