Mining charter crowd ‘paid’ R100 each to disrupt Zwane’s meeting

Footage has surfaced to show that a group of people who disrupted last week’s imbizo addressed by Mineral Resources Minister Mosebenzi Zwane on the mining charter may have been paid R100 to cause the raucous.

Television channel ANN7 is in possession of pictures which shows money exchanging hands  among a group of people who attended last weeks imbizo and ended up disrupting it.

Zwane was prevented by the rowdy crowd from addressing the imbizo held in Middleburg, Mpumalanga.

A group of disgruntled community members did not want Zwane to address them because Mpumalanga Premier David Mabuza was not present at the imbizo.

Zwane later expressed that what happened in Mpumalanga would not deter scheduled mining charter imbizos.

“If people think that the premier should be here, then we will come back. We will engage the premier and pass the message that people want him present at the imbizo,” he said.

MESSAGE of condolences continue to pour in for former Botswana’s late president, Sir Ketumile Masire who died on Thursday last week. Botswana vice president, Mokgweetsi Masisi and president, Ian Khama paid homage to Masire.

He passed on last week Thursday after undergoing a surgery at a private hospital in Gaborone, Botswana.

Masire’s body is lying in state at the country’s parliament, and Batswana are paying their respects.

“Masire’s contribution to the struggle for stability of the region cannot go unnoticed. He offered refuge to many freedom fighters in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region during his tenure as president, and his country was sometimes attacked by apartheid South Africa, where scores of people were killed, including Batswana,” Masisi said.

North West Premier, Supra Mahumapelo will also attend Masire’s funeral.

Mahumapelo has described Masire as one of the greatest and humble leaders Botswana has ever had.

“We convey our heartfelt condolences to the Masire family and the people of Botswana for the loss of this great yet humble leader who contributed significantly to the progress that Botswana enjoys today. I salute Sir Ketumile  Masire for his visionary leadership during his tenure as President of Botswana,” Mahumapelo said.

Masire will be buried at his home village in Kanye on Thursday.
