SPORT promotes social cohesion and increases social capital, says the organizer of Mothusi Dikwelana Annual Youth Development Soccer and Netball Tournament. Mothusi Dikwelana encouraged the youth to participate in sport to fight socio-economic issues.
Dikwelana hosted his tournament recently in Dryharts village, near Taung.
“I decided to host this annual tournament in order to fight crime, teenage pregnancy, unemployment, HIV and AIDS epidemic, alcohol and drug abuse. We also promote healthy life-style through this. Sport improves community health, reduce cases of chronic disease and strengthen community cohesion.
“Our youth is faced with many challenges that affect them on daily basis. We have unemployment, poverty and inequality at the top of the list. The application of sport as an instrument for community and social development has proven to be an increasingly successful strategy,” he said.

Dikwelana further said eight teams participated in the soccer tournament that was won by Young Stars. The winners received a soccer kit, balls, trophy and medals.
“We also had netball teams participating against each other. The netball tournament was won by Dipala Netball Club. We had Top 4 Women football tournament too. Dipala Ladies F.C came out top and scooped the cup.
“I am doing this from my own pocket, but I have received a necessary support from community members like Stanley Mathonzi, David Jakwe, Tebogo Setshwaro and others. Particularly we focusing on promoting raw talents and scouts from PSL teams can come and have a look,” Dikwelana added.
He said even though Taung is still underdeveloped, that will change through sport. Dikwelana added that the mindsets of the youth in the area need to be changed positively.
“We need to promote healthy lifestyle choices, social inclusion and improving access to, and facilitation of, important community services. Successful areas has sport been used as a tool for engagement. So, we urge the offices that are responsible for the promotion of sport to support us.
“We will need an innovative and efficient tool for advancing community development, health education and peace building within community of Taung. We also took time to honour one of our finest products in Dryharts village, Edihang Windy Maruping,” he added.
Dikwelana added that Maruping was a former teacher at Motlhamareng Primary School. He said Maruping played a fundamental role in the area and also encouraged the youth to live positively.
