Amajimbos and China play to a draw in BRICS u17 Football Cup

The South African u17 Men’s National Team, Amajimbos, was held to a goalless draw by a determined China side in the BRICS u17 Football Cup, which was played on Sunday, 9 October 2016 at the Bambolin Stadium in Goa,
India.

It was a must-win for China who had already lost two games, while South Africa was playing their second match.

It was a dull affair in the first half as both teams were struggling under the heat and humidity of Goa – added to that China was playing their third match in five days and it showed, as they were slow off the blocks.

South Africa should have taken advantage of the situation, but instead it was China who came close in the 22nd minute when the ball was passed behind the Amajimbos defence who were left for dead by the China forwards but they shot wide.

Amajimbos managed to score three minutes later but one player was adjudged to have used his hand to steer the ball into the back of the net.

However both teams came out guns blazing in the second stanza as it had started to cool off, and the game came back to life.

Amajimbos enjoyed a lot of possession, and created numerous chances, which they failed to convert.

First Lyle Foster was clear on goals but could only shoot wide in the 65th minute.

A minute later South Africa started a move from the back, threw in a cross from the left and Foster tried an acrobatic but it went narrowly wide.

In the 70th minute S’miso Bophela was a gifted a golden opportunity when a back pass landed in his way, but with the goalkeeper to beat he ballooned his shot.

Second half substitute, Tyreese Pillay almost scored a spectacular goal but could only watch in agony in the 76th minute as his ball beat the keeper but not the upright and ricocheted back into play.

There was still time for another chance in the 88th minute when Sthembiso Kurata, who replaced Sabelo Radebe, almost had his name on the score sheet. After a neat one-two in the opposition box, Kurata shot over the crossbar when it would have easier
to score.

For the better part of the second stanza, China was chasing the game but made sure they kept a clean sheet and shared the spoils.

South Africa now has four points after two games, while China is sitting on just one after three matches.

Russia has six after two wins in two games, and Brazil registered a victory in the one match they have played so far.

Amajimbos next face Brazil on Tuesday, 11 October.

Zuma’s rape accuser Khwezi dies

JOHANNESBURG – Fezekile Ntsukela Kuzwayo who accused President Jacob Zuma of rape 10 years ago has died.

Kuzwayo – who was more commonly known as Khwezi – died yesterday.

WHO IS KHWEZI?

In December 2005 President Zuma was charged with rape and on the 8 May the following year the Johannesburg High Court acquitted him. The woman he was accused of raping became known to the public as “Khwezi” to protect her after multiple threats and facing a barrage of insults and harassment.

Khwezi grew up around Zuma who had spent 10 years on Robben Island with her father who was an African National Congress (ANC) member – her father died in a car accident in 1985. According to ANC veteran Ronnie Kasrils, Khwezi spent much time around him and Zuma seeing them as father figures.

In 1990 Khwezi was diagnosed with HIV and then became an aids activist. Zuma had infamously said that he had taken a shower after sex with Khwezi leading to satirical cartoons on the then potential president’s views on prevention of HIV/Aids.

During the trial, Khwezi revealed that zuma had offered to marry her to evade the case. Kasrils had said that Khwezi and her mother were victimised for speaking out and her mother’s house was also torched at the time.

After the trial, Khwezi and her mom moved to the Netherlands were they were granted asylum in 2007 – they both now live in KwaZulu-Natal.

In the 2016 local government elections, Khwezi’s name was again brought up as four female protestors staged a silent demonstration at the Independent Electoral Commission’s result center in front of President Zuma as he delivered his speech. The silent protest called #RememberKhwezi was to raise awareness on the plight of rape in South Africa and to commemorate Khwezi 10 years since the court acquitted Zuma.

The four demonstrators carried placards reading; #IAmOneInThree to mark the rape stats in South Africa, 10 years later to mark the anniversary of the trial, Kanga – which is the African material Khwezi was allegedly wearing when the incident happened. Speaking to Eyewitness News one of the demonstrators Naledi Chirwa said they staged the protest because they believe Khwezi was telling the truth and let down by the justice system.

Bafana give it away late on

Bafana Bafana surrendered their lead in stoppage time to earn a point in their opening Group D World Cup qualifier away to Burkina Faso.

Dean Furman’s 80th minute opener was canmcelled out by Banou Diawara’s stoppage time equaliser, after the Bafana defence was caught napping.

The hosts also missed two penalties, with Itumeleng Khune saving Jonathan Pitroipa’s first half spot-kick before Alain Traore blasted his effort from 12 yards out over the cross bar late on.

Burkina Faso showed early impetus in their backyard as Khune was kept the busier of the two goalkeepers in the first half.

The Stallions were rather fortuitous just 10 minutes into the match when the Moroccan referee pointed to the penalty spot, despite replays showing that the ball had struck Eric Mathoho outside the box.

Nonetheless, Khune pulled off a stunning diving save to his right to deny Pitroipa, as he not only blocked the penalty shot but managed to deny the Burkinabe any chance of a rebound.

Makola then produced a fine save from Koffi as his low set-pice from just outside the box bounced awkwardly for the Burkinabe shot stopper, who did well to parry the shot away for a corner.

Eight minutes before the break, Prejuce Nakoulma directed a header on target but Khune again thwarted the home side to ensure Bafana go into the break at 0-0.

In the 50th minute, Eleazar Rodgers positioned himself well to get on the end of Makola’s cross into the box, but the striker failed to direct his header on target from close range.

Momentum fell in way of the hosts as they piled pressure on the Bafana defence, but Khune was again forced into a spectacular diving save to deny Nakoulma just after the hour mark.

Midway through the half, Oupa Manyisa was brought on in place of Dolly and the substitute almost made his presence felt in the 76th minute but he blasted his effort wayward with only Koffi to beat from five yards out.

Furman finally broke the deadlock in the 80th minute when Makola’s corner was uncovincingly cleared and fell for the midfielder, who made no mistake with a right-footed shot through the crowd and into the far corner.

With two minute left of regualtion time, Manyisa needlessly dived into a challenge inside his own area as the referee pointed to the spot for a second time, however, Traore cracked under pressure and ballooned his penalty.

The hosts then poured numbers forward in search of a late equaliser, and they were eventually gifted a goal in the first minute of stoppage time when Diawara was played onside by Abbubakar Mobara and tapped home from point-blank ranger after the defence failed to clear a corner.

Burkina Faso XI: Koffi, Kabore, Kone, Dayo, Yago, Malo, Pitroipa, B. Traore, A.Traore, Nakoulma, Alain Traore.

Bafana XI: Khune, Mphahlele, Matlaba, Mathoho, Hlatshwayo (c), Kekana (Mahlangu 74′), Makola, Furman, Rodgers, Serero (Mobara 86′), Dolly (Manyisa 65′).

Subs: Mabokgwane, Mhlongo, Mobara, Manyisa, Mahlangu, Vilakazi, Gabuza, Langerman.

*Thobani Mncwango, Ayanda Patosi, Isaac Nhlapo and Diamond Thopola have not been included in this matchday squad.
