Poverty: SA’s 30 million poor need a new beginning

BY MMUSI MAIMANE

Of all the sad things we’ve learnt this year, surely the saddest news came on Tuesday, when Pali Lehohla, our Statistician General, told us that absolute poverty is on the rise in South Africa, and that our children are suffering more than any other group. This is our clearest call to action yet. Each passing day, more South Africans slip into poverty, more children fall into deprivation. It is time for a new beginning and that new beginning can’t come soon enough.

More than half of our country lives in poverty. One in four South Africans cannot afford to feed themselves adequately, let alone any other necessities. StatsSA’s Poverty Trends in South Africa report reveals that between 2011 and 2015, the proportion of people living in poverty (below the poverty line of R1138 per person per month in 2017 prices) increased from 53.2% to 55.5%, equating to 30.4 million people. Of these, 13.8 million people (up from 11 million in 2011) live in extreme poverty (below the food poverty line of R531 per person per month), lacking adequate nutrition.

And of course, the burden of poverty is almost entirely borne by black people, courtesy of our deeply unjust apartheid past and the failings of a callous, corrupt ANC government.

Shockingly, 67% – two in three – of South Africa’s children live in poverty – a much higher proportion than for any other age group. Over 13 million children, almost all of them black, are growing up in poverty, their early childhood development compromised and their life chances stunted. Millions of children go to sleep on an empty stomach and sleep badly as a result; they go to school on an empty stomach and perform badly as a result. Some 15 000 children per year are admitted to hospital for severe acute malnutrition, of whom around 1 500 die from it. South Africa will never flourish while so many of our children are caught in this cruel poverty trap.

We must never, ever accept poverty as normal. Absolute poverty must always be absolutely unacceptable.

Tackling and eliminating poverty must be our top priority as a nation, the yardstick by which we measure our success.  The DA in national government will take a two-pronged “protect and empower” approach. We will give as much protection as possible to those who remain in poverty, while moving as quickly as possible to provide the opportunities that empower people to lift themselves out of poverty.

A strong social safety net is a social and moral imperative, but the fact is that in SA, the key driver of poverty is large-scale unemployment. There are more people receiving social grants (17 million) than people with jobs (16 million) in SA. Clearly, the only sustainable solution to the challenge of poverty, is to bring poor people into the economy en masse, through inclusive, job-creating economic growth.

In national government, we will be relentless in seeking to grow income-generating opportunities and to improve poor people’s access to these opportunities. Over and above its capacity to empower the poor, a thriving economy also provides the revenue that funds greater social protection. Without a thriving economy, our welfare system itself is at risk.

How will we grow an inclusive, thriving economy? By growing people’s capacity for economic activity through improving access to quality education and healthcare. By de-concentrating our economy and supporting small, medium and micro enterprises. By investing in rural development and giving people title to the land they live on. By providing the infrastructure that connects people to each other and opportunities – broadband internet, transport networks; and that underpins all economic activity – water and energy infrastructure. By ensuring that state-owned enterprises are a benefit rather than a cost to the public.

But undoubtedly, the single most important requirement for a thriving South African economy is political will: a state that is genuinely committed to the wellbeing of the many rather than the enrichment of the few; a state that is committed to democratic accountability; a state that inspires confidence through coherent and stable policy; a state that understands that inclusive economic growth and true broad-based economic empowerment are mutually reinforcing; leaders who seek to unite rather than divide and who are genuinely committed to righting the wrongs of the past; leaders with a social consciousness so that they do not squander resources that should go to the poor. I am confident that the DA will lead a state such as this; that we will unite the nation and work hard, together, to rapidly reduce poverty and build the bright future that every single one of our children deserves.

Vaaltar FM suspends two ‘drunken’ presenters

Picture: Community members handing over memorandum to Vaaltar FM Board of Directors chairperson, Tsholofelo Moepeng

 BY REGINALD KANYANE

THE embattled Taung Community Radio Station, Vaaltar FM allegedly suspended two presenters who fought on air recently. The makeshift Station Manager, Kgakololo Mothei could not shed more light on the matter.

Mothei said the day-to-day business of the station is handled by Board of Directors  Chairperson, Tsholofelo Moepeng which is strange for any reputable organisation.

The “parasitic bourgeoisie” Moepeng said he cannot comment on the matter. He accused Taung DailyNews to have a personal vendetta against the station. Antagonistic chairperson said this before he hung up: “We cannot comment on the matter because I believe that the newspaper has a personal vendetta against me.

“It is clear that the newspaper wants to wage a war against me. However, I am ready to defend myself and I will do everything in my power. So, I will not comment further on the matter.”

Two presenters, Otsile Phetlhu and Tshepang Seelo were allegedly fighting for booze at Taung Mall few minutes before they took their fight ‘on air’. The newsreader, Dimpho Mohosh who was a stand-in presenter at the time, was heard screaming live on air after two ‘drunkards’ entered the studio.

The station suspended them after they appeared before disciplinary hearing. Vaaltar FM management also suspended news reporter, Omphemetse Montsho but made a U-turn after Taung DailyNews enquired about the matter.

Tshepang Seelo said: “I have not been expelled thus far. I met with the management and I’ll take it from there.”

Vaaltar FM is not new to controversy as the station once clutched the headlines for firing nine presenters at once back in 2015. The presenters confronted the then Station Manager, Ganetsang Sebele and the Board of Directors chairperson, Tsholofelo Moepeng demanding the station’s bank statements and financial records. Phenyo “PC” Kujane, Motshidisi Letlhogela, Tumelo “The Big & Tall” Mogolegeng, Agisanang Scuff, Judge Baardman, Jane Nku, Kenewang Phepheng, Olebogeng Molale, Thato “Dj Notorius” Keolatotse, Lesego Molelekwa (Receptionist) and the late Moalosi Lepholletse were all fired.

Vaaltar FM allegedly received R350 000 from Greater Taung Local Municipality for their Talk shows where the municipality will engage with the community talking about the issues affecting them.

The municipality bought a slot for Mondays and Thursdays between 18:00- 19:00. Fired presenters accused the station management of defrauding the station more than R350 000.

“We were fired because we demanded the bank statement and the financial records. We believe that there are discrepancies because the management could not prove how they’ve spent the money. Transparency is needed, but the management see it differently” one presenter said.

Moepeng said (then) that they dismissed nine presenters because they allegedly disrupted the smooth-running of the business. He said that presenters were not fired over money swindling allegations.

“Those presenters were expelled after they disturbed the smooth-running of the programmes. It is not true that they were expelled for demanding financial records of the station. They were expelled for disrupting the normal broadcasting intentionally.

“Furthermore, I do not have any knowledge regarding financial discrepancy. The major concern to my understanding with relation to R350 000 was on how it was spent,” Moepeng said.

Most of presenters who spoke to us anonymously said Moepeng and his deputy, Omphemetse Leshobo were the parasite cymothoa exigua, or tongue-eating louse, and Vaaltar FM its host, a fish.

The correlation explains that the parasite enters the fish through the gills, settles on its tongue and sucks its blood until the tongue atrophies and falls off. It then becomes the fish’s tongue and the two need one another to survive.

Pooks FC wins Manokwane tournament

BY BAKANG MOKOTO

MANOKWANE Annual Soccer Tournament addresses socio-economic challenges across Taung. The Olehile Sport Club organisation secretary, Tlotlego Mokgalagadi said this sporting cliché sums up an attitude towards sport that is increasingly common around the area.

“The aim of this annual tournament is to ensure that we develop emerging players. Soccer has become such a major factor in everyday life. We have Top 8 soccer tournament, Top 4 Women Basketball and Netball tournaments. This annual event takes place every August. Sport enhances a person’s selfdiscipline, hardiness and selfsacrifice.

“Sport is often seen as a trivial aspect of life by academics. We have established the event back in 2012 and it has been running consecutively. The initiative also contributes to economic growth as many Small Micro Medium Enterprises (SMMEs) owners come over and trade their craft. People in Taung and its neighbourhoods flock to a two day event,” Mokgalagadi said.

He added that even though there are many challenges like lack of sponsorship, they will find their niche soon. Mokgalagadi urged all stakeholders to come on board and invest in the initiative.

“Sport has become so pervasive in Taung society. This is also a platform for local players to showcase their aptitudes. We invite scouts and more devoted players find their break-through during the event. We have eight participating teams in soccer and the winning team scoops R10 000. The finalist gets R4 000 and joining fee is R1000.

“In Basketball, we only have four participating teams. We have women teams thus far and same applies to netball. The winner scoops R5 500 in both basketball and netball. The finalists get R1500 each. Sport is imperative as it strengthen your mind and also ensure that you live healthy lifestyle,” he said.

The organisation has also structured similar games in December. Lokaleng village-based team, Pooks Football Club won the soccer tournament after walloping Manthe village team, Mighty Boys 5-4 after penalties.

Mokgalagadi applauded all teams that performed at the tournament. He further said Taung has abundance of talent that need to be exposed.

“We have seen artistic performance from various teams. Even though Taung is predominantly rural, we have faith that one day we will make our mark in the world of football. Sport can create or support nation building and generates sportsmanship.

“It can also support nation building by providing Infrastructure for the economy. We have seen it before where sport was used to bring tranquillity in various countries. Sport speaks all languages and brings people of different races, cultures and ethnics from all over the world together,” he concludes.

Seoding man kills wife, hangs self

141211police-tape-jpg.jpg

BY BAKANG MOKOTO

A MAN allegedly killed his wife and hanged himself afterwards in Seoding village, near Pampierstad. The atrocity took place on Wednesday, Northern Cape police spokesperson, Captain Sergio Kock says.

Kock refused to shed more light on the matter and said: “Police are investigating a murder and inquest following the discovery of two bodies in a house in Seoding village, near Pampierstad. The circumstances surrounding the incidents are not yet known but are under investigation. Anyone with information can call D/Capt Busang Tshamboko on 0824438640.”

The man originated from Pampierstad, while his wife came from Mokassa 1 in Taung.

Women killings hackles South African headlines since early this year. A 25 year-old woman and her boyfriend were found dead at their residential area at Mokassa 2 near Taung last year. Koketso Mochwanetsi and her boyfriend, Michael Boye, 21, were allegedly involved in a brawl that led to the killing.

Mochwanetsi was found in a pool of blood with stabbing wounds in her throat.  South African Civic Organisation (SANCO) in Dr Ruth Mompati region condemned the incident and called it senseless. Regional Secretary, Mika Moeti said people should visit relevant institutions to get help in their relationships.

“We want to condemn the incident and urge our society to ask for help. We cannot continue to live like this. What kind of society are we raising? If there are challenges in relationships, there are counsels and psychologists who could help to overcome the challenges.

“Resorting to killing must never be an issue. Many children are left without parents because of our selfishness. We also want to encourage our people to visit police stations to report the abusive relationships,” Mika said.

‘Taung singer ready to break into showbiz’

Picture: Taung-born singer, Boitshepo Lethuane aka #Nadiacal

BY REGINALD KANYANE

It is not easy to become a model especially coming from far-flung areas like Taung. However, Boitshepo Lethuane said she is adamant to make her mark in dog-eat-dog industry.

“I am a singer, a song writer and a model. I know it is difficult to break into the entertainment industry. However, my talent and creativity will come in handy. I have released more than ten singles so far and that speaks volume. Any singer with potential can achieve her dream.

“I’ve worked with various local artists and embarked on charitable duties across Taung. I am currently doing Grade 12 at Mankuroane Technical School in Taung. However, I will further my studies next year hopefully at University of Johannesburg,” Lethuane said.

#Nadiacal as Lethuane is affectionately known in music fraternity, believe that women have what it takes to compete in male dominated industry. She further said rapping is a calling, while entertainment industry is her playground.

“I am an entertainer and I fell in love with showbiz since tender age. I would like to further my studies next year and study Communication Science. Even though many parents believe that modelling, singing and acting cannot be chosen as career, my grandmother understand.

“Things have changed for the better since the dawn of democracy. We need to explore those opportunities and ensure that we make our mark. I also want to encourage young girls not to be dependable. I believe that we also need to be given equal opportunities like our male counterparts,” she said.

#Nadiacal said she was inspired by Mahikeng-born first lady of Motswako, Refilwe ‘Fifi Cooper’ Mooketsi. She further said music talks about real issues that affect the society.

“Through music we can address many concerns that affect the youth especially in rural areas. Our people continue to live in abject poverty and they have lost hope. We need to work together as a society and ensure that we change the lives of the masses for the better.

“The youth also need to stand up and be counted. We cannot continue to rely on government for our survival. The government has brought many opportunities and let us take advantage of that,” Nadiacal said.

She added that staying with her grandmother was the best thing ever happened to her. Nadiacal said parents need to open up and talk to their children about daily challenges.

“My mother is working in Vryburg, while my dad is in Mahikeng. However, we communicate often. I stay with my granny who I share everything with. We see young children indulging in drugs, alcohol and substance abuse.

“Parents need to ensure that they monitor their children and talk to them. I also want to wish Grade 12s at Mankuroane Technical School all the best. With discipline, dedication and determination we can do it,” she said.

Miss Teen Universe representative, Phemelo Mhlanga said: “It is not easy to become a model because the craft needs discipline, dedication and determination. The modelling career prepares you as a person to achieve your goals. It is not like in olden days where one cannot make a career out of it. There is abundance of opportunities in the industry and I’ll advice parents not to prevent their children to embark on it,” Mhlanga said.

He also calls on all those who want to be models to join his organisation. Mhlanga said people should have knowledge, passion and love for the art.

“Having the right attitude will go a long way to ensure you get noticed by the right people. We have magazines, fashion, and advertising agencies looking for models. So, models should not limit themselves and need to explore all avenues. If one want to embark on the field, joining professional modelling agents is imperative.

“The modelling agencies are very good at what they do and will be able to see your potential even if you think you do not have any. So, if you really want to be a model and you do not think you can, the point is to try anyway. You might find that an agency will be able to turn you into one of the best models,” he said.

Manthe murder case postponed

Picture: Baitshepi Monchwe (deceased)

BY KEDIBONE MOLAETSI

MURDER Case against a man from Manthe village in Taung was postponed until 5 September 2017.  Lucky Aiseng, 29, briefly appeared at Taung Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday after he allegedly killed his girlfriend, Baitshepi Monchwe, 28, a week ago.

Taung Police Station cluster spokesperson, Sergeant Tebogo Thebe said the atrocity was caused by a domestic dispute.

“The suspect and the victim are both from Manthe village, near Taung and they were in a relationship,” Thebe said.

It is alleged that Aiseng bludgeoned Monchwe at his residential area. The deceased’s auntie, Kgomotso Monchwe said the incident left them dejected.

“I saw my sister (Baitshepi’s mother crying and I went to check on her. She was crying uncontrollably and could not say a word.

“We went to Malaza’s bedroom (as Luckyboy Aiseng is affectionately known in the area) and found Baitshepi’s body in pool of blood. She was bleeding from her mouth and with a fatal wound under her right armpit,” Kgomotso Monchwe said.

The suspect and the victim have two children together.

Taung Community against Crime representative, Bakang Mankuroane said: “We want to condemn what happened in Manthe village. We also want to emphasise that women should speak out against any form of abuse.

“As the organisation, we believe that the fight against women and children abuse is a societal issue. We urge men to take a stand and ensure that women are protected.”

African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) provincial secretary, Bridgette Mogakwe shared the same sentiments. Mogakwe said justice should take its course.

“We believe that perpetrator must face the law. Killing women must be condemned in all forms. We urge all community members to fight against domestic violence, femicide and women and children abuse,” she said.
