North West MEC of Public Works and Roads department, Mmule Maluleke will meet with Molelema community today at 11am to address the road issue. Community in Baga-Maidi embarked on protests demanding the tar roads on D209 and D208 gravel roads respectively.
Shops were looted, children were prohibited to go to school, while community hall was torched. According to community leader, George Tong, the department committed itself to construct both roads on the 1st of April 2018.
“We submitted our memorandum to the department and they promised to revamp those roads. However, they have back-tracked on their promises and said they do not have enough budget,” Tong said.
The department spokesperson, Tsholofelo Mathibedi said: “MEC Mmule Maluleke will meet with Baga-Maidi community on Thursday to address their grievances. I believe that we will find a common ground in resolving this matter.”
Meanwhile
, nine people were arrested for public violence amid protests. They are expected to appear at Taung Magistrate’s Court today.
