Treasury has confirmed that President Jacob Zuma has paid back the R7,8m he owed for upgrades to his private home in Nkandla, it has been reported.

A panel of six experts from two quantity surveyor firms helped the National Treasury determine how much Zuma had to pay for the upgrades. Treasury had recommended Zuma pay R7.81 million rand for non-security-related features, including R2.3m for the so-called swimming pool, R1m for the amphitheatre and R1.2m for the cattle kraal.

The Constitutional Court ruled in March that Zuma had violated the constitution by not abiding by the Public Protector’s recommendation that he should pay some of the money spent on the residence.

Mark Zinde murder case postponed

Mark appeared in the Brits Magistrate Court last month where his case was postponed.

The court was expected to hear feedback from the hospital on his mental state after 30 days of evaluation.

Zinde, who appeared in the Brits Regional Court in July, was admitted to Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital for evaluation as per an order by the magistrate.

Zinde’s lawyer has indicated that the application for psychiatric evaluation was brought forth by Hope Zinde back in 2013. Before her death she did sight some changes in Mark, he had withdrawal symptoms, he was allegedly aggressive and violent in his behavior and at times he would lock himself up in his room.

Mark Zinde is accused of killing his mother Hope Zinde, a well known media personality, at their home in Peacanwood Estate in the North West.

Hope Zinde’s body was found in a boot of a car and it is believed she was killed days before she was found.

Zinde is facing a charge of murder and another of possession of illegal drugs.

Pampierstad man jailed to life imprisonment for murder

THE police in the Northern Cape have welcomed the life sentence handed down to a Pampierstad man recently. Police spokesperson Capt Sergio Kock said Benjamin Olehile Mongale was found guilty and sentenced to a further 22 years imprisonment in the Vryburg High Court for robbery with aggravating circumstances, housebreaking and theft, possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

“Early on May 5, 2014 Mongale and two of his friends robbed a taxi driver, Boy Kheswa, of his vehicle. Mongale shot the driver twice in the back of the head and dumped the body next to the Pampierstad cemetery,” Kock said.

Kock said the men left the taxi next to the Hartswater main road and robbed a shepherd of 33 sheep.

“The shepherd’s hands were tied and he was blindfolded in the veld, while the accused slaughtered the sheep and apparently got a vehicle to ferry the meat.

“It was later found the firearm and ammunition was stolen by Mongale during a house break-in and theft in Pampierstad before murder,” he said.

Police said they recovered some meat, firearm, ammunition and arrested the three people about a month later at their homes in Pampierstad.

Kock said Frances Baard cluster commander Maj-Gen Jean Abrahams lauded investigating officer WO Sello Ngwato of the Pampierstad detective unit, for job well done.

Abrahams said police would continue to ensure that the community was safe and secure.
