Mabudafhasi to launch Library Week in Rustenburg

Rejoice-Mabudafhasi

BY BAKANG MOKOTO

THE Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture, Rejoice Mabudafhasi in partnership with the National Library of South Africa (NLSA) and the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) will launch the South African Library Week at Sunrise View Primary and Secondary Schools in Rustenburg on Friday.

Mabudafhasi said the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA) will celebrate South African Library Week (SALW) from 18-26 March 2017 with the theme “My Library, Your Library“ and sub-themes: “My Library, My Home”, “Mind your Library” and “Tell me about your Library”.

“The theme, “My Library, Your library” takes libraries into the heart of the community and strives to awaken a sense of ownership in each community member. The theme encourages people to take libraries to heart and to treat these as their homes so that destroying libraries and burning books becomes unthinkable.

“The theme is a reminder to all library users that the library is a communal space that caters to specific needs whether these are educational, social, recreational or informative. Prior to the launch of the SALW, we will officially open Papi Ntjana Community Library on Thursday as part of the build-up to Library Week campaign,” she said.

Mabudafhasi further said LIASA remains aligned with the South Africa’s National Development Plan (NDP) for 2030. She said that will shape communities through skills development in an attempt to reduce unemployment especially amongst the youth as well as the expansion of the job market with knowledgeable workers and through entrepreneurship.

“While the NDP/Vision 2030 sees education as a road to national economic prosperity, the current outlook is gloomy. A report released in November 2016 placed South African grade 7 science and mathematics competencies at the bottom of global rankings of 57 countries. Libraries have positioned themselves in this space between aspiration and delivery providing support for education.

“It needs the community to recognize this key advantage and to take up further the opportunities this brings. Let us make reading part of our daily lives and let everyone of us share a book with a colleague, family, friends and neighbours as a way of enhancing social cohesion. Together, let us turn South Africa into a reading nation.

She added that they will use the knowledge acquired through reading to strive towards a better and literate South Africa. Mabudafhasi said the LIASA is the national professional association that represents libraries and information institutions.

“All library and information workers, millions potential users of libraries in South Africa need to unite, develop and empower all people in the library and information field.  It represents the interests of and promotes the development and image of library and information services in South Africa,” Mabudafhasi said.

Amajita lose out on bronze medal

The South African National u20 Men’s National team (Amajita) went down 2-1 to Guinea in the CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations 3rd and 4th place play-off on Sunday afternoon to lose out on a bronze medal.

Having achieved their first mandate of reaching the FIFA u20 World Cup in South Korea in May, coach Thabo Senong fielded fringe players in this encounter but despite gaining greater possession throughout the match, Amajita’s backline problems resurfaced again.

First, they conceded an own goal from a very innocuous situation and then when both teams had resigned to a penalty shootout, captain Tercious Malepe conceded a penalty when he handled in the box to consign South Africa to fourth place finish.

Liam Jordan opened the scoring for South Africa in the 5th minute after a great through ball was played to him by Sipho Mbule. However, Guinea found themselves on equal terms just two minutes later when Katlego Mohamme scored an own goal when he headed past goalkeeper Sanele Tshabalala. His looping header gave Tshabalala no chance.

Amajita had numerous chances to go ahead again but spurned several chances, something they were going to leave to regret.

Guinea were forced to make a substitution at the beginning of the second half after Daouda Camara was forced to come out due to injury, he was replaced by Naby Bangoura.

The second half saw both sides create scoring opportunities but goalkeepers Tshabalala and Moussa Camara stood out with their world class saves.

Coach Thabo Senong made two changes with Luther Singh coming on for Itumenelg Shopane in the 53rd minute and Sibongakonke Mbatha in the 60th minute.

But it was Guinea substitute Naby Bangoura who had the final say when he scored from the penalty spot.

“This has been a great tournament and I am very happy that all the players got a chance to play. Guinea is a good team and we had chances, especially in the first half where we could have at least had two goals and seal the match.

“Unfortunately we conceded an own goal and the penalty which are part of bizarre things we always try to avoid in the game of football,” said Senong.

Bafana Bafana squad to face Guinea-Bissau and Angola announced

bafana

Stand-in Bafana Bafana head coach Owen da Gama has announced a 25-man squad to play against Guinea-Bissau and Angola in back-to-back friendly international matches.

In the first fixture, South Africa will take on African Wild Dogs (Guinea-Bissau) on Saturday, 25 March 2017 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.

Kickoff is at 15h00.

Bafana Bafana will then face the Palacas Negras (Angola) in the second fixture which will be played on Tuesday, 28 March 2017 at a venue to be confirmed.

Da Gama has named three debutants, Lorenzo Gordinho (Kaizer Chiefs), Phakamani Mahlambi (Bidvest Wits) and Luther Singh (SC Braga, Portugal).

There is also a recall for Kamohelo Mokotjo (FC Twente, Netherlands) and Kermit Erasmus (Lens, France), while goalkeepers Shuaib Walters (Cape Town City) and Darren Keet (Bidvest Wits) and striker Lebohang Manyama (Cape Town City) also make a return after a long absence.

“It is important to give as many players a chance as possible. The national team hasn’t been active since November in 2016 – that’s a six month break – so our mission is to prepare a team that will tackle the upcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup and 2019 AFCON qualfiers. We want to assemble the best possible squad and create a healthy, competitive spirit within the team,” said Da Gama.

“I have been put in charge for these two games, and we will give as many players a run so that come the qualifers we are not found wanting.”

Mahlambi and Singh are key players in the South African u20 Men’s National Team (Amajita). They have been rewarded for their great performances for both club and country.

The duo was instumental in helping Amajita qualify for the 2017 FIFA u20 World Cup that will be played in South Korea in May.

“Vision 2022 is all about having a team ready for the future, and that is why we have mixed experience with youth. It is crucial that we bring in these youngsters as early as now so they can have the experience needed when the time comes. We will monitor them during the camp and see how they cope and will take it from there, but there is a likelyhood that they could feature in one of the matches because we want to see what they can offer when taken to a higher level. For far too long we have always waited for players be 25 and want to introduce them to the senior national team, but that has to change now – we need to expose the vast array of talent we have in our country,” added Da Gama.

Bafana Bafana assemble for camp on Sunday, 19 March in Johannesburg before travelling the next day (Monday, 20 March) to Durban.

South Africa and Guinea-Bissau have never met before, but Bafana Bafana have played 12 times agaisnt Angola.

Bafana Bafana has won eight of those encounters, drew three and lost just once.
The hosts are 62nd on the FIFA World Rankings, and 13th on the continent, while Guinea-Bissau and Angola are 80th and 19th as well as 148th and 45th respectively.

FEED department observes World Consumer Rights Day

BY BAKANG MOKOTO

North West Finance, Economy and Enterprise Development (FEED) department will be celebrating World Consumer Rights Day by having an interactive session with consumers under the theme “Consumer in the digital era” at White Hall, in Brits.

MEC for FEED, Wendy Nelson said prior to this, there will be various activities to promote and protect the rights of the consumers against unscrupulous business practices relating to the digital transactions which includes ATM fraud, misleading on line advertising and trading.

“This is an international theme proposed by Consumer International and the department have received a number of complaints in relation to digital transactions.

“Most of the consumers indicated that they have lost money through online shopping and the investigations shows that this is as a result of adequate knowledge on the pros and cons of the sales associated with on line trading,” she said.

Nelson said some consumers were not aware of customs related duties as suppliers might be outside the country.
“Consumers will be afforded an opportunity to interact with various regulatory bodies which include National Credit Regulator (NCR), National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS), Department of Home Affairs and the North West Liquor Authority.

“This session will be preceded by massive joint road shows in Brits and surrounding areas in which consumers will be reminded on their rights and responsibilities,” she said.

Nelson further said by facilitating such programmes, the department intends to ensure that the rights of consumers are protected and respected and also to address social injustices which undermine them through advocacy,” she said.

Nelson further said that it is the duty of the government to ensure that consumers do not get a raw deal and also that business people need to value their customers’ worth in the economic cycle.

“As government, we need to strengthen the economy by creating a conducive environment for both our businesses and consumers. It is clear that this will be a path to Rebranding, Renewal and Healing of our province.

“Government employees, Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), Community Development Workers (CDWs), Pensioners and Community members at large are invited to come and get information about issues that affect them on daily basis,” she said.

Mahumapelo warns of scam targeting unemployed youth

The unemployed youth in the Rustenburg and Mahikeng areas are urged to avoid falling victim to a scam led by a young lady who claims to have been appointed by the Office of the Premier through its Youth Entrepreneurship Services unit and the provincial department of Education and Sport Development to collect Curricula Vitae (CVs) of unemployed youth, who will purportedly be linked with the mines for training and skills development.

The lady, whose identity is known to Office of the Premier, and a team of her accomplice, target unsuspecting job seeking youth who are expected to each pay twenty-rand (R20.00) for submission of their CVs.

The scam was exposed by the Ledig village traditional authority outside Rustenburg and the local councilors, who were also initially made to believe that the scammer was consistently in touch with and updating Premier Supra Mahumapelo of progress made in collecting the CVs.

“We are not only concerned about misrepresentation of the image of the provincial government and in particular Office of the Premier, but we are mostly disturbed by the extent to which the name of Premier Mahumapelo is being misused in scamming the victims, and taking advantage of the vulnerable youth in our villages by creating false hopes”, said Brian Setswambung, the provincial spokesperson, adding that the provincial government vehemently distances itself from the work of this scam.

“The provincial government will under no circumstances appoint service providers who in the cause of delivering the work appointed to do, will solicit money from members of the public, employed or not employed, rich or poor. We urge all to not fall prey to scammers. When in doubt, contact the 24 hours toll-free Setsokotsane Operation Centre on 0800 111 700, and seek information and guidance”, advised Setswambung.

The Office of the Premier is currently investigating the operations of this scam, as it is viewed as a criminal case.
